http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/22/us-ebay-password-idUSBREA4K0B420140522(Reuters) - EBay Inc came under pressure on Thursday over a massive hacking of customer data as three U.S. states began investigating the e-commerce company's security practices.
Connecticut, Florida and Illinois said they are jointly investigating the matter. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman requested eBay provide free credit monitoring for everyone affected.
Details about what happened are still unclear because eBay has provided few details about the attack. It is also unclear what legal authority states have over eBay's handling of the matter.
The states' quick move shows that authorities are serious about holding companies accountable for securing data following high-profile breaches at other companies, including retailers Target Corp, Neiman Marcus and Michaels and credit monitoring bureau Experian Plc.

I've changed my Ebay password. I recommend others do so also.

ebay should have immediately told all of its members to change their passwords.

after their security breach, but there were always alternatives. Any plausible alternatives to eBay out there to get stuff you just can't find in local brick-and-mortar shops?
I see Target is dying off, and it will show the CEO's that they had damned well better pay attention to hiring competent domestic IT staff to make sure customer information is protected, but how do we teach eBay a lesson? They've become a monopoly by default.

(11,905 posts)4. So, would that credit monitoring run concurrently
With my 3 yrs of credit monitoring from work (pnpi breach), which is piggy
backed to the year I have left from the state and the year that Target offered?
