Nightmare in Maryville: Teens’ sexual encounter ignites a firestorm against family

There wasn’t much left by the time she arrived, just a burnt-out structure and the haze of smoke that lingered around it.

The siding and gutters had melted. The roof was gone. Inside, piles of ash filled the rooms that had once bustled with the pleasant sounds of a family.

That morning last April when Melinda Coleman received word that emergency vehicles were gathering around her Maryville house, she had hoped for the best.

But if the events of the past year and a half had taught her anything, it was that when the town of Maryville was involved, that seemed unlikely.

Since the morning her daughter had been left nearly unconscious in the frost of the home’s front lawn, this northwest Missouri community had come to mean little besides heartache.

Few dispute the basic facts of what happened in the early morning hours of Jan. 8, 2012: A high school senior had sex with Coleman’s 14-year-old daughter, another boy did the same with her daughter’s 13-year-old friend, and a third student video-recorded one of the bedding scenes. Interviews and evidence initially supported the felony and misdemeanor charges that followed.

Yet, two months later, the Nodaway County prosecutor dropped the felony cases against the youths, one the grandson of a longtime area political figure.

doesn't make the article's writers look any smarter / moral either. Sickening. Can't believe I share a planet with people who euphemize such things, in fact revel in it. We really, really need to send some people (the bad ones!) to Mars, and soon.

12. They didn't "have sex"; they were RAPED

Why the hell can't the reporters get that straight?

No wonder people don't go to the police when they are raped, because the police don't help. In this case, they initially did the right thing, then bowed to pressure from somewhere to drop the charged.

The family was subjected to a campaign of harassment and intimidation.

This case embodies all that is wrong with small town.

"Small-town" American is an oppressive, unAmerican place, where influence rules and everyone is is everyone else's business.
Small-town people are the most hateful, the most bigoted, the most unenlightened people in this country. Small-town values are not values I admire in the least.

72. We have an elected D.A. that refuses to prosecute a serial sexual offender.

For sexual assault. Because she's busy protecting the good old boys.

If a victim acts like a typical victim, she(yes, she's an elected District Attorney) won't bring it before a grand jury.

http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/mt_mtenforcement.shtm
Scroll down to "John Phillips, Massage Therapist, MT002614"

He voluntarily surrendered his license but that just means he can still sexually assault women, he just can't charge them money for it and call it a "massage".

It's good that this case is getting publicity. Hopefully the appropriate charges will be filed and, if convicted, sentenced to some serious jail time. I can't believe that sex with a 14 year old isn't a crime in general, much less one that's passed out and then to be left outside like that. Yeah, there's not much that qualifies as human presuming the facts are as stated.

And whatever scumbag burned the victim's family's house deserves a significant stint behind bars as well.

20. At this point, I'd give up on the criminal justice system and pursue civil remedies.

The local DA won't prosecute, the state has concluded (per the linked article) that it doesn't have jurisdiction to review the DA's decision, and I really doubt that there's any federal crime involved -- at least not one that the U.S. Attorney would decide to prosecute.

It stinks, but I don't see any chance that any of these guys will be held criminally accountable.

Instead, the two victims and their families should pursue a civil suit. Advantages are: (1) Bringing the suit doesn't require the approval of the local authorities, who are covering up for the locals against the outsiders; and (2) The standard of proof is lower (preponderance of the evidence instead of beyond a reasonable doubt). In light of all the publicity, they should also get the case out of Maryville. I don't know Missouri venue rules, but there's a good chance they can bring the suit where they now live.

I'm amazed this is only now getting exposure?? The victim's family home was BURNT DOWN??? A raped LITTLE GIRL and her family??

Is this a rural kkkristian town? Of course it is.... if the rural town I used to live in is anything similar, I'd guess at least 5 churches, at least one of them a mega-church, at least 5 bars and a good-old-boy repuke county legislature made up of the biggest CON-servative crooks in town. (My town, they got their stimulus $$$$ and used it to build a super-great town hall. These jackasses who made a little boy's secret club of the barber shop did nothing with that money for the falling apart town.)

70. Read the comments on the University's FB page

https://www.facebook.com/UCentralMO

It's getting uglier; this crap has got to stop

73. Which "crap"? The house burning down part? Or the mom fired for no reason crap?

Or the family getting run out of town? Or the prosecutor mysteriously deciding to NOT take this case to trial?

Or the Facebook page of a university getting some verbal spanking? Or Barnett, who has admitted he did this!, getting publicly shamed since our justice system has broken down here?

Exactly which "crap" needs to stop?
