CARVILLE: "Romney cannot beat Obama, only events can beat Obama."

"I think their assessment is that Romney is much less a threat to them as events are a threat to them, and I agree with that. Romney cannot beat Obama, only events can beat Obama."

-- James Carville, quoted by BuzzFeed, on whether the Obama campaign is worried about facing Mitt Romney in the general election.

1. Here's a good visual:

"But after six months of watching Romney drift deeper into traps they spent last year setting for him, Obama’s aides and allies view him with the slavering, gloating anticipation of a tiger stalking a wildebeest."

11. The problem with that visual is, tigers don't stalk wildebeests

Their respective habitats are a continent apart.

13. that'd be some high-quality stalkin!

Maybe that's the point he was trying to make? That his wildebeest stench is so strong, he can stalk him from a continent away!
No?
All right.

2. He's correct

The biggest threats to Obama's re-election are world events way beyond Romney's or the GOP or to a great extent Obama's control. Iran, Syria, terrorists, natural disasters, and the price of food and gasoline are the primary events which could rock the world, and our economy, in ways that could seriously hurt his chances. It is why I have a hard time "hoping" for a Santorum candidacy. Because if world events go really bad, I'd hate the choice to be between Santorum and Obama.

12. I just had a crazy thought.

What if Republicans are secretly begging and bribing and lobbying people of power in Israel so it attacks Iran, with a promise of help and large benefits if they win the Presidency?

5. I'd wondered where Carville has been lately

Hadn't seen his name in the news much lately, I'd been kinda' missing his wit and wisdom. I think of Carville as kind of an anti-Newt.

6. I've always thought of him more as a jerk

And that was even before I knew he was married to Matalin. I also wouldn't put it past the GOP to try to 'cook' a situation or event. I hope the Pres., his admin, security people, etc. stay on their toes.

8. I agree. Mittens is basically an empty suit.

He has no core and stands for nothing.

the House GOP will be spending the next 7 months trying to crash the economy.

15. Events beat Jimmy Carter

See Iran Hostages and disastrous rescue mission + bad economy + affable Reagan "holding his own" on TV in debate just before election.

Carter probably should have skipped that debate.

16. Events do matter a lot

There's no way to know because it happened early on, but I think Bush would have had a pretty tough time in 2004 without 9/11. It was a hard-fought election even with the legacies of 9/11 working in his favor.
