NRA sponsored elephant hunting show

Just when you think the reprehensible organization that is the NRA couldn't get any lower, it sponsors a program on killing elephants. Thank goodness NBC Sports canceled it. But what possessed them in the first place?

NBC Sports Network Cancels NRA-Sponsored Elephant Hunting Show

NBC Sports Network is dumping the show that featured a guy shooting an elephant in the face. The show—hosted by NRA lobbyist Tony Makris—isn't being canceled for that episode with the elephant shooting, exactly (though that didn't help). Instead it's because Makris compared his critics to Hitler earlier this week. He said of his supposed critics: "And now they're shocked. And they said but they're so big and special and they're smarter. And I went, you know, Hitler would have said the same thing." That didn't go over well.

Only it turns out it had nothing to do with the horror of killing the magnificent elephant but that the host decided anyone who opposed killing elephants was just like Hitler.

NBC Sports' official statement:
Under Wild Skies will no longer air on NBC Sports Sports Network due to the program's close association with its host, whose recent comments comparing his critics to Hitler are outrageous and unacceptable. NBCSN will continue to air all of our other quality outdoor programming.

NBC Sports Network was forced to respond to a flurry of criticism this week, after the internet caught wind of a show that depicts safari hunting for big game in Africa.

On Sunday, an episode of the National Rifle Association-sponsored "Under Wild Skies" aired, showing NRA lobbyist and host Tony Makris shooting and killing an elephant, and then celebrating over champagne. The spectacle sparked vocal backlash, with criticism on social media and a petition at Causes.com that has since received more than 50,000 signatures.

In a statement released to the Los Angeles Times on Thursday, NBC Sports noted the legality of the hunt, but said it would take into account the sensitive nature of the content.

"We've listened to our viewers and will not air that particular episode of 'Under Wild Skies' again. We're also taking a close look at our internal standards as part of this process because this content should not have aired," the network said. "While this form of hunting is legal, we understand that many viewers find it objectionable. As a result we are taking an aggressive approach towards objectionable content within future episodes of 'Under Wild Skies' and other series."

Is there any doubt left that the NRA is the single greatest evil on the planet?

1. Anyone else sense the irony in this,

where the NRA (a group overwhelmingly comprised of Republicans) sponsored an elephant hunting show?

2. The whole "canned hunt" thing is so creepy

I grant the economic argument: allowing hunters to cull the older herd members at $50K per pays for the upkeep for the herd. There's just got to be a better way.

Also: I grew up hunting. Hunting for trophies is not real hunting. I hunted deer and rabbits for their meat, organs, and pelts, and donated all the meat I didn't use to a food bank. Hunting a large endangered creature just to say you did is not OK. Responsible hunters do not support this.

5. This is totally different from hunting deer, duck, and other game for food

It's barbarism. Elephants are endangered and also extremely intelligent. In the cases of females, they are deeply tied to their herds. They suffer greatly from loss and mourn their dead. While I put nothing past the NRA, I can't imagine how NBC imagined this would be in any way acceptable.

and you blame it on the fact it took place in Africa? The barbarian is the NRA sociopath and those who defend him.

Like the continent itself made him a sociopath? No, that guy is a committed piece of garbage. That whole organization is.

That title has to go to the unprosecuted fraudsters that destroyed the world economy and caused vulnerable people to lose their homes. Of course, they are allies of the evil NRA.

than all of the wars in US history far surpasses fraud and financial crimes. It's not even close.

15. The NRA does not typically support hunting amendments.

The Safari Club International is the pro-hunting lobby. NRA does very little pro hunting.

23. Those are two separate statements

He wasn't hunting for food, as is obvious if you had read about this hunt. The fact that the meat was donated is a sidenote, followed up by:

"I do not approve of trophy hunts for magnificent animals like these."

Maybe a little critical thinking on your part and a little less blind hatred of anything guns might be warranted.

You? Hardly. The NRA, yes, but there is nothing blind about it. If you'd bothered to read the rest of the thread, I give my comments on hunting above.

If you don't mean to excuse the NRA creep, you should be more careful about what you write.

30. What you consider "making a fool of myself"

was quoting back your own post to you. They were your words. That you are unable to communicate clearly is entirely your own doing.

This thread had long since fallen from the GD feed. You decided to dig it up just to pick a fight. Have a bad day, hunt up an old thread to take it out on someone who has the audacity not to enjoy practicing to kill people in their spare time. Somehow you'll just have to cope with the horror that some people on the planet don't worship guns and the fat NRA corporate lobbyists who profit from 32,000 deaths a year. So next time your friends down under point you to a thread, spare me your poutrage. You're making yourself too obvious.

32. I didn't asked for your support

You chose to dig up an old thread. Why don't you tell people how you happened to find it?

The juxtaposition between hunting for food and trophy hunting was made by Recursion earlier in this thread. Your post could reasonably be interpreted as saying hunting for elephants is okay if used as food. What most people do if their words are misinterpreted is to clarify their intent rather than pick a fight. You, however, aren't interested in communicating about the NRA's sponsorship of elephant killing. You have showed quite clearly what your purpose in this thread.
