Kansas Town Installs Phone Prayer Booths, So Residents Can ‘Call God Whenever They Need’

Kansas City, KS – Kansas City resident Michelle Ioda woke up early this Sunday morning. As she does on most Sundays, Michelle plans to make the morning worship service at her local church. But this Sunday, she rose a little early so she could visit a nearby prayer booth recently installed by her city council.

“The Chiefs are playing the Broncos. I forgot to go pray last Monday and for all I know, that is why Manning’s ankle MRI came back negative. If I had prayed, maybe God would have sprained it a little more and he would be out this week.”

Ioda’s belief in the power of prayer is fervent and mirrors many of her neighbors, she said. Since the booths were put in throughout town several months ago, Kansas City data tracking confirms that on average, the prayer booths receive over 100,000 callers per week.

“It is therapeutic, that is how we lobbied them through city council,” local pastor Reverend Miles Collier reports. ”We said these prayer booths are not just for Christians, but for any person to take a break to close their eyes, ask out loud for what they need in life and just take a break from it all. It is like having a free counseling session.”

37. My very first thought exactly!

How much fun would it be to install a wireless speaker in one of these booths and sit in a parking lot near the booth drinking Margaritas and dispensing heavenly wisdom.

2. Oh goody.

Who paid for these silly things? If I need to take a break and offer up a prayer I don't need a special booth for it.

That would certainly explain the chaos down here.

8. I couldn't believe this was real; thought it was something from The Onion

or the like. Googled it - it's real.

This is one of the goofiest things I've ever heard of. If you believe in a god, why can't you just pray to him/her/it wherever? Why do you need a fake phone booth?

WTF?

Also, why was that woman praying for some football player to have an injury? I thought God didn't like that sort of thing.

9. Surely only a vengeful, Old-Testament type of God would deliberately sprain someone's ankle.

Granted, an ankle sprain is not on a par with striking someone with lightning or causing them to burst out in septic boils, but still. If I was God and someone prayed to me for a football player to sprain his ankle I would not only refuse the request, but I would also arrange for the person praying to step in some dogshit shortly afterwards.

So maybe the God she was praying to is more like you would be.

(yes I am aware this is satire. Still, it's even funnier since the Chiefs did lose.)

19. I'm very skeptical - this may be a hoax

For one thing, the prayer towards a bad MRI and football victory is a little over the top. For another thing, those photos of green lawned areas are not what Kansas City looks like today...its fall, and its brown.

But the kicker - her 'city council' could not have installed these. Kansas City Kansas has operated under a unique form of government for 15 years, called the 'Unified Government' of Wyandotte County. There isn't a city council. There is a Board of Commissioners. Small detail, but the story seems to miss out on this detail, and doesn't ring true.

Also, the characterization of Kansas City as a 'Kansas Town' makes it seem like a tiny village right out of Andy Griffith. KCK is a major metropolitan area, and one of the most blue areas in Kansas.

34. Shouldn't that be a "Prayer Closet," instead of a booth?

Matthew 6:6

Just sayin'. If you're going to pray for the opposing team's quarterback to sprain an ankle, Jebus will hear your prayer better if you make it in a closet, instead of in public. It might be embarrassing, you know, and God is not mocked, after all.
