Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Will we ever want to have sex with robots ?

yes, the original headline.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-23637225

Meet Roxxxy the sex robot with a triple XXX. Depending on your view 'she' is either at the cutting edge of the human-robot interface, or a modern reflection on some men's difficulties in relating to real-life partners.

While sex aids are nothing new, what makes Roxxxy different is "we've taken artificial intelligence" and "combined it with a human form," says creator Douglas Hines.

Of course, humanoid robots have been the stuff of science fiction for decades - ever since Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis, or Isaac Asimov's I Robot stories.

The reality is somewhat more clunky.

that said things like "Let me open that jar for you" or "I'll mow your lawn any day of the week."

It's not the jerking off that's gross. It's using a clearly fake whole person programmed to say things people of your gender are stereotypically supposed to get off on that's nasty.

...however, I bet if the creepy pseudo-man actually DID mow the lawn.... you'd be interested. Wouldn'tcha! Wouldn'tcha!

edited to add: I'm adding "Creepy Pseudo-Man" to my list of awesome band names people have given me on DU. Thank you for that.

So she joined hands with the Republicrats to get rid of me.

Mine was a comment on Warren's remark to you about vibrators, as though that somehow equated with rape of an unconscious woman. Now why you think something about rape would go over MY head I can't imagine. I post more about violence against women than virtually anyone on this site.

31. Sorry, that "as though" seemed as if you were reading an awful lot into my 5 word post.

If I want to say something, I'll say it. What I'm saying here is, if people think it's "sick" to "have sex with a machine", well, let's be consistent.

Full disclosure, I find the robot a bit creepy. But then I find some vibrators creepy.

43. No, but my wife is neither a robot nor a vibrator.

If someone is having "sex" alone, (which would include "with" a robot) then they're technically masturbating.

I guess the question is, at what level of robot or machine development does the act turn from masturbation into "sex". If the vibrator, say, came attached to a cardboard cutout of ... shit, I dunno, Errol Flynn.. then would it stop being "masturbation" and become "sex"?

54. something which defines us humans

While no machine, however well-engineered, can ever feel empathy - something which defines us humans - it might be able to simulate it well enough to allow us to play along and treat it as if it were a sentient being.

There are plenty of "humans" which do not appear to have this trait.

66. That's not a bug -- it's a feature!

However, if you insist, they can disable the "mouthy" feature and give you a credit towards more... uh, "interesting"... options. Like maybe replacing the operating system with one that all but eliminates the dreaded "blue stare of death."

How do you do a "ctrl-alt-delete", I wonder?

61. Owners will also be able to select different personalities .., from "Wild Wendy" to "Frigid Farrah,"

"Sex only goes so far – then you want to be able to talk to the person," Hines said.

The phrases that were demonstrated were prerecorded, but the robot will also be able to synthesize phrases out of prerecorded words and sounds, Hines said. The laptop will receive updates over the Internet to expand the robot's capabilities and vocabulary. Since Hines is a soccer fan, it can already discuss Manchester United, he said. It snores, too.

Owners will also be able to select different personalities for Roxxxy, from "Wild Wendy" to "Frigid Farrah," Hines said. He's charging somewhere from $7,000 to $9,000 for the robot, including the laptop, and expects to start shipping in a few months.

Think working for a phone sex line is bad?

Imagine your 9-5 job was putting on a motion capture suit, telepresence goggles, and controlling a sex-bot on the other side of the world...

Not my cup of tea, but there enough "simulator" products out there to suggest that a robot would be warmly welcomed by a certain market.

72. This is something many think is very possible in the future

That if we have robots that have advanced artificial intelligence and they look like humans, that we may develop feelings and emotions for such machines.

Already look at how some guys fall in love with their car or the guns or whatever. People become attached to inanimate objects just as easily as living beings.

I watched the BBC documentary on "Real Dolls", and man. I came away freaked out by that. Just, eep. It was when I learned the true meaning of Uncanny Valley. I recall Robert Anton Wilson promoting the idea of Marilyn Monroe sex robots or something. He seemed to like the idea. It just makes me shudder.

88. I doubt that it will catch on

I have always wondered why aids for men to pleasure themselves haven't caught on, like the fleshlight. Seems like it can't be too hard to make a device to simulate sex, but most men don't seem interested in that. I have even wondered if there is a way to use virtual reality to simulate touch and accomplish the same thing. Seems better to me than blowing a bunch of money on beer at a bar and taking a chance of going home with someone that may not look as good the next morning. I think it will take a lot more technology to simulate the real thing. Besides, who wants sloppy seconds on a robot?

90. LOL

The correct answer is: Of course!

My husband says a couple of things, while sort of sad, are probably true:

1. When new technology becomes available, if it can be used for porn, it'll be wildly successful, and:
2. Men don't pay hookers for sex--they pay them to leave (not his original thought, IMS).

Last edited Tue Aug 27, 2013, 12:16 PM - Edit history (2)

The second episode of the new Outer Limits television series (1995-2002) was "Valerie 23." Said episode title refers to the newest version of a line of "female" automatons developed by a robotic engineer. The premises of the episode is that the engineer loans Valerie to his friend Frank as sort of a test to determine the limit of personal interaction which can be possible between humans and automatons. The summary of the episode is found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerie_23

From the Wikipedia link:

Over the course of the test, Valerie becomes increasingly affectionate and Frank eventually gives in. After the sexual encounter, Frank explains to Valerie that he thinks it was a mistake.

109. Of course. Practically everyone

assumes a robot relationship should be about sex. Depending on a person's ability for personal introspection and level of deprivation, such a relationship could just as easily be primarily about intellectual companionship.
