...and it shows what we are up against.
She posted saying that Hobby Lobby was being forced by the evil Obamacare to pay for abortions.
I posted: "You said: "Obama care mandates they pay for the actual abortion pill, as well as the surgical procedure of abortion itself."
No....
"There is no requirement in ACA that health care plans cover abortion, nor is there a prohibition preventing plans from covering abortion. Rather, ACA gives health care plans participating in state exchanges the ability to determine whether or not to cover abortion services." (The Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) cannot include any coverage of abortion as part of the essential benefits package required to be covered by health care plans. Section 1303(b)(1)(A)(i).)
"The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act maintains the status quo on abortion policy and does not shift federal abortion policy in either a pro-life or pro-choice direction. The following provisions will ensure that the bill does nothing to restrict or expand existing abortion law, while ensuring that federal funds cannot be used for abortion coverage or care." http://www.dpc.senate.gov/healthreformbill/healthbill18.pdf
"Right-wing media have responded to a Supreme Court justice's decision to temporarily block the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) birth control mandate by falsely claiming that abortifacients are included in the coverage required by the health care law." http://mediamatters.org/.../right-wing-media.../197422
"Those buying plans on the exchange would send in a separate payment to cover abortion services, and coverage for abortions (other than in cases or rape or incest or danger to the mothers life) would be paid for from a segregated pool of money that contains no federal funds.
Furthermore, the Senate bill now law allows states to prohibit policies sold on their exchanges from covering abortions, with the same exceptions. And it requires that at least one plan in state exchanges not include abortion coverage beyond federal limitations." http://www.factcheck.org/2010/04/the-abortion-issue/
She posted: "Why do you hate religion so much ? Why are you so hypocritical yourself? So angry you arnt(sic) included in other religious based groups as an atheist, while bashing them and making such hateful comments and not being tolerant of them? I am truly sorry if a religious person hurt you in the past...or whatever happened to you. But for someone who touts about wanting rights for everyone but bashes the religious.... It's very hypocritical."
WTF.... I'm certainly not a religion booster, but how did the debunking of what she said constitute bashing religion.
I'm telling you....the RW is getting weirder and weirder.

You are better off trying to persuade the truly uncommitted than an extremist, since at least there, you have a chance. Something to remember on this site as well.

(1,397 posts)It works this way:
1. Rightwinger tells a lie.
2. You rebut the lie.
3. RW repeats the original lie plus another lie.
4. You rebut both lies.
5. RW introduces a whole new topic by introducing another lie and repeating the first two lies.
See the pattern?
Read all about it:

(8,127 posts)it goes more like this
1- Right winger lies
2- I rebut
3- they call me nasty names
4- I point out that's unnecessary and to stick to facts
5- my posts get deleted and they post a self righteous rant about others 'being rude on their facebook to them'
6 - I point out that if you don't want people to give their opinion, you shouldn't post your opinion either.. or atleast disable the ability to reply if you don't care to have folks respond or question you..
7- I get defriended.

(1,918 posts)Whenever I get into a discussion with someone who goes ad hominem, or changes the goal posts or, especially, changes the subject, I just walk away. I will usually make one last remark that they failed to prove their point and leave them hanging. I'm sorry she unfriended you though. She spoke from emotion, not facts and I find people like that are hard to trust.
I hope it wasn't a deep loss on your end though.

Peace all, let us un-politicize some of the really vital topics, so we can have issue discussions, not politically biased and tinged attack, counter attack stagnation.

(18,219 posts)I also abandoned FB soon after getting on. You cannot avoid the political and religious topics there, since almost everyone is posting something political or religious. I found that if I stayed on there, I would have hated some people who I liked, but on a more superficial level than deep discussion.....I had no idea how batshit they were. And I didn't want to know.
I can agree that vital topics needing discussion instead of bias and anger......I say let them go first because we have no belief that they will be rational.
Todays_Illusion
(1,209 posts)opinions about my family and friends. Yes, it takes a few co-conspirators and some practice at pleasant and subtle conversation turning, as completely neutral as, "I agree that is an important topic, move away from a political view with a completely neutral statement, linked but leading.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)I wear my opinions on my sleeve, and I have a low threshold for the inciting remarks that I see. I really do have to just avoid people who stir the pot......but it would be great to be able to be subtle. Although it seems manipulative in a benevolent sort of way.

(18,219 posts)I love when they pull the religion argument. You really must understand that abortion and religion really really really are related. So if you debunk her abortion lie, you have attacked religion. Don't you get it????

A Biblical abortion uses a sword.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)Actually that is the Biblical procedure only if a man performs the abortion. The women were smarter....they had ways.
mnhtnbb
(31,374 posts)God actually mandates abortion when the fetus is a product of adultery (Numbers 5). A jealous and suspicious husband should bring his wife to the local priest, who forces the woman to drink a poisonous "water of bitterness" to bring on God's "curse". If she experiences "bitter pain," if her "belly swells" and her "thigh rots," she fails the test and becomes an outcast. Virtually all Biblical scholars agree that this voodoo ritual and its cloaked euphemisms refer to an induced (not to mention unsafe) abortion. The word "thigh" in the Old Testament usually means genitals, but in this case, it refers to the uterus and its contents. One alternate Bible translation reads, "She will have barrenness and a miscarrying womb." (New International Version)
And a very interesting discussion making the argument that the Bible is pro-choice. Lots of ammunition here
if you are motivated to take on the anti-choice crowd. But we all know you can't confuse them with the facts.

(1,812 posts)We lost friends when Bush was elected and again over the Iraq war.
It was hard, but still cannot believe how they could have supported either.
It is hypocritical of Hobby Lobby to buy their products from China if they are so christian and have such beliefs. Why were they supporting China's mandatory abortion policy before it was changed by buying products from them?
Barry Goldwater said this back in the early 80's
"There is no arguing with these people.
On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both."

(9,085 posts)I have an idea for a play about a young man in eastern Texas disowned by his Evangelical parents for being openly gay in 2001. By 2014 he has been away from town and returns as a religious scholar to speak with his hometown community for a book. He wants to interview his parents about their views. The hook in the play is that he had a sex change and is unrecognizable to those in the town - including his parents - as a woman. It will have a tragic ending as She reveals herself as their "son" and they cannot handle the situation. (there is no sex in the play. It is about who you are and your respect for others).

(8,020 posts)... and I'm certainly not hurt.
I refuse to keep my FB posts light..about puppies and shit... The things that really count in my life are the topics/questions of the day. Questions of war/peace or hungry kids mean more to me than what I'm cooking for dinner.
I never tell people they are full of shit or the like, I simply rebut what they have to say.... with citations.
My hope is not to convince them, but rather to make sure others who read that crap will know that there is a fact-based-reality side to things.
Full disclosure: I was a teacher for 30 years, and ignorance...especially willful ignorance... has been my enemy for at least that long. And lies...? Well, lies are impossible for me to ignore. It makes life a little frustrating, but at least my brain isn't withering away.

and buys their shit from China which is where many female workers end up getting forced abortions due to the Chinese limit on how many children a family can have she's already paying for abortions.
If you could somehow tell her that, be sure to wear a poncho, because her exploding head is going to be nasty.

(53,661 posts)I remember Pat Robertson's idiotic statement when confronted with the forced abortion issue in China at the time so many GOPers were promoting moving business there. He said in essence, it's okay. 'It's was their country, so they have a right to do it, blah, blah.'
Your suggestion would bring this so called matter of individual conscience right to their door. But they'd find an excuse. RW pundis have totally inoculated their cult followers against facts or reasons or calls to logic. Just like cults do.
