24. "Medicare is a National Social Insurance Program.." started by Democrats..

"Medicare is a national social insurance program, administered by the U.S. federal government since 1966, that guarantees access to health insurance for Americans aged 65 and older who have worked and paid into the system, and younger people with disabilities as well as people with end stage renal disease (Medicare.gov, 2012) and persons with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As a social insurance program, Medicare spreads the financial risk associated with illness across society to protect everyone, and thus has a somewhat different social role from for-profit private insurers, which manage their risk portfolio by adjusting their pricing according to perceived risk".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medicare_(United_States)

All they have to do is get some googling skills on the net.. to see it's the teabaggers in Congress who want to do away with their Medicare. Get a majority of republicons in the 3 branches and see how fast their Medicare disappears.

36. Do you think the elderly lady sitting in her paid for Medicare scooter even knows what she's talking

about. She's mad because Faux Noise told her to be mad, scared, and to show up and hold a sign. They used flashing Red Alerts, lot's of noise and shouting, and "news reporters" and representatives of govt telling her she needs to be afraid of the black man now in office and that he's going to take away that fancy scooter she's sitting in.

They are lied to, swindled, and wound up like a jack in the box-- just about ready to spring out.

39. Because old women are stupid, is that it?

The other way of looking at it is they believe THEIR government program is going to be cut or defunded in order to pay for SOMEONE else's government program.

The interpretation - that they do not know Medicare is a government program - is merely an assumption being ascribed to the holder of the sign. The holder of the sign may very well know that Medicare is a government program, but has been led to believe it will be cut in order to pay for a broader program of "socialized medicine".

The interpretation ascribed to the sign is not the only one, nor is it a necessary implication.

But old people are ao dumb and confused that it is easy to make that interpretational assumption because, well, we all know how mixed up old people, and women in particular, are.

42. No, I don't think old women are stupid.. However, elderly are easier to scam as shown time and time

again by the statistics of them falling prey to some sort of phone scam... like the grandson in jail and needing bail or what not. Faux Noise wages psychological warfare on people on purpose. They create an environment of "news" that creates panic, fear, hate, and keeps people from supporting the most logical types of items... They are still talking about Fast and Furious and Benghazi... everytime Chris Christie is brought up, they spout off nonsence about Pres. Obama like they are being taught to do by deflecting the issues and the actual news of corruption. On top of that, we have religious outfits who are supporting the fear, lies, and "moral authority" over who's the Godly candidate vs. the Devil incarnate.

There is a reason they are trying to hold onto the little they have left. They see the country going to hell. They are afraid of being so poor that they are on the street. They long for those days back when everyone seemed to have money, 1 male making money, and black women doing maid service in their homes. They are told to hate the other. They are told that Obama is stealing from them and giving to "his people" and illegal immigrants. AND face it, most people in this country have very little to spare to make way for some unknown program that may make it even tougher for them. AND these elderly people are near or coming into retirement. Fixed incomes with ever increasing disparities is incredibly scary for people.

49. No, but statistically, they are the majority of the Republican base.

I've learned some of the best things from my elders. It's invaluable types of information and experience that shouldn't be discounted or thrown away.

A personal disgust of mine is the old vs young war on who has it worse. And who should get more support. Let's face it 35 and younger are screwed in this job market of ever lowering the wages and making jobs competitive as all hell. Older workers are being thrown overboard because of their insistence of being paid accordingly (many grew up with the Unions having some clout and having experience and knowledge as enough to enter into a job market and also be paid a living wage, pensions, and benefits).

It's just another divisional pittance of putting people at odds with one another. And you can't really blame some of the younger generation on some of these social issues that effect their lives. We have gay families. We have mixed families. We have huge burdens of educational debts. We see the work that needs to be done and should be done and a modern FDR type of plan to go into effect, yet Republicans were elected with their fear and hate and mid-term low turn outs... So nothing is getting done and people are stuck. On the other side, I get the economic fears of literally starting over with almost nothing and staring down retirement without enough funds.

