Turned down a mostly free trip to Florida

Mr. TO95%'s aunt and uncle bought a condo in Delray Beach in 2011. The plan was to spend part of the winter there - January through the end of March - and the rest of the year back in NYC. There's been no winter to speak of this year and they headed home last week. My MIL called Mr. TO95% last night and said that his Uncle has offered us the Florida place anytime we might want next month. MIL said that our only real expense would be getting down there and - if we went after Pesach/Passover - we could find some cheap flights. For a moment, it was appealing and then we thought about Trayvon Martin. We thought about our penchant for taking walks - sometimes late at night - and our habit of looking at houses while we walked. We sometimes wear hoodies on our walks too. You know. Criminal behavior.

We turned down the offer. Thanks, but no thanks. We don't want to spend money in Florida right now. Maybe when the law is repealed. For now I'm not visiting or spending any money in any state that thinks giving people the right to shoot first and ask questions later is a good idea. So Philly is very nice but we won't be back. Kansas will have to do without me unless with all of this freakish weather a tornado swoops down on me in NYC and dumps in Topeka. We will just have to miss Seattle. No Kentucky Derby for us. Just another reason to bypass, Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana and Louisiana. We won't miss flying over Montana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Utah. New Hampshire will be harder. We do have fond memories of our vacations there; but Vermont is just as pretty. We will write certain legislators to let them know we won't be stopping by now that the unofficial state motto is "Live Free and Shoot First."

We're running our own personal boycott. It may be a drop in the bucket for some; but if enough people stop going to "vacation spots" where kids get gunned down in cold blood for looking "suspicious" than maybe the laws will get repealed. One can hope.

33. Thanks Tommy!

I just wallowed in the best 800 mile shithole of a trip I've ever taken in Florida. From Volusia County to Naples and the 'glades, then up through the gut back home. It was awesome! Saw things I never knew existed in Florida. Hiked and drove through refuge after preserve after park after conservation area for 5 days and came back with a wonderful new view of the state!

And this is from someone who was born in Miami, raised in Tampa and spent most of my 55 years here.

Thanks for your great post.

There are some beautiful places there. I've been sailing and snorkeling in The Keys etc., but there are so many negatives that contrast the physical beauty. The stifling humidity, the redneck assholes everywhere, and the politics added into the equation, cause my review to remain: Shit-hole.

Humidity? Doesn't bother me in the least. Keeps things nice and green.

Redneck assholes everywhere? Key word is "everywhere." Redneck assholes will be found everywhere, not just in Florida, not just in the South, but nationwide.

Politics? Okay, you do have a point there.....

Anyways, I live here. Lived here full time for over 10 years now. Bugs, heat and humidity don't bother me in the least. The politics do, but I'm the eternal optimist that we'll see some change in that department.

Like most of the country, Florida is deeply divided. Unlike some parts of the country, the Florida Democratic party apparatus is a joke. Consequently, the Repugs pwn every election here at the local and state-levels.

Mr. OT95% loves to drive and he loves history. On our previous extended excursions to FL and elsewhere, we've arrived generally in one part of a state and driven all over to visit sites of interest. Mr. OT95% doesn't like to sit in one place for two weeks so I imagine we would have gone North to Tampa where we both have relatives. From Tampa we'd head over to St Augustine and than work our way back to Delray.

15. Wow, just wow.

Delray Beach is in Palm Beach County - one of the most liberal areas you're likely to find anywhere. The downtown area is an eclectic mix of funky little shops, galleries and restaurants. I spent many a lovely Saturday during the 4 years I lived there, wandering the green market in the park followed by a lovely lunch along the main strip. What you would have found there was a kind & caring community with a strong love -- and support -- of the arts that is full -- as we ALL are -- of shock & dismay over the tragedy that occurred in Sanford..............but, you know, thanks for judging us.

We have bi-racial family members and we don't feel safe in some spots. Over the years we've been stopped on our travels for speeding for going a mile or two over the posted speed limit with other drivers whizzing by us. One memorable moment came in 2003 when we were driving through TN. We stopped for lunch at a place on the interstate and we were on a county road heading back to the interstate ramp when we were pulled over by the local sheriff for speeding. The cop asked Mr. OT95% to get out of the vehicle. The cop said he was speeding and, by the way, and I quote:

"What you doing with that nigra in the car?"

When Mr. OT95% replied that the child was our nephew, the cop asked "Yours or hers?"

Mr. OT95% told him it was my nephew. The cop looked him in the eye and said he'd divorce his wife if any of her family had a n-r baby.

Mr. OT95% had been patient - this wasn't the first time we'd been stopped - up to that point. He basically told the cop that he was a complete asshole, write the damn ticket and we'll be on our way. The cop wrote up a speeding ticket and we went on our merry way.

Boycotting Florida over the Martin case makes just about as much sense as boycotting NYC for Amadou Diallo, or boycotting California for Rodney King or Oscar Grant.

Yes, I know we have a horrible legislature and the NRA has it by the balls. That's not necessarily Florida unique, though.

Statewide boycotts just don't make much sense to me.

48. Florida passed a law

It isn't the law's or Florida's fault that the Sanford Police Department are misinterpreting/misusing it so they can cover up a terrible, horrifying act by a lone wackjob and their own incompetence and/or racism.

I'm seriously hoping the DOJ fires the whole goddamned department. Anyone who can prove they had no part in this disgusting thing can apply to come back or start new.

