If you had to pick a song that would best sum up the 21st century thusfar

what would you choose? There are certain songs that capture an era. "Mrs. Robinson" captures the 60's for my Dad. "Miss American Pie" is another one. What would you say for this era?

I need some help with this. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I recalled recently working on a movie called "Shadow Hours" I was music editor on it and also put together the advert campaign.

The music was wonderful and emotional. It sounded like crap.

Not like when I was in the music industry when ... I have to stop now. It recalls to many good memories and how I had to erase my cousin's guitar solo because it was to f**kin big for the record.

Lyrics excerpts:

Everybody wants to live in a lie
But why should we delude ourselves
It's not as if we can't see something's wrong
Where's the duty to what's right
Intentions end with empty words
And chaos replaces order

Those who shout loudest
Impose their will
Upholding laws that serve a few
Declaring peace while the sirens sing
In the name of progress
The name of madness
Drum beats faster
Crowd shouts louder
And chaos replaces order

I want justice for the voice that can't be heard
Vindication for every suffering and hurt
Let retribution hold dominion over earth
Because Judgment Day's not coming
Judgment Day's not coming
Soon enough

Lyrics: Broken Promised Land

It's a state of affairs a wave of disbelief
Innocent people everywhere
Being pushed out into the street
With their guards up and their spirits down
Sea to shining sea, town to burning town
That's the way it is here in broken promised land

What's the difference between a halo and a crown
What's the difference between a jester and a clown
When you gotta choose one here
In broken promised land

There's a boy on the corner
Selling rock to get you high
He'd probably sell his soul
But nobody wants to buy
Souls don't bring much these days
Here in broken promised land

It's a fine line we pray we never have to cross
Into the other side into the land of the lost
There's a whole lotta people that got a little off track
Life was just an adventure now they can't find their way back

Can you tell me what is left to hold onto
If you take away my pride
Ain't no telling what I might do
If you lock me away while the guilty walk free
You might as well take my life
Make a real free man of me
'Cause this sure ain't freedom
Sure don't taste like freedom
Here in broken promised land

6. The Who. Won't get fooled again:
Wed Mar 28, 2012, 01:27 AM
Mar 2012

Lyrics:

We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgment of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again

Change it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fall that's all
But the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie

Do ya?

There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

11. Rupert Hine - A Golden Age

Most people here will have never heard of him, but I'd say his early 80s cut was rather prophetic, or at least applicable to most any time since:

I can no longer count the dreams
Inspired by reconstructions of predicted scenes
The glass and metal fragments racing
Through the pointless heat
I can't go on believing this
Have I lived just to witness the last decade
Or a golden age
Still I love the way this new wind whistles through my house
And papers fly
While Orwell's world is still in doubt
And china shivers on a tray
I am untimely ripped from all forgotten bliss
But not afraid
I can't go on
I can't go on believing this
Have I lived just to witness the last decade
Or a golden age
Could the waiting ever be worse than the shock
Suppose the silver key survived
To turn inside the rusty lock
And you and I be found alive
Crouching in our ignorance
By children nearly twice our size
I can't go on believing this
Have I lived just to witness the last decade
Or a golden age
Till they eat their words some wild voice churns deep in my blood
The prophets sigh
We always said you'd never learn
Then cynics long to break the brave
I wish their mouths all stitched so their persistant hiss
Is not obeyed
I can't go on
I can't go on believing this
Have I lived just to witness the last decade
Or a golden age
I do believe there are people needing freedom with good reason
Who will find another way
There's no disgrace in understanding
Why our planet is in panic
Then, while you worry think of everything you miss

"... but who are the ones that we call our friends, these governments killing their own? ...

...or the people who finally can't take any more, and they pick up a gun, or a brick, or a stone..."

Oh no cannonballs did fly
No rifles cut us down
No bombs fell from the sky
No blood soaked the ground
No powder flash blinded the eye
No deafening thunder sounded
But just as sure as the hand of god
They brought death to my hometown
They brought death to my hometown, boys

No shells ripped the evening sky
No cities burning down
No armies stormed the shores for which we'd die
No dictators were crowned
High off on a quiet night
I never heard a sound
The marauders raided in the dark and brought death to my hometown, boys
Death to my hometown

They destroyed our families' factories and they took our homes
They left our bodies on the plains
The vultures picked our bones

So listen up, my Sonny boy
Be ready for when they come
For they'll be returning sure as the rising sun

Now get yourself a song to sing and sing it 'til you're done
Yeah, sing it hard and sing it well
Send the robber barons straight to hell
The greedy thieves who came around
And ate the flesh of everything they've found
Whose crimes have gone unpunished now
Walk the streets as free men now

And they brought death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown

Sweet disposition
Never too soon
Ah, reckless abandon
Like no one's watching you

A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry
Our rights, our wrongs
A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh
A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh

Stay there, cause I'll be coming over
While our blood's still young
So young, it runs
Won't stop till it's over
Wont stop to surrender

Songs of desperation
I played them for you

A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry
Our rights, our wrongs
A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh
A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh

Stay there, cause I'll be coming over
While our blood's still young
So young, it runs
Won't stop till it's over
Wont stop to surrender

A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry
Our rights, our wrongs
A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry
Our rights, our wrongs
A moment, a love a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry
Our rights, our wrongs

Won't stop till it's over
Won't stop till it's over
Won't stop to surrender

Cat's foot iron claw
Neuro-surgeons scream for more
At paranoia's poison door.
Twenty first century schizoid man.

Blood rack barbed wire
Polititians' funeral pyre
Innocents raped with napalm fire
Twenty first century schizoid man.

Death seed blind man's greed
Poets' starving children bleed
Nothing he's got he really needs
Twenty first century schizoid man.

Seems to fit pretty good - here are the lyrics (bolding added):
-------------------

The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we're running out of time
Every day it seems much harder tellin' right from wrong
You got to read between the lines

Don't get discouraged, don't be afraid, we can
Make it through another day
Make it worth the price we pay

The Good Book says it's better to give than to receive
I do my best to do my part
Nothin' in my pockets I got nothin' up my sleeve
I keep my magic in my heart

Keep up your spirit, keep up your faith, baby
I am counting on you
You know what you've got to do

Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
It's your only way

All your life you've been waiting for your chance
Where you'll fit into the plan
But you're the master of your own destiny
So give and take the best that you can

You think that a little more money can buy your soul some rest
You better think something else instead
You're so afraid of being honest with yourself
You'd better take a look inside your head

Nothing is easy, nothing good is free
But I can tell you where to start
Take a look inside your heart
There's an answer in your heart

Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay

Every moment of your lifetime
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay

Yeah
