Skittles, do you do ass-kickings by request?

If so, I've got one for you: everyone in the AP's Portland, Ore., bureau needs some of your special attention.

On May 19, as you probably remember, Oregon's gay-marriage ban was overturned. The AP sent a photojournalist to the Melody Ballroom in Portland, which was performing weddings just as fast as people could get there, to make happy snaps of the newly-married couples. He sent these in:

There's more, but you get the idea.

The photographer they sent was Portland-based Steve Dykes.

They MIGHT have been able to find a more inappropriately-named photog to do this job, but not easily.

1. I don't care what his name is

The photographs are beautiful, capturing the sheer joy of the participants who could finally marry the loves of their lives.

Eventually our gay brothers and sisters will be so normalized that the old pejoratives will have lost their stings completely and anyone who still uses them will be regarded as a moron and ostracised.

3. I remember hearing a report on NPR about the trial of Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

At the end the reporter said "This is Libby Lewis."

4. The pictures look great. Perhaps the person that needs Skittles attention is you.

Best wishes to all the happy couples.

6. We know "dykes" is a derogatory term for lesbians

Would we be so accepting if they'd sent someone whose name is close to (or is) an ethnic slur to work an event for members of the offended group? "Beaner" is an actual last name; if a newspaper sent Robert Beaner to cover a Cinco de Mayo Parade, they'd need a forklift to bring in all the hate mail.

Everyone who worked the weddings that day produced beautiful images. Most of them didn't have that name. I would have kept him on the "everything else happening in town that day" team, and had other photographers work the weddings.

9. I think you're trying too hard with this.

It's the guy's name. He didn't change his name specifically to that, so that the AP could sideline in an anti-LGBT slur.

It's a coincidence, a silly one.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

5. I sat next to a boy named Mike Cox.

Everytime the teacher said his last name, he would wink at me. Irritating. At least this guy is doing some good, not being an idiot.

Nice pictures!
