to use the oldest cliche anyone ever heard. She is a southern writer, who has been writing about the South for decades, and she now writes "...and he's not just whistling Dixie!" as if it's clever. How is it possible to write something so trite?

Everything she writes about race is just as much of a meaningless cliche. "Post-racial America." ok, let the fascinating discussion begin.

Certainly, calling Thomas and Scott "Uncles Toms" was shameful and racist, and Holmes deserves to be excoriated over it.

But I think she probably underestimates the difference in amount of racism per capita between Alabama and more liberal parts of the USA.

this guy maybe someone who is slightly incendiary, but saying race is overplayed, is just really convenient when you don't suffer from institutionalized racism

DU is the only forum that I know that allows it. I didn't even know it was possible until just now.
