Appreciation thread: In praise of... The Batman!

the essence of Batman's appeal is that he is a superhero without superpowers. All he has is a cape, gadgets – and the keenest intellect of the entire stable of DC Comics. It's the last that earns him the title of the world's greatest detective. Created just months before the second world war, Batman's world is a ruined one. As a child, Bruce Wayne saw his parents killed by a mugger, and devoted his life to fighting crime. His Gotham has a thin crust of prosperity atop a subterranean world of malevolence. And for those who care more about politics than comics, heed this: The Dark Knight was accused by Rush Limbaugh of being part of a liberal plot. Holy bipartisan hell, Batman!
