Why are Republicans such dicks?

To me, there are only a few basic reasons:

Greed.

Power.

Racism.

Zero empathy.

Anything to add?

1. I agree with your opinions. To me , the big question is, what caused them to be that way?

8. I believe that personal philosophies (values) evolve based on biology and experiences.

But, it could have taken Republican people thousands of years to turn into the unhealthy specimens that they are now. More like, however, is the group philosophical trends of the past couple of hundred years have led many to the ill-formed thoughts now manifested by most
Republicans, right-wingers and religious Dominionists.

14. In other words, they haven't evolved.

And thanks to "Faux News," hate radio and hate blogs, it seems that their chances of entering the modern world are slim to none.

16. I believe that it would be more accurate to say that they have evolved, but not in a way that

makes them well rounded, connecting, caring individuals. Evolution comes about due to responses
to circumstances. Something is making these people "sick". If the cause could be determined,
they might could be "re-programmed" over a long period of time.

21. The Republican Party of Lincoln's day

is not the Republican Party of today.

The South was almost 100% Democratic until LBJ signed the voting rights act and the civil rights act in the 1960s. The South then turned Republican and have been ever since.

32. I never said

The GOP of Lincoln's day is the GOP of today, did I? No straw man needed here I merely wanted to correct an incredibly incorrect post! And yes, I realize the south was Dem back then...I mean, I am the guy that introduced the historical correction, no?

It's hard to believe the GOP was once a high wage, high tariff, party of protectionism at one time but they were.

Government corruption, on the other hand, is not limited to any party.

40. I don't give much of a crap about most social issues

I'm working class. I think the Democratic Party should represent the working class. And actually so should the Republican Party.

Instead the working class is divided on social issues. And thus we have

Republicans - a socially conservative party that does NOT represent the working class
Democrats - a socially liberal party that does NOT represent the working class

A lot of dust is thrown up in the air about social issues - partly in order to hide the fact that both parties are screwing the working class, and partly because many people care deeply about social issues and it is easy to get them riled up.

Both parties should be representing the bottom 80% in order to win the support of that huge majority, and yet neither party is. The top 20% is where the funding is anyway, so they both think the bottom 80% can go hang. If they want the opinion of the bottom 80% they will sell it to them. (A variation of the old t-shirt showing a Godfather who says "If I want your opinion, I will tell it to you")

racism, the war on women, voting rights, immigration, the destruction of education, the push for a "Christian Nation," LGBT hatred, and so on? That's all "a lot of dust thrown up in the air"?

Okay, to each his/her own.

27. I disagree. The modern asshole Republican party was formed under Reagan.

In the 60s and 70s, Republicans supported Civil Rights and the ERA. Many Republicans were in supported Planned Parenthood.

It was Reagan that transformed the party into the ugly mess that it is today.

31. You're right for the most part. But let's

not forget Richard Nixon. He was a dick as Eisenhower's VP in the 50s and he was a dick during his own presidency in the 60s and 70s. He should have been impeached. Oh, wait.

And then there was Herbert Hoover back in the 20s who gave us the Great Depression.

But you're right that the total insanity of today's Republican Party began with Ronald Reagan. It's been downhill ever since and it's may take a century or more to repair the damage they've done.

9. Ignorance of any other way of life besides their own, fear that a self-proclaimed superiority

that benefitted them for hundreds of years is going away. They're no longer born on third base, and they are seeing that without that built-in advantage, they are not any better than the next guy, so their identities are all screwed up, and it pisses them off. They have lost an authority their fathers had and it makes them feel powerless. In one sense, they are right. Some of their rights ARE being taken away from them. But they were rights they never should have had to begin with. That's the men.

As for the women? I can't for the life of me understand why any woman would be a Republican. Possibly women who also have fears that they will be required to take responsibility for their own lives? Women who believe that they need the protection of a man in order to make it? Could all Republican women really believe the underlying message of their party that they are second class citizens who should not be allowed self-determination?

17. Dems are far from perfect

But virtually all the progress of the 20th century was brought about by the Democratic Party.

Some progress, (the interstate highway system), was brought about by a Republican (Eisenhower).

But for the past 40 years, the Republican Party has been an enemy of progress and plain human decency. Today, they are a clear and present danger to all of us.

18. They have a very strong "superiority complex"

They really believe with all their hearts they are better than everyone else and that only they have the right answers for our country. They are not any different than Hitler in that regard...In fact I bet if you were to truly analyze their ideology it would be almost identical with that of fascist Germany of 1939.

I'm not being flippant either. People who want to hate someone or a group be they African Americans, Women, Latinos, Seniors, Labor, GBLT, young people, Muslims, the Poor, etc. flock to the Republican party.

If you hate people, you have a home in the Republican party. You can express your hate freely and openly without any reprocussions. See Steve King this week alone.
