American Family Association: Don't Open Letters With Harvey Milk Stamp

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/american-family-association-dont-open-letters-harvey-milk-stamp

Incensed by the release of a postage stamp honoring Harvey Milk, the American Family Association is urging its members not only to avoid purchasing the stamp…but to refuse to accept or open any letter or package postmarked with one.

1. Refuse to accept the Harvey Milk stamp if offered by your local post office. Instead, ask for a stamp of the United States flag.

2. Refuse to accept mail at your home or business if it is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp. Simply write 'Return to Sender" on the envelope and tell your postman you won't accept it.

In his daily email alert yesterday, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins also attacked the Obama administration for issuing the stamp, linking the move to the imprisonment of a Sudanese mother who is facing the death penalty for her conversion to Christianity: “(T)he Obama administration -- which had more than enough time to throw a party in honor of homosexual activist Harvey Milk -- hasn't had a spare second to demand the freedom of two of America’s youngest citizens.”

What costs 32 cents to mail? Post cards are 34 cents, basic letter is 49 cents. Additional ounces aren't 32 cents either. Why make a stamp that can't be used? Unless the idea is to make a profit on the seigniorage - to make somebody use two of them (64 cents worth of postage) to mail a 49 cent letter. Of course stamp collectors also help out by buying stamps and then never using them.

I have news for the Mr. Perkins...the majority of Americans are tired of your anti-gay hateful rhetoric and empty threats. They see you for what you are a hateful little prick who probably has homo-erotic attractions. My experience, as a gay man, is when a man is so filled with hatred for gay men it is usually because they have gay attractions. My gaydar goes off when I encounter these men and it is fairly accurate.

Regardless of your hatred, we will see marriage equality in this country. ENDA will be passed to ensure LGBT persons are safe in their jobs and homes from homophobic discrimination. We will continue to see LGBT Americans increasingly accepted and welcomed into their communities, faith traditions, etc.

Mr. Perkins, even with those changes in our law, you will still be free to be a hateful, pathetic, unhappy, miserable human being. You will still be able to spew your vulgar, baseless and trite soundbites.

But LGBT Americans will have the same rights, nothing more and nothing less than you have enjoyed your entire life. You have never had to fight for anything sir. You are a coward.

As to your boycott it will only hurt your followers when they miss a bill, a letter from a long lost friend or relative, a letter containing a $1M check, etc.

They are not hurting Harvey Milk. He is already in heaven. They are not hurting the LGBT community. If you think so it is only in your little perverted mind.

One ginormous dollar. And to preserve its security, I'll wrap it inside a couple a pages from the newspaper. Of course, that would make the envelope really heavy. Hmmm. I guess that, in addition to the Milk stamp, I'd just have to use one of those Eid stamps that I saved. What the hell, if they're going to go apoplectic it ought to be worth it, eh?

48. He was assassinated while in office! Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Free
Wed May 28, 2014, 08:37 PM
May 2014

Member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from District 5,
Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Milk moved from New York City to settle in San Francisco in 1972 amid a migration of gay men to the Castro District. He took advantage of the growing political and economic power of the neighborhood to promote his interests, and ran unsuccessfully for political office three times. His theatrical campaigns earned him increasing popularity, and Milk won a seat as a city supervisor in 1977, part of the broader social changes the city was experiencing.

Milk served almost 11 months in office and was responsible for passing a stringent gay rights ordinance for the city. On November 27, 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White, another city supervisor who had recently resigned but wanted his job back. Milk's election was made possible by and was a key component of a shift in San Francisco politics. The assassinations and the ensuing events were the result of continuing ideological conflicts in the city.

Despite his short career in politics, Milk became an icon in San Francisco and a martyr in the gay community.[note 1] In 2002, Milk was called "the most famous and most significantly open LGBT official ever elected in the United States".[1] Anne Kronenberg, his final campaign manager, wrote of him: "What set Harvey apart from you or me was that he was a visionary. He imagined a righteous world inside his head and then he set about to create it for real, for all of us."[2] Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
