My Name Is Jason, I’m A 35-Yr-Old White Male Combat Veteran…And I’m On Food Stamps

--snip--

My name is Jason. I turned 35 less than a week ago. My first job was maintenance work at a public pool when I was 17. I worked 40-hours a week while I was in college. I’ve never gone longer than six months without employment in my life and I just spent the last three years in the military, one of which consisted of a combat tour of Afghanistan.

Oh, and I’m now on food stamps. Since June, as a matter of fact.

Why am I on food stamps?

The same reason everyone on food stamps is on food stamps: because I would very much enjoy not starving.

I mean, if that’s okay with you:

…Mr. or Mrs. Republican congressman.

…Mr. or Mrs. Conservative commentator.

…Mr. or Mrs. “welfare queen” letter-to-the-editor author.

…Mr. or Mrs. “fiscal conservative, reason-based” libertarian.

I do apologize for burdening you on the checkout line with real-life images of American-style poverty. I know you probably believe the only true starving people in the world have flies buzzing around their eyes while they wallow away, near-lifeless in gutters.

Hate to burst the bubble, but those people don’t live in this country.

I do. And millions like me. Millions of people in poverty who fall into three categories.

Let’s call them the “lucky” category, since conservatives seem to think people on welfare have hit some sort of jackpot:

Those living paycheck to paycheck? They’re a little lucky.

Those living unemployment check to unemployment check? They’re a little luckier.

Those living 2nd of the month to 2nd of the month? *ding* We’ve hit the jackpot!

The 2nd of the month being the time when funds gets electronically deposited onto the EBT card, for those who’ve never been fortunate enough to hit that $175/month Powerball.

I fall into the latter two categories. But I’ve known people recently - soldiers in the Army – who were in the first and third. They were off fighting in Afghanistan while their wives were at home, buying food at the on-post commissary with food stamps.

And nobody bats an eye there, because it’s not uncommon in the military.

It’s not uncommon – nor is it shameful. It might be shameful how little service-members are paid, but that’s a separate issue.

The fact remains anyone at a certain income level can find it difficult from time to time to pay for everything. And when you’re poor you learn to make sacrifices. Food shouldn’t be one of them.

The whole concept is un-American. People living here, in the greatest country on Earth, with the most abundant resources, should be forced to go hungry because of the intellectual notion of fiscal conservatism and the ideological notion of self-reliance.

Are you fucking kidding me?

I didn’t risk my life in Afghanistan so I could come back and watch people go hungry in America. I certainly didn’t risk it so *I* could come back and go hungry.

3. I am sorry Jason. In my opinion, Conservatives have become shameful.

The Veterans Job Bill was defeated by Conservatives as the last planeloads of soldiers from Afghanistan were arriving at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. I was watching a noon news report on ABC Dallas-Fort Worth give a story with video. I waited for the REST of the story, how Texas Senators Cornyn and Hutchinson voted against the Veteran's Job Bill. The story was not given, so I emailed the TV station. They were too cowardly to reply back, or contact me.

6. Nobody, even the Republicans, expect this to become law.

They can vote any crazy law at all to please the teapeople but everyone knows it would never pass the Senate and President.

If it had a chance of actually being made law I'll bet it wouldn't have passed the House because a lot of semi-sane Republicans would have voted against it.

Obama has said he will veto the budget if the massive cuts in this program are voted through. The GOP wants to destroy ALL social programs, furlough all workers and bankrupt the country.

People had better put their congress critturs on notice this will not go unpunished. As Obama said, why does anyone vote for unnecessary suffering?

They would break the budget so they can nullify health care, make people so desperate they will give up rights to fair treatment and work for room and board, in the so-called name of freedom and liberty?

Obviously, the libertarian vision of freedom and liberty is only for the wealthy few.

10. I know some that would say...

Why would you ever leave the military while the country is in such terrible economic shape. A bad economy (blamed on Obama), no jobs for the foreseeable future, millions leaving the workforce and not being counted on the unemployment roles so the 7 percent number doesn't sound so terrible when it fact it is near 15 percent unemployment, if you count all those that have left the workforce.
So you got out of the military and now you will fester until a republican president gets elected, ends Obamacare, cuts taxes for the rich and creates millions of jobs...

