General Motors Just Bought 7 Percent Of Peugeot To Share Car Platforms

The rumored partnership between General Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroen is coming to fruition.

There are two major components to this partnership: GM and PSA will share vehicle platforms for small and midsize cars. They will also combine purchasing functions to ease the sourcing of commodities, components, and other aspects of the joint businesses.

But that is just the beginning. The companies are now looking for other ways to combine efforts.

PSA will be raising around $1 billion in new capital with GM's 7 percent purchase. GM will also become the second largest shareholder in the company, just behind the Peugeot family.

For GM's small car efforts in Europe, this can be mixed news. While the Citroen's new DS line of cars have been received with open arms, many Peugeot models are panned for poor build quality.

Pretty much like this one:

It rode like a cloud, had seats like a lounge and the durability of toilet paper in a hurricane. The drive train was fine. The interior started to self destruct in less than a year. The upholstery trim, apart from the seats, was horrible.

There is an old saying about mergers -- "Tying together two bricks won't make them float".
