A good man died this week & he chose love, not hate.

LA Weekly
By Simone WilsonMon., Feb. 27 2012 at 12:30 PM

Though Occupy L.A. has always been firm about its status as a collective, not a group of individuals, some protesters have inevitably achieved more celebrity than the rest.

The first and foremost being Sarah Mason, whose portrait at a Bank of America occupation ended up on the cover of TIME's "Protester of the Year" issue. (Albeit heavily manipulated by controversial street artist/graphic designer Shepard Fairey.)

Another local celebrity of sorts was 22-year-old Alex Weinschenker...

... who ran the "Print Shop," a staple of the Occupy L.A. encampment. Day in and day out, Weinschenker stenciled and printed Los Angeles' iconic "99%" bandanas -- one of which covered the bottom half of Mason's face for TIME.

We love you Alex & hope you have found peace. Thank you for giving of yourself to me & many others. You will be missed but not forgotten.

4. Alex was a kind individual whom I talked with at Soldiarity Park (OLA's encampment)

He was a really talented artist. Sadly he left behind a 6-month old son River who will only hear of his dad's gift to our cause.

I only talked with him once, but he left an impression on me. I remember because he made a shirt for my mom so she could wear it to an Occupy event in her small Washington town. He thought it was cool that I asked for a shirt for my mom & not myself.

I could speculate, but that wouldn't help.

8. Because I like to talk of how he lived, not how he died.

They have the link for the details.

I have lost many close friends to addiction and the tears that I saw at the GA the day after his death were real to me.

I cannot go there to get "clicks"..sorry.

His passing hit me unexpectedly hard.

I only spoke with him once, but for some reason I felt a loss.

It's funny how we touch each other's lives.

11. Sorry - I merely meant that

it would get more people to read about him by clicking on the link.

Addiction is a horrible disease (and it is a disease and should be treated like one, medically).

I didn't know of Alex as an addict, I knew him as an artist who gave his talents to Occupy LA.

Using a hooky title like "popular Occupy LA artist dies of overdose...leves behind young child" would get more attention. I just don't think that is the way he would've wanted to be known.

Editing, because it's ripe for misunderstanding.