Why don't you go back in the miliatry and earn your keep... instead of sucking off of taxpayers..?

That's what I work with, retired military contractors...

Guess what's the cheapest way to buy telephone service? A cell phone. Landlines cost more than the cheapest cell phone options.

People complaining about the poor having cell phones are still living in the world where they got a cell phone as a luxury 20+ years ago and assume it's still a luxury.

During one of my father's tours in Viet Nam, mom and us boys lived in Lehigh Acres Fla. near her parents. We would travel the width of Fla twice a month to shop at the Homestead AFB commissary. I remember her dieting regularly even though she was not fat. I never thought about it until I watched the married guys on the ship scrimp and save to keep their families fed.
I never asked, being scared of her possible answer.

25. As I understand it

todays commissaries are more expensive (no taxes though) than average supermarkets.
The quality seems to be much better as does the selection of goods...
When I was young (Army Brat) the commissaries were much less expensive.
With the current profiteering by govt. contractors, greed is the motivating factor.
When our military provided it's own food (purchased through a bidding process), cooked the meals for it's members, built their own buildings, etc.. costs were much more equitable.
Military contracting (cost plus) has made many profiteers very wealthy.

In their services they tend to sub-contract, very many times, each "sub" making a very good profit without doing anything but finding a cheaper sub-contractor.
The original contractors usually realize much more profit.
They sub-contract each contract (usually about a half dozen times) and the company that actually provides the service is motivated to hire unskilled labor, pay them shit, the work is unsafe, but they can at least, realize some profits (compared to the contractor) by employing the Wal-Mart type of workers.
When they contracted and employed Union workers (who earned a living wage and are very well trained), they could still make a profit (not as huge) but they had quality services at a lower price to taxpayers. The workers spent money in the economy also.
It has been a race to the bottom in the govt. contracted building and services scam.
I have watched this over the decades and it is a scale model of how our economy has deteriorated.
Yet the wealthy have gotten wealthier and the people, much more poor.
Much like the way we were taught that the USSR ran it's economy.

Their goal is to sell items at cost plus 5%.

You are supposed to tip the baggers, but they do an awesome job. The LINE to the registers moves quickly. I wish all stores would implement this system.

Hope this guy has started his VA application for disabled vet pension. And he can also use his 911 GI bill and go to school while drawing a stipend of at least 1400 a month. All tuition and books are covered.

has a history of shamefully treating it's soldiers and veterans of wars and 'conflicts' in which they had prosecuted at the behest of 'knowledgeable' leaders. Treated both shamefully and with disrespect. Recently from Rumsfeld sending thousands of troops into harms way WITHOUT proper equipment to that goddamn shrub 'flying' onto the "mission accomplished" flight deck attired in that goddamn leather flying jacket to using depleted uranium in munitions without telling troops we have been treating our soldiers like so much chattel to be treated with disdain and dishonor. The fact that this vet has to write something like this is the end for me. America, you stink! American leaders, you stink. American people don't let this despicable treatment of our vets continue. People at this age should be eligible for social security and medicare. This would thin out the workforce so that the number of people seeking jobs is less and therefore it should make it easier for these younger folks to find employment. I believe this would save us money in the long run because fewer people needing resources (assuming the jobs they find aren't minimum wage ones that is). How would we pay for the extra people on social security, you ask? we could always raise the cap collecting from more than just the first $110,000 (is that what the amount is?) but we wouldn't want those making more to have to pay on more. 52. 20 close friends of daughter graduated in June

from Univ of Washington...pretty good University.
Actually it is ranked 27th best in the entire world.

Not one of them have found a job in their field of study.
Some are working as waitresses. My daughter signed up
on a project to teach English in Spain. She will get paid
a stipend, 750 euro's/month, barely enough to live on.

There are no jobs in US! Economy sucks!

63. It is a disgrace that we aren't paying people in the military enough to live on

We need to be paying our soldiers more instead of making them rely on public assistance.
