Unarmed Black Veteran Kenneth Chamberlain Shot Dead by NY Police, Yet No Officers Charged
As the Trayvon Martin case draws national attention, we look at another fatal shooting of an unarmed African-American male that has received far less scrutiny. Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr., a 68 year-old African-American Marine veteran, was fatally shot in November by White Plains, NY, police who responded to a false alarm from his medical alert pendant. The officers hurled racial slurs at Chamberlain, broke down his door, tasered him, and then shot him dead. Were joined by Chamberlains son, Kenneth Chamberlain Jr., and two of his attorneys. One of the attorneys, Mayo Bartlett, questions the police response to the shooting, comparing it to the official story that emerged after George Zimmerman shot the unarmed African-American teenager Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida last month. Its very similar to Mr. Zimmerman suggesting that he had a bloody nose, and now you look at the video and that doesnt appear to be the case, says Bartlett. That really makes you question what were being told sometimes by government with respect to these types of matters. Kenneth Chamberlain Jr. struggles through tears to recount his fathers final moments, including the way police officers mocked his fathers past as a Marine. For them to look at my father that way, (with) no regard for his life, every morning I think about it, he says. [Transcript to come. Check back soon.]

(3,576 posts)The cops could not care less about constitutional rights, their attitude is get an attorney and let the courts figure it out. Usually the defendant will get a public defender who is an "officer of the court", all they want is to clear their case load as easily and quickly as possible so they almost always recommend taking the prosecutors deal. I think every defendant in this country should demand a jury trial, this would put a stop to this constitutional sham very quickly.

That was also the case in the felony booking of the 60-year-old woman with two flat tires ("resisting arrest" as well.
And in the case of the woman arrested for not leaving the hospital because she had leg pains that wouldn't go away, a perceived challenge to the authority of the hospital personnel was also, I think, the motivation.
And quite clearly zimmerman had issues about power.

(8,514 posts)Janet DiFiore is the district attorney of Westchester County, where this took place. CALL: 914-995-3317. This is the community affairs office. You can leave a message at this number, even late at night.
When the young man from Dayton was shot 22 times by a private security firm, while he was trying to leave an apartment complex, I called the Montgomery County Prosecutors office, the office of community affairs, and left a message that I was going to tell all of my friends and family about what they had done to that young man, and that the police had failed to investigate and pursue these cowboy security guards.
I let them know that I was from Houston, Texas, not Dayton, Ohio and the prosecutor's office called me back the very next day, on a conference call! They were EXTREMELY concerned that this case was going to balloon into another Trayvon Martin case. They SHOULD be concerned; and concerned enough to do their jobs. What makes the difference here is the fact that this happened in Dayton, Ohio and I was calling from Houston, Texas. They do not want a local case to turn into a national fiasco; they don't like that spotlight. CALL THEM. Tell them that you are concerned about what they did to Mr. Chamberlain, and where you are calling from. Light a fire under their asses. Let them know that we are watching.
I'm going to continue to contact the Montgomery County prosecutor's office and let them know that THAT case can blow up to national proportions in their face if they don't make it a priority, too.
Whatever you do might seem insignificant, but it's very important that you do it. Each one of us, posting on social media, calling the prosecutor's office, making our voices heard, brought the Trayvon Martin case into the national spotlight. We have to continue to do this every time one of our citizens is made a victim by the powers that be. Please call the community affairs division, and leave a message, if nothing else: 914-995-3317.

(62,325 posts)this week. His son is such an incredible person. A tribute to his father, and, there just are no words ...
I will tweet the story and email it to everyone I know. I think someone posted some phone numbers, I will call them also.
It is an absolute disgrace that not one of their elected officials has the guts to call the family. A Marine, 'support the troops'. Was there ever a more empty phrase than that.
They are liars and criminals. To claim he had an ax and a knife. Thank god for the video and that they did not know about it. They put the story in the press. You would think by now the press would investigate these stories and stop taking them directly from the police.
Amy did a wonderful job of presenting this case, giving them time to tell their story and allowing his son the space to cry without pressuring him. The end of the video was so tastefully done, with so much respect which apparently he would never get had the story not been made public.
I will tweet the story to Al Sharpton and a few other TV hosts also.
Thank you for posting this. It is a truly heart-breaking story. I give his son credit for his restraint and his demeanor. He is such a far better man than all of them, the cops, the elected officials, the media put together. I hope the media now corrects that story you linked to.
Maybe some calls to them asking that they publish the facts now would be a good idea also.
The cops' names have not been released after nearly six months. Just like Scott Olsen. And Kayvan Sabhegi. The US police departments need to be thoroughly cleaned out. They are an increasing threat to the public.

(944 posts)So heartbreaking to watch. Mr. Chamberlain's son must be commended for bringing the story of his dad's death to Democracy Now.
How is it even possible for police answering a call from a medical alert company to end up killing a man? Thankfully the recording of all of it by the medical alert company exists -- much to the eternal shame of the police.
When police who answer this type of emergency call feel empowered to refer to a black man as a n*gger, and to tase (a heart patient!) then kill him, we have so far to go before racism has been stamped out. So very far.
Please watch the video and sign Kenneth Chamberlain Jr.'s petition for further investigation/prosecution of the murder of his father by these thug police.

newspeak
(4,847 posts)if the average citizen lied and murdered someone, in most cases they'd be arrested. But, it seems that's not the case with the police when they lie and kill. How much faith does one have in those who are supposed to protect and serve the public when some will lie in a heartbeat to protect their arses for doing something so heinous?
I think our media aids whipping the fear and contempt for the "other" people. And, I think they've been doing it for a long time. Back in the eighties, in my psychology class, we watched a film of people in a bus and a white woman's purse is stolen. We were supposed to determine who stole the purse. It was right there on the film who stole the purse, but the majority in the class put down that the black guy did it. Instead it was a white guy who stole it. It's like how african americans were portrayed by the media during katrina. I think some of these networks aid the divide and distrust.

I think that there is no justice available for minorities in this country, from a cop with a gun on his hip, to a DA with preconceived notions of "protect police no matter what", to judges, nationwide, who gavel innocents into prison, daily, simply because of the color of their skin.
So many emotions from reading that transcript.
