(94,312 posts)Who is Claire Conner?
Her book, Wrapped in the Flag (named one of the Best of 2013 in Nonfiction by Kirkus Reviews) goes deep into the heart of the JBS, exposes the extreme ideas of that powerful political fringe group, and shows how they continue to impact America today.

Claire speaks widely on the JBS and the dangers of the radical right. Her riveting presentations expose the plans of rich anti-government libertarians, religious zealots, and old John Birchers to take America back . . . back 100 years.

(7,051 posts)Occupy is, indeed, dead.

(22,666 posts)Even if Occupy is dead, does that mean we give up and let them (the radicals) win?

(7,051 posts)She specifically directs her anger at the right wing, forgetting that this applies to all:
"But if you are sporting a big bank account and own a corporation, well all doors are open. Step right in and buy yourself a congressman or two, a senator and a Supreme Court."
The fact that the "Occupy" name (which by the way, seems to be the latest quick and easy way to establish some kind of "progressive" credibility) appears close by, is irony at it's finest..

(22,666 posts)It's clear to me why she does that and I therefore don't hold it against her or consider her comments irrelevant because of it.

(4,775 posts)Neither Obama nor his logo have any rightful place next to the Occupy moniker, it seems contradictory and wrong. I'd add the Democratic Party to that too, sadly.
However, as much as I recoil at the juxtaposition mentioned above, I absolutely love that someone is actually putting energy into igniting a progressive resurgence in the Democratic Party.
We have the progressive caucus, which is ok but they're owned like the rest of them and not nearly feisty enough to hold the party hostage when they don't get their way (and that's what it apparently takes for anyone to pay any attention to the left).
The difference is the Tea Party was mostly astro-turf with huge organizational structure coming from corporate Koch revenue streams. And we operate in an uneven playing field dominated by the corporate-owned media who will show 10 tea partiers while ignoring 100,000 liberals in the street protesting.
Here's another organization few people have probably heard of (though I first read about it on DU):

It looks to be mostly focused on campaign finance reform, which IMO is the exact right place to focus.
I support any effort for the left to get a seat at the table, so good luck to Occupy Democrats. And major kudos to her for the Birch Society and Koch research.