Side question: Can the police chief and/or officers be found guilty of criminal acts? Is covering up a crime not a crime itself?

I heard on the radio this morning that the City Manager is responsible for hiring/firing the Chief and he is now "looking at all the evidence" and will take the town councils no-confidence vote under advisement.

I hope he does the right thing.

Paradoxically, if you go far enough south in Florida, you leave the South and end up in someplace entirely different. Downtown Delray is like a mini-South Beach filled with Art Deco buildings. Palm Beach County, where Delray is, is reliably Blue, along with Broward (Ft. Lauderdale and Dade (Miami). Those counties, along with Pinellas (St. Pete), helped us carry FL in '08.

Last edited Thu Mar 22, 2012, 04:31 PM - Edit history (1)

I try not to support many companies. It's hard, sometimes impossible with one company having their hands in so many industries. You know, like The Koch dick-wads, but I made damn sure, my new roof didn't have wood from any Koch companies and we won't wipe our asses or blow our nose with any Koch product.

I won't go to Pet Smart, it's a Phoenix based company.

I don't buy any product with fragrance - they are toxic and give me migraines. I buy our cleaning products at Vitamin Cottage. All are made in the USA and vege based.

I buy clothes on eBay. Do I like the corporate eBay, not particularly, but it's ordinary people selling things.

I read all labels, if it's an "organic" Cascadian Farms frozen green beans or broccoli from China -won't buy!
It took a while, but I finally found frozen soy beans grown in the USA. At the Pet Store, I spent a few extra dollars on a toy made the the USA vs China. The state does not matter in these cases.

My new laptop is a Sony, sadly it was made in China, but we have family in Japan and we decided to support a Japanese company, in light of the Tsunami and Japans woes.

Anything else you'd like to know about my buying habits?

61. Not me.

These are your buying habits. People are free to patronize whatever businesses they choose.

I also don't patronize Pet Smart or any of the big pet store chains. My local place needs my business and they provide excellent service.

51. You should send a copy of that to the tourist board of every state

You chose not to visit.

Once the idiots who passed these laws realize how much they will cost them, the laws might get repealed.

And we plan on doing so with PA, NH and FL - all three states we have visited previously - and spent buckets of money. Mr. OT95% is a planner and budget forecaster in his work. We have our own budget on a spreadsheet and can tell what we spent on gas, meals, hotels and miscellaneous expenses for any year since 1998.

66. As a Floridian, I BEG you - PLEASE send this to the Governor

It seems that the Department of Tourism has disappeared. All that seems to be left is an unbelievably ugly sales portal for Florida tourist traps.

68. Thank you for the address

I'm also going to copy the headquarters address for the hotel chains we usually favor as well as the car rental place we use. If businesses start to feel the heat of this law, the profits going up in smoke might convince them to push for a repeal.

52. I know what you mean. . .

My personal bugaboo is Texas. I refuse to even fly through any of its airports & will actively look for flights to get around it.

56. ditto

I have felt that way about Texas since John Kennedy was killed in Dallas.
I know I'll be flamed but I don't care: Kennedy's murder and GWB = no Texas for this DUer

As for FLA. My gandfather left that state because of its racism in 1916 and never went back, not even to visit! FLA gave us the 2000 POTUS debacle and now Trayon. No thanks, I'll pass on it too. Plus it's so hot and humid and Disney World is such a racket!

59. Tell them I'LL take it!

I love Palm Beach County. Totally cool place.

Hell yeah I'll go! Tell 'em I'll even send them $50 a night AND hire a professional cleaning service to make sure the place is spic n span before I leave! (puttin' people to work, don't ya know...)

What's their number?

60. Thank you for your kind offer

The condo community has a limit on the number of times the unit can be rented out to non-family members. I think the number is four times per year. Anyway, these rental restriction policies are fairly common provision in a lot of FL HOAs.

If you're looking for a furnished place, I'd suggest using a service like www.homeaway.com

64. Interestingly.

I read a news story last year about Bob Dylan being picked up and taken to a jail because he was out wandering around looking at houses during the day of one of his concerts. It turned out that Dylan loved wondering around looking at houses that he considered interesting and took great pleasure out of seeing some of the unique structs that he came upon.

67. That's part of the reason the Trayvon Martin story struck so close to home.

I love checking out houses and the plantings. When I first moved to NYC from the Midwest, I'd wander around parts of Brooklyn looking at the Victorian homes and I noticed that, unlike the houses of that type back home, the front yards didn't have much in the way of plantings or hanging baskets. So one Sunday I'm strolling through this neighborhood and I see a house that's been freshly painted (paint company sign still in the yard) in the style of the "Painted Ladies" homes in SF and other places. An example can be found at the link below.

http://hookedonhouses.net/2008/05/22/columbia-tusculums-victorian-painted-ladies/

Anyway, I was admiring the house for no more than a minute or two, when a woman opens the front door and yells at me for looking at her house. Okay, welcome to NY. So I move on down the block and sure enough this private security force car rolls up and stops me. It seems someone called in a "suspicious person" walking through the neighborhood. That would be me. The rent-a-cop asked me what I was doing and, after he ascertained that this 100 pound woman wasn't casing anybody's home, we started chatting. The man told me that people didn't have nice plantings in the front yard or hanging baskets because they would be stolen. I never heard of a plant thief before, but I guess it happens.

71. Good for you - vote with your wallet!

Witholding your money from places you do not support is the only vote one can make today that really matters.
