LA tries to keep its airwaves 'crack ho' and 'slut' free

Sorry Rush, but the days of saying "slut" on the airwaves may be over - at least in Los Angeles. City Council members passed a resolution today making the City of Angels's airwaves a racist and sex-slur free zone. LA becomes the first city in the country to adopt such a resolution, which demands that media companies do "everything in their power to ensure that their on-air hosts do not use and promote racist and sexist slurs." The resolution comes in the wake of the uproar that ensued when a couple of KFI 640 AM talk show jocks called Whitney Houston a "crack ho" three days after she died in February, as well as Limbaugh's labeling of Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke as a "slut."

1. Wonderful! I hope more areas/municipalities

take this on- by why has the FCC allowed this hate speech to go on so long on our public airwaves?

3. Do they actually have any power to do anything here?

It doesn't sound like it. It sounds more like a statement that the LA city council doesn't like certain words. I guess that's ok, but I believe what should happen in these cases already is happening. If you don't like what's said on a program, then contact the company and its advertisers and let them know how you feel. Also don't listen to the station and don't buy the products that are advertised on it. The power to deal with this is and should be in our hands.