Another case where we must work together and insit on living wages, retirement abilities, healthcare as a right, and the wealthy and corporations to pay their fair share. We are all being screwed over and pissed on. It needs to end, even if we dump the 2 major corporately funded parties and start electing those who will work for the people. Those of the Warren and Sanders variety (of which many sit in a Green Party or label themselves independent).

56. I completely agree.

Actually, I have so much sympathy for the younger people today. I have seen ups and downs, bad economies and good economies, but I have never seen this much burden on the generation coming of age now. And I don't know what kind of advise to give anymore. This is unsustainable if we are to stay a first-world country. We cannot throw away a whole generation. The only hope that I have is that things will improve here, and the young people will have the opportunity to get out of debt from school and will be able to buy homes and raise families....and these people will know the hard times and will not make the same mistakes that many in my generation made. Too many gave their kids too much so that they did not learn that everything is not easy, we did not save nor did we teach our children to save, and we assumed that things would always get better. What a mistake!

I believe that my parent's generation had it probably better than any other generation that I am aware of, at least for the working classes (since that is where my family falls). My parents went through the Great Depression, so they knew about hard times. But they also saw strong unions, good manufacturing jobs with benefits including fully paid health insurance from their companies with (maybe) a $50 deductible, company pensions, upward mobility, one income could easily support a family, and there was no talk of pulling the rug out from under them with changes to Social Security and Medicare that would destroy their "golden years".

I think that most of the teabaggers that are visible are older people because they have free time. I know way too many younger people who are extremely conservative (I seem to be one of the few liberals at work and in my neighborhood), but the younger and middle aged conservatives are at work or at their kid's myriad of activities.

If we don't change the attitude of the majority in this country, we will be doomed to a spiral of decline for all but the upper classes. Until the time comes where common people rise up, and that will take a long time to simmer before it explodes, but it will if we continue.

38. I'll take the contrarian view here

The person with the sign is expressing a sentiment along the lines of:

"Don't cut MY socialized medicine to provide it for people under 65."

I'm not sure the person is "so stupid they don't realize Medicare is a government program." They may perfectly well understand that. One of the scare stories about the ACA was that subsidies for low income policies would be coming out of Medicare.

The sign simply may be a reflection of that thought - i.e. that Medicare, a government program limited to older Aericans, would be cut or diluted in order to extend coverage to everyone else.

It's wrong, but may not be as brain dead as being interpreted here.

But, hey - Lookit! A stupid old woman! Whoopee!

40. You might be right, but........

I doubt it. The first sign like this I saw (and it was mentioned by someone above) was something along the lines of "Get your government hands off my Medicare." THAT would imply that NONE of them know what they're talking about.

41. No, it would imply that ONE person doesn't know what they are talking about

So, let me make sure I understand you. When lots of different people in widely separated places demonstrate, then whatever one person has on their sign is believed by every other person in the protests.

Is that how you reach your conclusion?

There may in fact be the sign you describe, but that doesn't at all lead to the conclusion that the interpretation being ascribed to the one in this "let's taunt the stupid old woman" thread is necessarily the correct interpretation.

44. It also implies that all the other people at the protest

were 1) just as ignorant or 2) afraid to tell that person to ditch the sign because it made them all look like fools.

55. Stupid is as stupid does

Actually, the Fox/Limbaugh 24/7 propaganda machine is very, very effective and preys on those less informed.

Case in point: I saw a custodian who had worked in my building back in 2004 and was always telling me how much John Kerry hated veterans and how Kerry was un-American. Attempts to engage and discuss were met with derision. He was a vet and he KNEW. Despite our political differences, he was someone I really liked, so when we were each assigned elsewhere I missed seeing him.

I ran into him a few months ago. He and his wife really want to retire, but need to wait a few years longer when they will both qualify for Social Security benefits. Sadly, he couldn't leave it there. He concluded by saying, "That is unless Obamacare ruins it for all of us."

Huh? I just left it alone. I walked away sad. He will continue to vote for the very people who will happily strip away his pension and his Social Security and leave him and his wife old, poor, and afraid. Phooey on the right wing and their efforts to make sure people are poorly informed.

The propaganda works. People are fooled. It is sad and we have to ask the question: is our species really fit to survive? I mean maybe but we've got to overcome a lot of ignorance if we are going to.
