But it's another running around insisting that the White House has been taken over by aliens and we are going to bomb Syria and Iran, eliminate Social Security, put Summers in charge, and let the Bush Tax cuts remain in place forever while they spy on you when you're naked and taking a shower talking on your cell phone...

(45,319 posts)It includes an interactive feature. For example, my Senator sits on the committee that would be the first hurdle for Summers as nominee. He and three other Democrats were the first to say 'thanks but no thanks' to the Larry Summers trial balloon.
So the upshot is that I already knew the committee members were going to announce a lack of support while here on DU, a certain segment of posters was wailing that to oppose Summers amounted to 'abject hatred'.
Representative democracy. Try it sometime.

(128,702 posts)Here we go. DU rides off in the sunset again having saved the world.
Guaranteed that after Summers left the administration the first time - he wasn't coming back. Especially with the Democratic Party focusing on the GOP's "War on Women", where Summers is a poster boy for such. Throwing his name out there only put the exclamation point on his very public execution. It certainly got Summers out of his bubble-world. It's the Chicago way as they like to say.
I expect Bill Clinton ain't gonna be a happy camper.

(45,012 posts)to Citi on hold, that's how bad the douchenozzle wanted the position at the FED, and Obama did have him on the list for the FED. I suspect Obama gave Summers a face save and told him forget about it, I'm not picking you so you need to withdraw.
DU does NOT ride off in the sunset again having saved the world. DU didn't save the world, but some of us made our voices fucking heard. I'll tell you what though, DU is a great place to get information on petitions and phone numbers to call.
BumRushDaShow
(128,702 posts)from being THE "nominee".
Whenever these sorts of positions are up, a LIST is generated of "qualified" candidates and then the vetting goes on.
Yet DU had already decided who was selected and had declared that the selection had been slam-dunk confirmed. This was done with such vitriol that any reasonable discussion about opposing even his name as a consideration, was lost under the certainty that it was already a done deal so why waste the time.

(36,745 posts)It is between Mr. Geithner and Ms. Yellen.
Mr. Geithner is a close confidant of the President and was president of the NY FRB for 6 years.
I suspect he will be the nominee and someone who I suspect Ms. Yellen will respect if he is put into the position. They were FRB presidents at nearly the same time, Geithner for NY and Yellen for SF.

(21,115 posts)Did I miss Obama saying he was now the ONLY candidate?
WilliamPitt
(58,179 posts)But if the bar for each appointment is that the economic team already likes the candidate and knows he or she is good at the job and will work well with the other members of the team, then the only people who will clear the bar are people the economic team has already worked with. And because all the members of the team have similar backgrounds that brought them in contact with many of the same people, the same people get chosen again and again.
Theres a real element of merit in this, in the sense that it wouldnt work if Obama didnt genuinely think his economic team was doing a superlative job. So long as he is pleased with the job theyre doing, the path dependence is almost unbreakable.
This basic model fits every major economic appointment Obama has made since taking office. It explains why the president has named only one person who wasnt in the administration in 2009 to a top economic position -- Burwell, who served with (and impressed) every other member of Obamas economic team in the Clinton administration. And it explains why Obama strongly favors an inside candidate such as Summers for the most important economic appointment of all.

(13,877 posts)balloon" and gives time for response...and acts accordingly. Somebody called Summers up and had a talk, to be sure, just like somebody called Assad and had a talk. That it was the true will of the majority, via polls and other media, makes it all the better.
We won a two-fer...made a difference. That's what sways politicians...and if that continues, the next candidate will listen even more. And, it might even begin to shift who would be willing to stick out their political neck and run for offices other than the more obvious. And it might continue the political shift to the left.
Think positive.
