The war on women continues: Lawmaker Suggests Beaten Ladies Remember the Good Times

A thoughtful, sensitive male Wisconsin legislator has proclaimed that he is against divorce under all circumstances — even spousal abuse. And he's got a message to all those ladies out there getting the shit beaten out of them by their husbands: remember the good times, back before things took an abusive turn, and maybe you'll fall in love again. There, isn't that better? Now, chin up, and go back out into that awful marriage of yours like a champ.

The obtuse anti divorce champion is Republican Don Pridemore. And this isn't the first time the Heartless Cheesehead has acted in a manner most unbecoming.

Remember earlier this month when another Wisconsin lawmaker thoughtfully suggested that maybe single parenthood should be considered a factor that may be indicative of child abuse? Pridemore was a co-sponsor of the bill that would've made it a crime for a person to dare try to raise a child on their own outside of the pillowy soft Magic Zone of marriage. But what about women who are being abused by their husbands? Shouldn't they have the option to extract themselves from an unhealthy situation? Nope, says Pridemore. And he's got some expert abused spouse marital advice as well: "If they can refind those reasons and get back to why they got married in the first place it might help."

So, the solution to divorce and spousal abuse is just remembering why you love your abuser? Did he learn about love, relationships, and psychology from tragic early country songs?

don't really know what else to say....... it feels like we are being dragged kicking and screaming back to the 1800's...

History

To fully understand the roots of domestic violence in our society, it is helpful to review some historical points. Unfortunately, abuse of an intimate partner has been a part of many cultures for many generations.
•British common law once allowed a man to "chastise" his wife with "any reasonable instrument."

•In the United States, throughout the 1800s, state laws and cultural practices continued to support a man's right to discipline his wife. In fact, it wasn't until 1895 that a woman could even divorce her husband on grounds of abuse.

Between this and Rick Santorum declaring war on porn - the GOP is quickly turning into the American Taliban party.

any of the GOP base issues: evolution, gays, separation of church and state, drugs, birth control, abortion, same sex marriage, pornography. I imagine the Taliban would also go after title 10 and Planned Parenthood. So they fundamentally agree on the social issues and I can't imagine the Taliban have much in the way of economic issues. They remind me of the Religious Police from when I was in Saudi Arabia.

On so many levels.

Doubt this message resonates with many females or males.

Save those males who are abusive in their relationships (or lost relationships due to their abusiveness). For them this is just vindication that their actions are acceptable and that their wife should just take the abuse.

Nice (not) little glimpse into this particular (and seemingly popular) world view among some republican law makers.

Because it is so easy to reason with a spouse that has an alcohol or drug problem, which is the cause of a lot of spousal abuse. I guess as long as the woman isn't beaten senseless EVERY day, she can remember the good times, right?

Dear God. This has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You can't "re-find those reasons" with someone that isn't emotionally healthy, and frankly, anyone that is guilty of spousal abuse is far from emotionally healthy.

He's advocating major co-dependency and if there are children in a home where they aren't abused but the mother is, it has lasting and horrific affects on their future. But we all know that in a home where the wife is abused, the kids might not get beaten physically, but they suffer terrible emotional abuse.

He's advocating creating a sick society.

Well said! Years ago I spoke with an ex that is a raging alcoholic, and still in denial. The convo went something like this:

Me: "You drank a case a night. I saw you."

Ex: "That's only because you didn't help me with it!"

Ahhh... no arguing with that "logic".

You can't reason with someone that has none 20 or 30% of the time they are around you because they are too intoxicated or high to think rationally. And that's being generous. For those that work all of the time and start drinking the minute they get home, their spouse really only gets a fragment of sobriety around such a person.

Most sane women would be telling him to remember the "good times" when his clothes weren't on the front lawn, the locks changed, and the bank account drained.

I'm a lesbian and I was involved in a bad relationship with a woman once, and that's what she got greeted with one day. I don't regret it for a second and if she found another woman to put up with her, I'd imagine that event will forever be in her mind.

5. Rampant sexism

Beyond the simple fact that the political elite and the national culture were male-dominated, these regimes inevitably viewed women as second-class citizens. They were adamantly anti-abortion and also homophobic. These attitudes were usually codified in Draconian laws that enjoyed strong support by the orthodox religion of the country, thus lending the regime cover for its abuses

Sure. Any abuse is disgustingly wrong, whether it be male on female, female on male, female on female or male on male. It is wrong. Period. I have worked with abused children. I imagine abused adults have similar issues to what I saw. It haunts you, what these kids went through.
