Demanding a change to the way business is done in Washington, President Barack Obama on Thursday urged lawmakers to ignore lobbyists, bloggers, "talking heads on radio" and "the professional activists who profit from conflict."
"How business is done in this town has to change," Obama said during a press conference.
"Now that the government is reopened and this threat to our economy is removed, all of us need to stop focusing on the lobbyists and the bloggers and the talking heads on radio and the professional activists who profit from conflict, and focus on what the majority of Americans sent us here to do and that's grow this economy."
"There's a lot of noise out there, and the pressure from the extremes affect how a lot of members of Congress see the day-to-day work that's supposed to be done here," he said.
That last line reflects an argument, made by several pundits in recent weeks, that far-right pundits like Rush Limbaugh have pressured Republicans into backing down from the extremist wing of their own party.

(18,402 posts)I was getting thirty-eleven emails every day during the shutdown, with screaming headers and requests for money. (I usually only get eleven a day; this was a veritable explosion). Not just the DSCC, DCCC, Organizing for America, and a slew of senators and representatives (to name a few: Jeff Merkley, Patrick Leahy, Elizabeth Warren, Dick Durbin, Tammy Duckworth, and a ton more) but every Progressive organization as well as places like Vote Vets, etc.
Now exactly what, I ask you, was my $3 or $12 or $15 or $25 or $150 (various amounts that were suggested to me) going to do 3 hours before the shutdown to "stop" it?
I deleted everything, and it made me mad.
The only group to whom I have donated in response to an email lately has been Southern Poverty Law Center. And I will tell you why (aside from the fact that I give to them regularly--but usually not in response to emails; just an annual donation). I did it because they told me exactly what they were going to do with it. And it was a compelling case. They gave examples of some serious death threats they'd been receiving from hate groups (it's normal for them, and they don't care for themselves), but also, a Neo-Nazi group just put up the names and addresses and personal data of their employees and colleagues, including pictures of their children. They were asking for money for security for all these people. That got my attention, and I felt as if I knew that my donation would be put to a good, specific use.
I'm tired, however, of everybody capitalizing on all the sturm und drang in Washington to collect money. Sometimes I think they create it specifically to raise money. I'm putting an end to it: don't call me, I'll call you.
