10. Guinness is great stuff - even better when in Ireland!

I was told that the Guinness gets better the closer you get to the brewery. I put that theory to test for sure - did it get better? They all tasted like another.
I really, really like the fact that our president is a beer fan!

11. One thing to be careful of is that all beer has an expiration date. No doubt the reason why

Guiness is said to get better closer to the brewery. Buy a sixer in Lewiston, ID and you'd better check the date, if you can read it. I worked at a beer distributor for years and they used this Julian dating code that a consumer couldn't read. If your local distributor has guys that aren't doing their job and pulling outdated beer, you can get some pretty stale stuff. Light beers, in clear bottles, will go skunky. Canned beers get a weird taste. I would describe it as just a little bit of tomato juice poured in it but not enough to be like a red beer. Dark beers hold up the best, even if expired, but do loose their best flavor. No beer gets better as it ages once on the market.

12. Good Info - Thanks!

I've read that with beers from small places like Summit, Boulevard, Sierra Nevada - and others, the beers will be good up to 2 months after the date posted on the beer itself. Would that be more for the darker porters and stouts and less for the pilsners and lagers?
I sure know the skunky nastiness when we would get Heineken as a treat when I was young - it seemed like it always tasted that way, but it was supposed to be so great.
When my wife and I years later went to Amsterdam for our honeymoon, Heineken was actually a real good beer.

13. There is a difference between a high hop flavor in a lighter beer and true skunky

flavor from one that has gone bad. One is an aquired taste and another will make you head pound and make you feel sick. It could be that your Heineken, not one I ever tried, was supposed to taste like that. It's probably likely that it was both. An imported German light beer that sat on the shelf too long.
