(13,566 posts)up in Idaho, there was like a four year lag in the Hippie movement. Guys I know that will say thery were Hippies, I see a 1969 picture of them and they look like their mom dressed them! LOL Kids here in school finally got to have long hair about 1972.
One club in town where the Yardbirds played with Jimmy Page and I've seen the poster, a retro story on that club featured a bunch of young guys in buttoned shirts with collars and black plastic rimmed glasses. All they needed was pocket protectors to be revenge of the nerds. Not a hippie in sight! The freakin' Yard Birds had to think they were playing an Eagles Lodge for kids!
Here you went to Woodstock at the Autoview about two years later and that was a big event. The class of '74 tried to have the Hendrix version of The Star Spangled Banner at their graduation but that idea got squashed. At least they tried though.
steve2470
(37,457 posts)A very toned down version, of course.
I can't remember anything after about 1965. Not sure that is from the all the pot back then...or maybe the senility of today.

(396 posts)We were young, we understood the problems, we discussed the problems seriously, we had solutions. Yes, solar & wind power were among them.
We knew how fragile the ecosystem is.
Had we been listened to, the world would be a different place today.
Hint - it wouldn't be capitalist.

(51,076 posts)I came home after 15 months in country Vietnam and proceeded to become a dirty fucking hippie. It was they who got my ass our of there not the politicians and damn sure wasn't nixon who in some circles got the credit. It was the Hippies who stopped that war. They were right then and we are still right today. None of the things we supported has been proven to not have been right.
brewens
(13,566 posts)Vietnam? I've heard there is not a shred of evidence of that happening and I actually find it hard to believe anyone would do that.
steve2470
(37,457 posts)brewens
(13,566 posts)case or anything like that? Video evidence would be unlikely of course back then. You'd sure think that would have gotten someone arrested. I could see some soldier beating the crap out of someone spitting on or at him and being prosecuted too. Bystanders at a protest would probably have done something about it as well.

(13,566 posts)was the basis for some feeling they were called "baby killers". I'd take that as people on the right trying to direct that messge the way they would want. That wasn't directed at your average guy that served over there.
MADem
(135,425 posts)Don't ever recall hearing "babies" in that chant.
The "kids" they were referring to were the kids who were sent off at eighteen young years old to fight and die.
That resulted in the changes in the drinking and voting ages. Old enough to fight? Old enough to vote--and for several years anyway, in many states until they raised it nationally in 1984, old enough to drink.

(45,274 posts)It's was a lie. I was there - it did not happen, but the media was doing all it could to discredit the DFH, because we were advocating crazy ideas like social responsibility, environmental awareness, limited capitalism, etc. There has not been a single bit of proof that this ever happened. In truth, the exact opposite happened. We knew these guys coming back were nothing more than pawns in a game that had been shattered by the truth - they were fighting and dying for nothing. But hey were our brothers, cousins, friends and they were ruined people that needed help. They had been lied to, big time. And a lot took refuge in the counter culture movement to try to find some sense of reality. They came back drugged, bitter, angry, confusing, blindly hating, and distrustful of about everything. It was the "straights"that told them to suck it up, they should be proud for serving their country, and to shut up and put it behind them. It was the counter culture people - the hippies - that allowed them space to sort themselves out. My little commune had one soldier come through, he was wandering around in town with no place to sleep, and the pain in his eyes was too much to look at. He had seen way too much horror for a person so young. We just fed him and housed him, and gave him clothing when he asked for it. He didn't talk much, and eventually he did, and one of the first things he said was he was told before he got out of the army, that the hippies would hate him and spit on him. He was very suspicious of us, but we were the only ones who would take him in in a cold northeast winter, so he had little choice. Once he found out that he had been lied to, and it was OK to sit in a corner and cry it out, and people would listen to him talk without judging him, he eventually came to trust us. he spilled his guts and the stories he told were horrible, but he needed to say it to get it out of his system. One morning, he got up, and he was a different person - like he had just awakened from a nightmare to discover the world around him was alright, after all. My girlfriend awoke me crying, and told me she went into the kitchen and he was there cooking, and she heard him laugh for the first time since he had moved in, and it moved her to tears.. He eventually found himself a girlfriend, they moved to Vermont to start a farm, and he left us with a smile and hope. That is the truth, no matter what the media was trying to say.

(15,435 posts)this really happened, BUT I think it was a rumor that got started and has grown with time! I grew up as an Army brat and was around many military men, but never heard it spoken to me. I had many friends who got drafted, some never came home, but none ever said it happened to them. AND, I've seen documentaries that have said it's untrue and read books that debunk this too.
Just saying what I saw and heard personally.

Y'know, stop corrosive pollution and greenhouse gases, remove the dangers of present and future radiation poisoning, stop the GMOing and antibioticization of our food, etc. Not to mention US Bully World Policy that harbors fear and loathing...So we gotta get busy working with OWS, 360.org, etc. or we'll be Right but Dead or considering the Dead lucky. Come on People, we gotta rally here.

(6,829 posts)We are being psy-opped all over the place with our lame stream media, which is engineered to play us all like a musical instrument, so that we are all serving at the pleasure of reptiles like the Koch Bros.. IT IS PERFECTLY LEGAL TO KNOWINGLY LIE ON YOUR NEWS BROADCASTS?* Well, that is technically correct, but it undermines the basic tenant of our Democracy - the need for an informed populous. And so many of us that consider ourselves well informed are merely highly conditioned to think of agenda driven corporate propaganda as facts and bona-fide.
However, on the bright side, based on ratings, it appears we are catching on and are relying on internet based ALTERNATIVE MEDIA, which seems to be in a growth mode. America is side stepping their Goebbels caliber MSM in favor of Thom Hartmann, Amy Goodman, Real News Network, and all those other online journalists that practice actual journalism, instead of Big Brother Mass Propaganda.

I'm still a hippie chick at heart and always will be. We did great things back then and brought forth many amazing changes in our country, but my greatest sorrow is that the environment is actually worse now than ever. I spend a lot of time thinking about that and how after President Carter, things went South. It saddens the hell out of me to see how materialistic we are now.

(15,435 posts)must change with the times!! I DO agree that we always need to make progress, but so much of the time I see so little interest from the younger generations.
Yes, the internet and every communication device out there are helpful, but having a HUMAN CONNECTION is much more meaningful to me. Using devices to get the word out can and is extremely helpful, but it's so impersonal and I'm not sure it's the best way to exhibit real commitment. We can sit and type, text, email or whatever else, but much of the time too many people think that's all that's needed.
I've found it's much easier to GOTV in person and has a stronger impact. I could go on, but back in the day we needed to show up and join "hands together" to make others sit up and take notice. Unfortunately we don't have many real journalists or media that want to cover much other than the excitement of what Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus is doing! The dumbing down of America... kind of how I see it myself! Kinda hurts MY SOUL!

(410 posts)Citizen's United, kids being worked to death in schools with standardized testing, parents stressed with multiple jobs and low wages.
About the only thing that hasn't changed much since that time is median wage. Meanwhile cost have climbed by hundreds of percent.
We have militarized police force, a surveillance state and free speech zones, dissent is stifled placed far out of sight.
Congress is loaded with millionaires and there are only a few who aren't there to serve themselves.
But, the bad news is, it is only going to get worse from here.
The historical economic trends from 1965 til today says proves this.
And piling on the bad news, the Democratic Party is doing as little as possible to stay relevant with liberals, while expending all their energy courting the magical "independent" conservative voters.
