5. Chuck Todd: Pointing out Republican lies isn't his job
Wed Sep 18, 2013, 08:24 PM
Sep 2013
MSNBC host Chuck Todd said Wednesday that when it comes to misinformation about the new federal health care law, don't expect members of the media to correct the record.

During a segment on "Morning Joe," former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) speculated that most opponents of the Affordable Care Act have been fed erroneous information about the law. Todd said that Republicans "have successfully messaged against it" but he disagrees with those who argue that the media should educate the public on the law. According to Todd, that's President Barack Obama's job.

"But more importantly, it would be stuff that Republicans have successfully messaged against it," Todd told Rendell. "They don't repeat the other stuff because they haven't even heard the Democratic message. What I always love is people say, 'Well, it's you folks' fault in the media.' No, it's the President of the United States' fault for not selling it."

It's apparently only the media's job to give a bully pulpit to Republican lies.

But, hey, that's not Chuck's fault. It's not his job to, you know, report on things and explain them and clear up misinformation. Because that means research, sifting through facts, figuring out which ones are real and which ones are made up. You know, work.

Chucky said this. He all but blew his cover as an "objective" journalist with this comment. He may as well quit pretending to be neutral with his "both sides..." act, and just go full-on Republican and perhaps find a gig across the street. Face it--he is about as competent at reporting as Tom Tucker from Family Guy.

He calls these GOP ACA lies "successful messaging." He in essence labeled ithem true, mere "messages." This is worse than reporting the lies. Now he is defending the lies. See post #5 above.

35. Todd forgets that journalism should comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable:
Thu Sep 19, 2013, 03:07 PM
Sep 2013
As a journalist in the age of "muckraking journalism", Dunne was aware of the power of institutions, including his own. Writing as Dooley, Dunne once wrote the following passage cautioning against the power of the newspapers themselves:

"Th newspaper does ivrything f'r us. It runs th' polis foorce an' th' banks, commands th' milishy, controls th' ligislachure, baptizes th' young, marries th' foolish, comforts th' afflicted, afflicts th' comfortable, buries th' dead an' roasts thim aftherward".

The expression has been borrowed and altered in many ways over the years:

Clare Booth Luce employed a variation of it in a tribute to Eleanor Roosevelt, "Mrs. Roosevelt has done more good deeds on a bigger scale for a longer time than any woman who ever appeared on the public scene. No woman has ever so comforted the distressed — or so distressed the comfortable."[11]

Several religious leaders (including one Archbishop of Canterbury) have called it the goal of religion.[citation needed]

Social activist "Mother" Mary Jones was once quoted as saying "My business is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."[citation needed]

A version showed up in a line delivered by Gene Kelly in the 1960 film, Inherit the Wind. Kelly (E.K. Hornbeck) says, "Mr. Brady, it is the duty of a newspaper to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable".

That's what they think their job is.

Frankly, it's only going to get worse. I have seen the kind of shit real journalists get, even here on DU. I have seen many posts slamming the likes of Palast, Tiabbi, and Greenwald for reporting the facts.

Idiocrasy was not supposed to be a documentary.
