GAWD, I hope that they pick Ted Cruz as their presidential nominee

This guy's PERFECT! He's a dream come true.

He's says the most outrageous shit, and doubles down on it whenever he pisses people off en masse. He's a con man that just about anyone with more than .0002% of sense can see right through.

He would be completely UNelectable in a national election… Better yet, he would kill the GOP's hope of taking the White House for a generation.

He could single-handedly break the Republican's strangle-hold on the top marginal tax base in this country.

I hope that he NEVER stops talking. The wingers love this guy and they are completely oblivious to the fact that he could wreck their entire hopes for a political future.

He's in Iowa and the local Dems see the writing on the wall as well, they're PROMOTING his ass.

Did you see the welcome he got from IA Gov. Branstadt? I thought that he was going to spit on the ground after saying his name… And HE's A freaking Republican! Imagine if Cruz got the nom and all the GOP moderates like Branstad had to hold their breath to vote for the guy. The GOPers would stay away from the polls in droves.

Cruz is magic, people!

3. Yup.

He would save the Dems a bundle by defeating the republican party single-handedly.

He is a once-in-a-lifetime gift.

4. People said the same thing about Stupid in 2000

and then the PTB cheated that piece of shit into office TWICE.

I would rather they run a sane candidate just in case the PTB cheat another one into office.

6. No they didn't

They/we said that he was not smart enough to be a good President, and we were right.

Nobody said that he was dividing his own party or that Republicans would not turn out to vote for him.

How old are you? Do you really not remember 2000?

5. That would be sort of unusual to have

the President destroy the country. I'm fairly sure he would get into the White House if he ran. After all the repubs have 3 years to fix the election.

might not be willing to accept anyone else.

He really might end up splitting the party.

16. Jennifer Granholm didn't have a U.S. citizen parent.

Most of the experts who've studied the question have concluded that Cruz is eligible. I agree, based on the law that was in effect as of the date of his birth.

19. I disagree, for two reasons

First, the allegations against Cruz aren't true. Yes, some people who are now his ardent supporters were willing to press lies against Obama, but I choose not to descend to their level.

Second, as a practical matter, I don't want to see a Cruz campaign for the Republican nomination derailed by this or by anything else. I would love to see him as their nominee. Short of a third-party campaign by the Tea Party types, that would be the best thing that could happen to the Democratic Party.

20. You're free to disagree--I'll keep giving Carnival Cruz shit.

He's not going to be the candidate. His star is already fading.

The RNC gatekeepers won't let him pass go or collect the nomination.

21. You're certainly right that the RNC gatekeepers don't WANT him to get the nomination.

One interesting question for 2016 will be whether the right-wing base can overpower the traditional gatekeepers. I wouldn't rule it out.

The standard argument from the Republican establishment has been that the fire-breathing conservatives should put aside their ideological preferences in favor of a more centrist candidate who can win. The conservatives, however, are not shy about pointing out that this approach has been tried and found wanting in the last two elections. Their mantra is that Ronald Reagan scored two decisive victories because he was a forthright and unapologetic conservative. They really believe that this is what the electorate is hungering for. (One of them on Free Republic said a couple years ago that if Palin were the Republican nominee, she'd get 55% of the vote.)

Hoping for a substantial third-party candidacy, a Nader of the right, that hands the election to the Democrats is unrealistic. A ticket with Cruz (or Palin) on it, on the other hand, is probably odds-against but it's not as completely off the wall as the Freedom Party that Palin suggested. I'm going to go on hoping.

22. Cruz can raise crazy money, but he can't raise the kind of dough needed to break down the walls.

He's not going to get any of the GOP Senate PAC money either. Those guys hate him.

Look at how much rMoney had to spend--of his own cash, too, not just his rich pig-pals' donations--to persuade the RNC to let him grab the brass ring? I just don't think Cruz-Outta-Control has the discipline or the star power to raise that kind of scratch.

He may surprise me, but he comes off like a poutin' dilettante to me--lotta talk, not much walk.

3rd party ticket? Maybe, but only if he wants to go down in flames....

18. My instinct says the same, but part of me sees it as a dangerous, dangerous game.

Yes, we would hope that he is unelectable in the general election. But the consequences if we are wrong about that don't bear thinking about. So do we want a complete nut like Cruz or Palin to get the nomination, with the assumption that there is no way they can win? Or do we hope for someone saner like a Jon Huntsman or a Chris Christie, so just in case they do win, things won't be as bad as they might be? It's tricky.

24. Cruz is just running interference for Rand Paul, like a fullback heading into the defensive line.

What Cruz has been doing for the last 6 months or so is mobilizing the GOP base of whackadoodles, nut jobs, cranks, and crazyass "black helicopter" Republicans that have always been out there.
It's the same thing that Michelle Bachman has done for years, but Cruz uses a little more Christian fundamentalist, "fire and brimstone" approach, along with his credentials as the former Texas State Solicitor General.

By keeping them stirred up, Cruz is also keeping them focused on making sure only "real Americans" are elected to Congress . . not liberals.
Cruz talks about how America has changed so much ever since that Kenyan muslim has somehow managed to slip into the White House and disgraced our nation.

All Cruz is doing is appealing to the most extreme, radical voters on the very fringe edges of the Republican party to ensure that they will stay angry enough to still go to the polls and vote for Republicans.

At the same time, Rand Paul will pull back on his rhetoric, while he makes his pitch to the moderates, the independents, and the undecided voters.
There's still 3 years to go before the 2016 election, and they have a lot of time . . and money . . before then to tarnish the President, the Democrats in Congress, and the liberal concept of ensuring that we still have the safety nets in our society of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
