Controversy surrounds Mitt Romney's newest grandson's name

Mitt didn’t actually say which once of his children adopted the boy, but he did tweet a picture of the baby being held by Andelynne Romney, the wife of his son Ben Romney.

There seems to be an interesting bit of irony with the boy’s name. The name they picked for the dark-skinned young boy, Kieran comes from the Gaelic name which literally means “black.”

Little Kieran Romney also aseemed to confuse his grandfather a bit. In sending out the tweet announcing his birth, Mitt proudly stated that Kieran is his 22nd grandchild.

The problem is that Mitt said the same thing for his last grandchild. Romney’s son Josh and his wife Jen gave birth to a little boy this summer — born the same day as royal baby Prince George — prompting Mitt to send a proud tweet welcoming grandchild “#22?.

Kieran is a popular Irish name, hell it was one of the names I seriously considered for my own son 22 years ago. Most people don't know what it means and I don't think they'd really care, nor should they. The important thing is that a needy child was adopted by a loving family. It's not as if they named him "Adolf Hitler" or some such shit, either. Sometimes the left can be as bad as the right in stirring up stupid "controversies" that are anything but, and seeing problems where there are none.

I also considered the name "Cameron", as I loved it, until I saw from a book of baby names that it actually meant "crooked nose" in Gaelic. Um, no thanks, lol. I wonder how many people named Cameron actually know that or would really care?

And as far as the confusion over the number of grandchildren-that's pretty typical for a lot of older men, too, I don't see any issue there, either. My grandfather only had 13 grandchildren altogether and he never could quite remember the number, lol.

A kid costs a lot more to raise probably that what you get to write off in taxes. Especially at Rmoney level.

Though I can see the optics if Ben runs for President someday, like McCain, who had adopted a daughter.

But then the odds of that are not great enough to be worth it. So even though it's an Rmoney I think they likely really did just want to adopt the kid.

Bush Defends 'Little Brown Ones' Term for Grandchildren, Tells 'Pride and Love'
August 17, 1988|Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS — A bristling Vice President George Bush today defended his description of his three Mexican-American grandchildren as "the little brown ones," saying, "This heart knows nothing but pride and love" for the children.

"For anyone to suggest that that comment of pride is anything other than what it was, I find it personally offensive," Bush said at a news conference with his running mate, Sen. Dan Quayle of Indiana.

Bush on Tuesday introduced his grandchildren to President Reagan at a brief airport meeting.

"These are Jebby's kids from Florida, the little brown ones,"
the vice president said. The three youngsters are the children of Bush's son, Jeb, and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.

"Those grandchildren are my pride and joy, and when I say pride, I mean it," Bush said today.

Besides, it's just a name now, void of whatever meaning it may have once had in a tongue nobody in this culture speaks. My own name means "healer", but my mom didn't know that when she named me -- she just liked the sound of Jason as a boy's name. Any ancient Greek connotations can be safely ignored.

Even knowing what it means, Kieran is a good name. The name actually represents something about the kid rather than just picking a random name that sounded good. It's a credit to them that they're adopting rather than having more children.
