Well. I am now Technically Homeless (But I'm Lucky)

My unemployment insurance ran out 4 months ago, the "Texas Jobs Boom" is a myth, and my bungalow was foreclosed on. I moved out yesterday. But like the headline says, I'm one of the lucky ones. My older brother Sean is an engineer living here in Everett, WA who is not a member of the 1% but probably is in the 7-or-8 percent, and has allowed me to move in with him and his family. I shall have to listen (again) to his lectires about my Liberal Arts degree vs. something more concrete like--you guessed it--engineering, but hey, maybe he's right. Even if not, the bottom line is that I have a roof over my head tonight.

Again, and I cannot stress this enough, I am one of the lucky!

He's a fiscal conservative but soured on the GOP after the Shrub's unaccounted-for expenditures.

13. Sean is not necessarily right

But is a good brother.

There is nothing wrong with the Liberal arts degree.

You follow your heart. And you are exactly where you are supposed to be right now.

Who knows, maybe for your brothers benefit more than your own

And my bro is not so bad. He's just your basic old-school Irish Catholic who believes in conservative principles, and has grown distrustful of profligate GOP spending.

22. My nephew went the practical route with a degree in engineering

from an excellent school. It was a natural fit for him, so he has no regrets.

However, it took him a year to find a job, and that was at about 2/3 of the pay that previous graduates of his college (in his major) had been making.

A friend of mine tried to help him out and contacted his friends in business, and was surprised that he could find no openings for my nephew to apply to.

Tell your bro that even an engineering degree these days isn't a guarantee of a first job, or protection against future unemployment.

25. You're right, of course

But Sean is already well-established in the profession. New engineers (or any college grads) are having a difficult time now.

5. I'm living with my brother and his wife (and son when he comes home from college)

in Kenmore. As much as I roll my eyes and have to bite my tongue, I realize I'm really lucky, too. Lucker than you -- my brother and sister-in-law don't lecture me.

Hope things turn around for you soon! And for me, too!

Best of luck getting back on your feet and so glad you have family that is willing to help. Be patient with your brother, his lecturing is coming from a good place, he cares about you and wants to see you in a good place in your life...take care of yourself.

12. Glad you landed in a safe palce.

trading texas sunshine for Everett's greyness is going to be a change, tho, unless you are used to it.
Everett is my hometown, and you can see where I fled to.
Once upon a time, not that long ago, Everett was blue collar dem.
And it is famous for the union strikes and the Wobblies battles on the waterfront...look that up and tell your brother all about it.

14. You are so lucky...

First off you have a place to stay

Secondly this is probably better than the first reason, you are out of Texas

Third you are really close to Seattle

You have a liberal arts degree, it might not be terribly practical, but being near Seattle might make it a bit more practical. If you have any ambitions to write there are probably some outlets around there that would appreciate your talent.

15. Yes, indeed.

I have had a similar experience, except that now the Unemployment people have decided that I owe them $1,282 because I resigned from my part-time job to move a state away--in order to live rent free with a close friend. I have appealed their 'decision' and plan to do so again--and, as many more times as I can, until they deprive me of that option. I don't know where they expect me to get that much money. I guess they think I can poop it out of my ass.

18. Husband, with degree and 25+ years computer experience, has been out of work x2 years.

We're living on our savings while getting our business started.

I know unemployed engineers in WA who have gone through their savings. One used to own two homes on ten acres of land; he's renting a small apartment, now.

No one is without risk.

19. Welcome to Washington!

There are worse places to be than Everett. Perhaps your brother can get you in to Boeing. Not everyone there has engineering degrees, but it does help to know someone. If he doesn't work there already he may know someone who does.

The job market here isn't as bad as many other places in the country. I don't know what you normally do for work but I do know that getting that offer can take some time. I know several people who are looking and it seems like 2 or 3 interviews are the norm before hiring managers make a decision. It's a grind. If you have office or customer service skills try Volt Temporary Services. They usually have the best long term temp assignments which is also a big trend here. This way they can avoid offering benefits. Microsoft uses them quite a bit. Also check out the local Work Source Office. There is one in downtown Everett and they are a great place to get resume feedback and interview classes. It's Free!

Good Luck and keep us posted on your hunting. There is a Career Help and Advice Group here on DU as well if you want a safe place to vent.

37. I'm now SERIOUSLY feeling the Time Zone Difference!

Jeez, it's only midnight here, but it feels like 2 AM! Anyway, I'm going to bed I thank everyone in this thread for their words of support. And, if anybody posts more encouragement in this thread after this beddy-bye, I promise to thank you tomorrow!

We should all be grateful for what we have, realizing that too many of our fellow citizens have not enjoyed good luck. I really wish I could wave a magic wand to make everything okay in America, which I still consider to be the greatest country on Earth. Alas, I am only one man. But I'm glad to be here on DU, and I thank you for welcoming me. Good night.
