Bill Maher tore into the Supreme Court's decision invalidating aggregate campaign contribution limits on an individual during an election cycle.
"They say the Constitution was created by geniuses so idiots could run it," the comedian and liberal political commentator said Friday on his HBO show "Real Time With Bill Maher." "I need to amend that. I think the idiots have found a way to break it. I do. I think the idiots have finally won over the geniuses."
He took particular aim at Chief Justice John Roberts for decreeing in the 5-4 controlling opinion that giving large sums of money to politicians doesn't give rise to quid pro quo corruption.
"Either he is a liar or he is too naïve to hold any important job, including -- and especially this one," he said. "This is like a legal ruling written by the Little Mermaid. Are you crazy?"

I wonder how much moolah the big corporations trickled down into this unspeakable travesty of a " decision " ?

(14,449 posts)If not for him, we would not have ACA at all. He was vilified by the conservatives for that vote. Had Bush gotten another Supreme Court Justice besides Roberts, we might be out of luck with ACA.

(9,760 posts)The relentless and hostile anti-intellectualism and purposeful degradation of public education is allowing RWers to put forth the most glaringly nonsensical talking points and have half of the American public go, "Yeah. That makes sense." Ignorance is bliss.

(9,760 posts)Loads of people really do accept that pretzel logic as legit.
But yeah, the RW ringleaders who construct this BS must think themselves quite clever. And, I guess they're right. Because it works quite well.

(12,151 posts)The idea that there's no "quid pro quo" when A hands money to B in order to hand it to C, with B fully aware of where the money is coming from is not a good faith argument.
Nobody thinks that.

(9,314 posts)Roberts is sitting in the Chief Justice's seat as payback for services he rendered to George W. Bush* and the 2000 election controversy. During that time frame, he left DC and went to Florida to volunteer his services to Jeb Bush in the recall battle.
Roberts is supposed to be a Constitutional specialist. But many of the public threats made by the Republicans during that time were actually unconstitutional maneuvers. And I do believe a Constitutional expert would have known that, but most lawyers would assume the public would believe whatever it was told. An excellent example of that was the threat issued if Gore prevailed as a result of the recall vote, the legislature would still send a Republican state to the Electoral College. Many people believed it would have followed through with that threat. However, the Florida Constitution specifically provided for the slate to be determined by the plurality of the popular vote. Had the legislature actually done that, the Electoral College could have thrown the slate out, leaving Florida with no vote, for violating its own election law.
As you know, "To the victor belongs the spoils" and the spoils we endure as a result of the Bush* taking of the Office of the United States President do include Roberts sitting in that Supreme Court chair. But "spoils" does not begin to suffice to describe his collective work to date....

(2,545 posts)I have been more than a bit suspicious about the nature of certain elements in our supposed elder court. They seem less supreme and more monarchical, especially Scalia. He seems believe that he actually is supremely superior. John Roberts has demonstrated a proclivity for monied interests far beyond what a democratically oriented justice constitutionally aligned should be. And who can possibly explain someone like Clarence Thomas.

(904 posts)...are two traits that made a political appointee eminently qualified in the eyes of Bushiebaby.
This is the same man who brought you Porter Goss for the CIA, the Horse guy for FIMA, Myers for Attorney General, and countless others unqualified turds. Should we be surprised?
This kind of incompetency/corruption is what we should expect from a political party who, by their charter, does not believe in government. How much more proof does one need?
