Looking for support for a new DU group: "Progressive Media Resources Group" Come Visit!!!

Last edited Fri Nov 1, 2013, 08:01 PM - Edit history (2)

UPDATE: We have the group: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1269

Please contribute ideas, start a discussion, say "Hello"!

EDIT: Shortening name from "New Progressive Media Resources Access Group"

to "Progressive Media Resources Group"

Hi!

We are looking for support from as many members as possible, and if it's there will propose the idea to Skinner.

Progressive Media Resources Group

Statement of Purpose:

A safe place to share and discuss wider ranging news, views and opinion from both internal alternative US news sources and Global sources available through external wireless or ethernet connected alternative delivery systems.

Alternative formats might include podcasts, streams, and other emerging formats that carry Left/Progressive Voices reporting about Current Topics in USA/Politics/Global Financial, Food and Water Resources, Climate Change News, etc.

We'll check in from time to time and try to answer any questions.

TIA!

8. Nah...sound like more of a Resource for New Progressive Media.

Links and stuff. I know I'm sick of MSM and there's so much good stuff out on Podcast, Streaming and new Devices to watch at home bypassing cable that it sounds very forward thinking. Lots of folks miss "Current TV" and want to know where the people went. I used to like Sam Seder but he kept moving and I could never find a link. New DU'ers might appreciate being able to find links in one place. And this old time DU would appreciate that, too.

Why would someone need a helmet?

12. The "safe" aspect is one of the reasons for and protections included with the concept.

On the big boards, if a member posts a link, for example, to a tweet they heard about a breaking news item, a pile on often occurs.

If this or anything like it happens, a host will hide the thread. Repeat offenders will be blocked.

I think it will be OK.

4. I like this idea....count me in. Got a question....read on

As kind of an alternative way of considering this new forum, do we think there is a similarly media-focused place to discuss more tactics of fighting misinformation and the RW Noise Machine? What I mean (and not stating well) is that I think we all recognize the issues with misinformation and the heavily media-portrayed "false equivalence" - so I wonder if we need a tactical area to draft material we can submit to newspapers, media websites, etc - debunking falsehoods, putting pressure on to set the record more accurately...

Just thinking out loud - but it is more of a media-activist tinged thing I am looking for that would be useful...

thoughts? (this may warrant its own OP, so this shouldn't be considered a hi-jack of your plans!)

6. thanks - that does it in part, but isn't as active as it can/should be...and

I wonder if debunking is too passive - also needs to be some action oriented type of focus - preemptive strikes, so to speak, to me anyway...it is a huge issue, as we all know.

thanks again!

13. I think that the "media activist" utility could be integrated in the group.

But not to compete with the current activism groups.

We discussed whether it would be placed in the Media or on the Activism list of groups and lean toward Media because that way it would be less likely to be confused with the current "Media" group, which is there to discuss "the media" as opposed to offering alternative content providing models and less-known sources.

Thanks for the thoughts, we want to keep it dynamic and organic and incorporate others' ideas.

7. I would like to see such media get more exposure

However I am concerned that creating a private little corner on DU for it might have the unintended consequence of moving some of it off the main, and widely read, forums. There are already at least three groups here for which that is their primary purpose, i.e. sequestering discussion on those topics into their own small walled gardens. I would like to see these resources become more widely read, not less, and for me that means placing them directly alongside articles from AP, CNN, etc. whenever possible.

and I post links to Naked Capitalism, The Real News Network and RT frequently in GD.

Walled garden, as you put it, is the term I have in mind for all Apple products, by the way. Yes, it's a garden to play in. But WHAT you can and can't do is carefully managed, and to me it feels like you have no choice, no freedom.

16. Why couldn't you still post articles from those sites

out in the Main Forums, though? I think what's proposed is a New Media Resource Group and shouldn't prevent anyone who signed up from posting articles outside the group. Or, even posting the articles in the group and out in one of the main Forums like "GD or Good Reads" at the same time?

I seem to remember in ATA that Skinner gave an okay to CrossPosting.

15. Good input. I'd say that there's nothing to prevent cross-posting to the main forums....

...to keep it out there.

Stories can be posted in both the "walled garden" and the big boards for visibility.

The advantages of the "walled garden" is that it concentrates the topics and links and discussions that fit the SOP and that it's intended provide a safe haven from some of the harsh replies we sometimes see.

Crossposting can provide both safe discussion and wide distribution; one doesn't have to prevent the other.

44. I strongly recommend cross posting because some progressives may like the

rough and tumble of GD but should be encouraged to cross post in your new group.

I think it's a great idea. I would make it clear that bullying, ridicule and mocking will lead to banning. In GD the bully posse get free reign to disrupt decent threads.

45. Correct. Thank you.

There's a purpose and need, I think, for a new group that gathers resources that don't fit the other niche groups but there's also the need for a place to post links to sites that aren't mainstream and that sometimes attract scorn.

In addition to providing a repository focused resource point, many don't care to engage in challenges when they post on a discussion board.

This group would be a safe haven from such discord, but also be a choice for subscription for those who don't care for Huffington Post as a source, for example.

Thanks!

We'll link your show in what we anticipate will be a big and growing list of sources kept in a pinned thread.

Except the we don't want crazytalk, there won't be a lot of limitations, provided that they project a generally progressive POV.

Some of the more well known sites that have been kicked around include RT, GNN, and RNN, but it would be a safe place to post useful twitter feeds and other social media, podcasts, streams and radio, links to local activist sites, maybe guerilla/pirate offshore sources.

It should be inclusive of different forms of outreach.

And I, for one, sometimes don't care to sort through dozens of Huffington Post based articles and the rest of the filler that we see in GD, though sometimes I do like the filler and seeing what's going on more broadly.

I like the idea of knowing where to go to find, and to post, stories and sources that are more independent and unfiltered, and that might be emerging forms of dialogue and activism, provided they aren't BS, CT, or anti-progressive.

49. Clarification of the group SOP having heard from Skinner in ATA:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1259&pid=3787

Skinner wondered: "So, you want a group where people can't question the quality of sources?"

To which I replied:

"Dodgy" sources is kind of subjective, plenty of MSM articles use dodgy sources, that's almost why there's a roll to be played by less well known sources.

If you're going to equate "emerging" and "alternative" and "less well known" descriptors with "dodgy", then it's going to be pretty hard to advocate for creating a place for these stories and sources.

The BOG, mens' and womens' group, guns and anti-guns, and other groups have protections for good reason-- to give people a place to post without fear of condemnation and drama.

The intent of the proposed group is by no means primarily to escape the drama, but that is as desirable here as it is for the groups above because you can't plant seeds if people are pissing on them all the time.

The purpose is to post and promote new emerging progressive sources and modes of delivery.

The antithesis of these are what we have now: blogs, cable, news recyclers like Drudge and Huffington Post, Yahoo News, etc., delivered through standard ISPs, cable, or broadband.

DU can be part of helping nurture these emerging challengers or we can just let them die or thrive on their own while the rest of the media becomes more concentrated.

In addition to the emerging sources using conventional modes that could use a boost (as described above), there are new modes of delivery that don't have a home on DU, including Satellite and other radio, social media, broadcast, AppleTV-Roku, etc.

How about a home for the emerging technologies and using them to get news and as a tool for activism?

Promotion of new competitors to the MSM is more at the heart of this idea than anything.

Thanks for the support in any event!
