Miami Gardens teenager Trayvon Martin was suspended from school in October in an incident in which he was found in possession of womens jewelry and a screwdriver that a schools security staffer described as a burglary tool, The Miami Herald has learned.
Trayvon, who claimed that an unnamed friend had given him the jewelry, was not disciplined because of the discovery, but was instead suspended for graffiti, according to a Miami-Dade Schools Police report obtained by The Miami Herald.
A lawyer for the dead teens family acknowledged Trayvon had been suspended for graffiti, but said the family knew nothing about the jewelry and the screwdriver, calling the information in the report an attempt to demonize the youth.
According to the report, on Oct. 21 staffers monitoring a security camera at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School spotted Trayvon and two other students writing W.T.F., an acronym for What the f---, on a hallway locker, according to schools police. The security employee, who knew Trayvon, confronted the teen and looked through
Trayvons backpack contained 12 pieces of jewelry, in addition to a watch and a large flathead screwdriver, according to the report, which described the screwdriver as a burglary tool.
Trayvon was asked if the jewelry, which was mostly womens rings and earrings, belonged to his family or a girlfriend.
Martin replied its not mine. A friend gave it to me, according to the report. Trayvon declined to name the friend.

(1,438 posts)Hunting (not the same thing as murder, after all). Target shooting.
They're also quite good as a tool for killing people; I wouldn't deny it for a moment.
I also have a tool that's designed to kill people that's quite good at cutting food!

Actually, I have a couple dozen different bayonets for various rifles, so I'm ready to cut me some food!

(8,582 posts)Do cops shoot people in the back as they are running with a TV? No, cops won't kill you over a TV. Unless you drop the TV, and turn around with a gun in your hand. They'd kill you dead. Zimmerman was pissed from his beating and then shot the kid.

(57,936 posts)And whether Trayvon had a screwdriver and women's jewelry in his bag is irrelevant.
We know that Trayvon on the night of the murder was where he was supposed to be. If you listen to Zimmerman's 911 call and look at a map of the murder and the house to which Trayvon was headed, you know that Trayvon was there legitimately and that he was half-way between Zimmerman's location at the time of the call (as Zimmerman described it) and the house toward which he was, according to Zimmerman, running.
As for the fact that Zimmerman described Trayvon as looking around at the houses, Trayvon may have been trying to find his direction, his bearings. If you every go into a development like the one you see on the map -- with townhouses adjacent teach other, you will know that they all look alike. You have to look at the house numbers to know where you are.

(32,653 posts)It's that simple. No matter how much they try to spin this and blame the victim. A boy was walking home and in the process, he was killed for no reason.

(2,198 posts)What does any of that have to do with him being shot and killed in cold blood by a stalking wannabe cop? Nothing. It's the same game they cops and media play when a woman is raped. Do eveything you can to blame it on the victim. You can film a defenseless black man being beaten to within an inch of his life while laying on the ground...either being beaten by police of just plain skinheads and it is always the black victim's fault for being ' threatening.' Sure their are some blacks that are thugs...and there are some thugs who are white, Hispanic, Korean, Chinese, Russian...etc. But only the blacks seem to be reported in the media as thugs and if beaten up or killed, somehow it is usually their fault. Women can drown their own children, men can murder their own wives and just simply say a black mad did it and that will justify stopping any black man in the vicinity and even justify shooting him. No wonder the Afghanis don't want Bales tried here and say that our justice system is unfair and unjust. I believe our media is just above our Congress in public trust.

It seems like all of these "new" details seem to paint him as this bad person and Zimmerman as a sympathetic figure. And Martin has no chance to defend himself.

(60,567 posts)Please take a step back and look at the big picture, FLA. The media are going to have to go through a lot of gyrations to keep their audiences interested in this case over the next (minimum) two weeks before any real information comes out of the grand jury.
The grand jury won't even convene until April 10. That means that pretty much anything that gets published is done so for the purpose of getting attention.

At some point, it may be best for the family to make a statement as to what the suspension was about....they could probably authorize the school to release its paperwork.
If they don't, well, the story just keeps growing.
