He was convicted on substantial evidence. Something like nine eyewitnesses, AND Davis admitted to being at the scene with another man, when the victim was killed. He says that he didn't participate, but walked away. Did he, or didn't he? Nine eyewitnesses testified that Davis was the shooter.

Almost two decades later, several witnesses recanted their testimony. Most did not. It was disturbing that the case wasn't reopened. But it's not correct to say he was convicted on "insubstantial evidence." It was quite the contrary.

There are other cases out there, though, for you to use for comparison.
