Rush Limbaugh Closes First Hour With Dead Air

Beautiful silence!

Rush Limbaugh Closes First Hour With Dead Air
March 08, 2012 1:50 pm ET by MMFA Staff

Rush Limbaugh closed the first hour of his radio show on his flagship station, WABC, with 1:03 of dead air Monday.

From WABC's online feed:

While advertisers have fled Limbaugh's show since his misogynistic attacks on Sandra Fluke, the first hour of every show since those attacks aired on March 1 has concluded with at least one ad leading into an ABC News break at the top of the second hour. On Wednesday, the first hour concluded with an ad from Matrix Direct, which has told radio stations to stop airing its ads during The Rush Limbaugh Show.

At least 46 advertisers have reportedly dropped their ads from Limbaugh's radio show since his attacks on Fluke.

He said that some sponsors have already asked to come back to his
show and that many more people are trying to sign up as sponsors
right now but it will be a few weeks before they will be on the air.

Hell both Goodwill Industries and the American Heart Association will
not advertise on Rush for free.

If any company had an ad ready to run, they'd run it today, so long as money exchanged hands.

Several weeks delay? My ass. As for companies begging to return? Riiiiiight. I have contacted no less than 14 companies, thanking them for leaving. Each time, they said that was the common reaction, and they thanked me for my thanks and support.

The SS Limbaugh is approaching the Italian shore, and bloviating at fool speed ahead.

.... and put it on the air. Rush did say that any problems had nothing to
do w/ his national show but some "glitches" @ the local stations w/ the
18,000 sponsors of his show.

Just like Rep. Issa could have had Ms. Fluke testify or Rush could have done a

16. More likely than not this was an automation failure at WABC.

I used to be a local board-operator for the Limbaugh show on WOND (which dropped the show more than a month ago I'm proud to say) and I know how the show is structured.

An hour of Limbaugh's show ends at :58:50. A station's "Legal ID" (the top of hour identification required by the FCC, including call sign and city of license) plays at :59:50. The one minute gap is there for local stations to play an ad or other local material. (Some stations will do 60 seconds of local headlines and weather leading into the network news at the top of the hour, for example.)

During most local breaks, the network will feed either PSA's or other filler material during that time in case a station forgets to go to their local spots or (as is starting to happen with Limbaugh now) has nothing it can air at that time. This is not the case at :58:50, however. At :58:50 the network goes silent for one minute so if a station doesn't cut away for local material, then there is silence.

The silence is there because from the top of the hour until about :05:00 the network runs "closed circuit" feeds. If a station has paid (!!) to have Limbaugh or his announcer do liners with the station's name or call-sign they'll often be fed in this spot. They also feed produced promotional spots that stations can tag with the time the show airs locally and their name or call letters. If there's any time left they'll fill with "comedy" bits and songs that have featured in the show or with filler music. Then there's another minute of silence until :06:00 when the theme music comes up, with Rush speaking at :06:20.

The minute of silence on each side is to make sure that none of the closed circuit material airs on any station by mistake, and so a station recording the feed for the closed circuit material can easily find the material by fast forwarding a tape or looking for the huge dead spots in the waveform.

As much as I would love to attribute this to a lack of sponsors that's probably not the case. Someone at WABC responsible for programming the automation computer probably forgot to put a spot in that place, or the sound file that should have played there was damaged. Then at :58:50 the trigger tone from ABC Network News for the Legal ID reset the system and put everything back to normal.

"Dead air" is anathema to a radio station. Even if there were no advertisers there they'd put *something* on to try to hold the listeners' attention, or to indicate to those who just tuned in that, "Yes, we're here".

Some of the filler material was hilarious. Back during the late 90's almost every day's closed circuit feed ended with "You Don't Have To Look At Pictures On the Radio" by the National Lampoon.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

http://www.americablog.com/2012/03/limbaugh-down-to-one-paid-advertiser-in.html

Rush Limbaugh is in trouble. Two days ago he didn't have a single unpaid public service announcement on his flagship show on WABC in NYC. Yesterday, 56% of his ads in NYC were unpaid PSAs. Today, 90% were unpaid PSAs, and the show included three occurrences of 'dead air'.

Here's a breakdown with the help of Media Matters' data:

86 ads aired today on Limbaugh's show on WABC in NYC
3 occurrences of dead air

1 Advertiser sticking with Limbaugh
2 Small Business Authority ads in association with the Corporate Tax Network

3 Advertisers who have asked ads to be pulled
3 Netflix ads (Netflix has never intentionally advertised on his show, the ads are being pulled)
1 O'Reilly Auto Parts ad (Already asked to be pulled)
3 Constant Contact ads (Already dropped)
77 Free PSAs
7 United Negro College Fund ads (unpaid psa)
6 Feeding America ads (unpaid psa)
6 Big Brothers Big Sisters ads (unpaid psa)
14 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ads (unpaid psa)
14 Save the Children ads (unpaid psa)
17 American Heart Association ads (unpaid psa)
13 NY City Office of Emergency Management (unpaid psa)

69. isn't that the space that WABC gives to affiliates to run local ads?

Air America Radio had the same thing for the on-line stream but they filled it with really lame instrumental music.... over and over and..

73. WABC IS an affiliate and did stream full commercial breaks previously.

Some streaming radio stations I've listened to have muted commercial breaks or replaced them with elevator music (for instance Colorado's Progressive Talk). I doubt that WABC radio over the air would have been silent for AN ENTIRE COMMERCIAL BREAK.

Anyway, MMFA has the full breakdown of the commercial break silence. In fact the breaks included SOME commercials, then silence. Also, the only ad-free dead air came between the final segment of an hour and station ID/ABC News bulletin.

According to think progress: "A spokesperson for WABC wouldn’t say whether the silence was caused due to a technical glitch or Limbaugh’s fleeing sponsors."

Furthermore, MMFA's summary of March 7 commercial breaks showed that WABC's online stream had full commercial breaks.

75. Technical glitch?

I see there is also 2:38 of dead air leading into Limbaugh.

Does these technical glitches occur only during Rush Limbaugh's program?

It sounds like Rush is radioactive. Maybe WABC and other stations can fill the void with PSAs related to nuclear waste disposal.

79. Advertisers Fleeing the bloated windbags hate filled show, YESSSSssssssss....

I love hearing that advertisers are fleeing the bloated windbags hate filled show, I sure hope they don't come back when the next big story for the media pushes Rush back into the shadows. I must shout out a big Thank you to "Rage Against the Machine" for raging against the Rush hate machine. Also, I couldn't resist drawing another Rush Toon, this time it's about Rush's non apology, apology, it's up now.
