Communists: 'Ok, if McCain fits our Syria line'

The news stirred a bit of controversy in the Russian media since it was not immediately clear which Pravda newspaper McCain was going to write for – the post-Soviet edition of Pravda newspaper or the on-line news outlet Pravda.ru that The Cable actually contacted.

Back in the Soviet times there was only one newspaper called Pravda (or ‘The Truth’), which was established in 1912. After the 1917 Bolshevik revolution and until the collapse of the USSR it remained the country’s most influential daily.

Since the mid 1990s, the successor of that Pravda has belonged to the Russian Communist Party (the KPRF). The Pravda, published in Russian, is the official organ of the party and is led by Communist MP Boris Komotsky.

...

Gennady Zyuganov, the leader of the KPRF, said that if the newspaper does get a proposal from McCain “we will be ready to consider it, but only if his opinion does not contradict the Communist Party’s position on the war in Syria,” the party’s website quotes.

...

“The US is attempting to eliminate our last ally in the Middle East – Syria. And McCain is one of the most predatory hawks urging direct aggression ," the Communist leader believes.

8. McCain's staff apparently contacted pravda.ru, a website unrelated to the Communist newspaper

http://english.pravda.ru/

Pravda.ru is a Russian online tabloid not ashamed to feature woo, denialism, and various conspiracy theories. It also covers "normal" news, but often with a heavy Russian nationalist slant. Pravda means "truth" in Russian, something you probably won't get by surfing on it. Pravda.ru is not to be confused with Pravda, the former Soviet Communist newspaper, which is currently a Russian-language newspaper owned by the Communist Party of Russian Federation. The name (and a few former collaborators, apparently) is the sole link with that newspaper.

9. obviously he mentioned Pravda because it was an important paper....FIFTY YEARS AGO

it was probably just a stereotypical thought for him--some association he picked up long ago and never bothered to 'update', as it were. This just demonstrates the crude stupidity of even the most important American politicians(*) and how they know nothing about what they are so furiously, if reflexively, raving against.

(*)--I hesitated to say 'senior politicians' because of an unfortunate connotation, even if it is low-hanging fruit for a joke. Not looking to bash senior citizens with that line, just credulous nitwits who think they're large and in charge. Grandpa McCain just happens to be old enough to remember the time when Stalin ran the paper, so the association apparently stuck.
