Howard Dean returning to Iowa

Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who says he's open to making another bid for president, will travel next week to Iowa, a move that will surely stoke further speculation that Dean may run in 2016.

The former presidential candidate will speak Wednesday at the Iowa Federation of Labor convention, taking him back to the same state where he finished third in the 2004 Iowa caucuses and made his infamous "Dean Scream."

A spokesman for Dean's independent group, Democracy for America, said Dean will be talking next week about the organization's "Purple to Blue Project," a plan aimed to help Democrats win state House and Senate seats.

While the project is focused on five races in Virginia this year, the group plans to expand to other states next year, including an effort to win the majority in Iowa's state House.

The group’s “Purple to Blue” campaign has focused on five races in Virginia this year, but will expand to other states in 2014.

“This isn’t the last you’ll be hearing of Dean and Democracy for America in Iowa leading up to 2016,” the aide said.

Senator Tom Harkin, Democrat of Iowa, who endorsed Mr. Dean’s campaign almost 10 years ago, encouraged him to speak at the labor convention, according to the aide. Next month, at his annual steak fry, Mr. Harkin will host another former — and possibly future — Democratic candidate, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

13. I freakin ADORE

Howard Dean. He was my guy in '04, and even though I liked Kerry, I always longed for Dean to run again. I thought he did a fabulous job as DNC Chair, and never understood why he wasn't left there, or at least given a cabinet post (hello?! Health and Human Services?! He would have been perfect.)

It would be great to have someone run to the left of Hillary.

15. I would love to see Dean or another progressive run. What I don't want to see is a

Clinton coronation. That would not be good for the party or the country. If Clinton ultimately becomes the nominee then so be it, but we need a debate within the party about the direction of this country. Clinton getting the nomination with only token opposition will not get us there.

31. It's too much to ask if you don't suggest such a person

Therein lies the problem. I can't think of anyone that fits your description that has anything like the stature of those 3. I like Warren, but her lack of experience is an issue. O'Malley I just don't know but a friend I trust says he doesn't have the personal presence to be a threat. I can't think of anyone that can win who I would prefer to Gore or Dean, age notwithstanding. Can you?

I am sure there are some young governors out there. I prefer governors over congress people anyway. That is why I liked Dean in 2004. So I can't give you a specific answer.

37. Supported Dean in '04.

Well aware he's not far left on many issues. But he's straightforward. You don't have to guess where he stands. And he'll call the Republicans on their bs. And he stood against the Iraq war before it was "safe" to do so. Don't agree with him on everything, but I trust his judgement even when I disagree. If he runs again, I'm so totally on board. My experience on the Dean campaign was incredible. And only part of that was the candidate. Much was the community we found- that knowledge that we weren't alone and weren't crazy (remember how rare that was in '03, '04?) I made lifelong friends. It was important and transformative- personally and politically. And ya know what? To this day, I still, often, find myself saying "Dean was right! *We* were right!"

50. I remember reading that here in 2004. It didn't work then, either.

Dean's a moderate; he'll tell you that, himself. Most of his supporters are progressives, like myself, and there are two reasons for that.

First, we'd like a moderate in office over a conservative Third-Wayer like Obama or Clinton.

Second, generally, we'd prefer to be told what we don't want to hear and have it be the truth then to have someone lie to our faces for votes.

It's never been about getting our pony, it's about having our voices heard and our opinions considered. Dean will do that, even if he doesn't always agree.

Dean respects the voters - all of them. He doesn't play one faction against another or call us the professional left. In return he gets our respect, even when he doesn't always lead where we'd like.

I like Dean. A lot.

3 years. omG, 3 years. I wonder which side will cycle through more frontrunners who haven't even announced yet in the next 2 years.

I wonder if any of us could even actually guess the names of who gets the nominations on either side. I mean... 3 years. Some of these potential candidates may not even be alive by the next election, just statistically. Others will get taken out with scandal. some will have quit politics for personal reasons, like lucrative private deals. etc.
