Sanford, Fla., explains why George Zimmerman was not arrested

“Zimmerman provided a statement claiming he acted in self defense, which at the time was supported by physical evidence and testimony,” the letter, signed by Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr., says. “By Florida Statute, law enforcement was PROHIBITED from making an arrest based on the facts and circumstances they had at the time.” (Caps are theirs.)

...................

The letter also addresses the 911 calls released this past weekend, in which Zimmerman tells the dispatcher he is going to follow Martin and the dispatcher responds: “You don’t need to do that.” Many people have asked whether that exchange can be used in the investigation. According to the letter, the dispatcher’s suggestion is not a lawful order that Zimmerman would have been required to follow.

Finally, the letter seeks to assuage some of the anger directed at Sanford. Many have accused the city of racism.

“As a father, I can only image the pain Trayvon’s family must be going though,” writes Bonaparte. “Although the Police Department is the target of the troubling questions, let me assure you we too feel the pain of this senseless tragedy that has dramatically affected our community.”

2. Last night Lawrence had the city manager on his show and..

he was questioned about this. Lawrence did a great job with the interview and got down to the nitty gritty.

I just put up a thread with a link to the video of the interview: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002455149

It is well worth the watch for anyone who missed the show last night.

3. Sanford city manager writes that "Stand Your Ground" law PROHIBITED cops from making an arrest.

Interesting.

6. Yes, if they actually didn't have probable cause, they can't arrest.

Not because of this law specifically, but generally, police can't arrest someone without probable cause.

Now whether a non-racist police department would have decided they *did* have probable cause? Yeah, I'll take that bet.

5. This is very damaging to Jeb Bush. He pushed and lobbied for this with the blessings and

money from the NRA. We won't forget Jeb..

7. Clearly based on the evidence shown to the American public

We disagree with the police dept in their determination of what the evidence shown. What I have seen, I would be wondering why my law enforcement didn't arrest Zimmerman based on the 911 tapes alone. I don't care, when you chase a human being down, and that human being ends up dead because of it...that is PROBABLE CAUSE for an arrest.

9. "...which at the time was supported by physical evidence and testimony..."

Let's see, only one guy had a weapon. Only one guy told his story.

Yup, case case closed.

10. Why didn't they question the girl Trayvon was talking to right before he was killed?

Why no investigation into that?
