Police burst into wrong apartment, shoot innocent woman hiding in closet

HEMPSTEAD, NY — An innocent woman hid in a closet when armed strangers unexpectedly broke into her apartment. While cowering in fear, she was discovered by one of the intruders — actually a police officer raiding the wrong address — who promptly shot her in the chest after opening the closet door.

A Flawed Warrant

The botched raid was part of a joint narcotics investigation by the Nassau County Police Force Bureau of Special Operations (BSO), the Town of Hempstead Police Department, and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.

When officers had reason to suspect that someone was in possession of arbitrarily banned substances, a search warrant was signed by a New York judge, authorizing police to break down the suspect’s door at any time they felt appropriate without warning. The no-knock warrant was “justified by the possibility that evidence would be destroyed,” according to official documents.

13. No More No-Knock Warrants.

Innocent people aren't safe in their own homes because of these thugs. Having someone possibly destroying evidence isn't a good enough excuse...anything justifying a raid should be something too big to be flushed down a toilet. What if that was a scared kid in the closet? And who cares this much about illegal drugs? No one anymore. It should all be legalized and no one should have a military style raid in their home regardless.

17. Right. Seriously. Who cares? Whose life is threatened by not securing the evidence? What

threat is so great that we have to kill people to save them from themselves. I can's stand this drug war; this thug war. It's so pointless. It's so Un-American. Why do we willingly accept a trade of lives taken at the hands of our protectors for evidence that can help enable conviction. I'm sick of the trade-off. I never voted for the trade-off. It isn't worth it.

19. Money and Corruption

They got away with it by exploiting people's fears. Bush Sr's CIA brought the most coke and heroin into our country than anyone.

4. Only 62 Members of Congress Voted Against Police Militarization Last Night

"Last night" refers to June 20, 2014

During the amendment voting for "defense" appropriations last night, Alan Grayson (FL-09) introduced an amendment to prohibit the use of funds to transfer aircraft (including unmanned aerial vehicles), armored vehicles, grenade launchers, silencers, toxicological agents, launch vehicles, guided missiles, ballistic missiles, rockets, torpedoes, bombs, mines, or nuclear weapons through the DOD Excess Personal Property Program established pursuant to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1997.

There was a great article in the New York Times last week on the militarization of local police. Giving military weapons to local police departments is at best a colossal waste of money. At its worst, it can ruin--or end--innocent lives.

The amendment failed 62 to 355. 19 Republicans and 43 Democrats voted for it. 210 Republicans and 145 Democrats voted against it.

6. Settle with Ms. Davis to the tune of $650,000.

Lawyer will get about 1/3. Hard way to end up with $400,000.

She's lucky that she didn't try to defend herself, or they wouldn't have stopped with one shot to the chest.
