Obama Promises Disappear from Web

Obama Promises Disappear from Web
by John Wonderlich
July 25, 2013, 11:31 a.m.

Change.gov, the website created by the Obama transition team in 2008, has effectively disappeared sometime over the last month.

While front splash page for for Change.gov has linked to the main White House website for years, until recently, you could still continue on to see the materials and agenda laid out by the administration. This was a particularly helpful resource for those looking to compare Obama's performance in office against his vision for reform, laid out in detail on Change.gov.

According to the Internet Archive, the last time that content (beyond the splash page) was available was June 8th -- last month.

Why the change?

Here's one possibility, from the administration's ethics agenda:

Protect Whistleblowers: Often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government is an existing government employee committed to public integrity and willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism, which can sometimes save lives and often save taxpayer dollars, should be encouraged rather than stifled. We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance. Barack Obama will strengthen whistleblower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of authority in government. Obama will ensure that federal agencies expedite the process for reviewing whistleblower claims and whistleblowers have full access to courts and due process.

84. Prosecuted does not necessarily mean tried and convicted.

The US Attorney's office convened a Grand Jury and they were indicted - their homes were raided, they were arrested, booked, and their papers and computers seized. That's prosecuted. In 2010 the US Attorney issued them immunity in exchange for their testimony against reporters they had communicated with, and also investigated the reporters.

Prosecuted.

109. Yes, and they had their lives, careers and reputations ruined. There was no case against

Drake, he had done everything according to the rules, but they prosecuted him anyhow, knowing they most likely could not win a case against him, and after ruining his reputation, his career and his life, the night before the case was to begin, after nearly two years of persecution, the case was dropped.

And not once did they look into the crimes he revealed. Which is why we have another Whistle Blower, and there will be more, until these invasions of people's rights are ended.

18. Here:

President Signs Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act (WPEA)

by Hannah Johnson

After 13 Year Campaign, Federal Workers Get Long-Overdue Upgrades

(Washington, DC) – The Government Accountability Project (GAP) is praising President Obama's signing of S. 743, the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act (WPEA), into law earlier today. The legislation provides millions of federal workers with the rights they need to report government corruption and wrongdoing safely. The bill reflects an unequivocal bipartisan consensus, having received the vote of every member in the 112th Congress, passing both the Senate and House of Representatives by unanimous consent over the past couple of months. The text of the bill can be read here.

GAP Legal Director Tom Devine commented:

"This reform took 13 years to pass because it can make so much difference against fraud, waste and abuse. Government managers at all levels made pleas and repeatedly blocked the bill through procedural sabotage. But once there were no more secret 'holds,' the WPEA passed unanimously, because no politician in a free society can openly oppose freedom of speech. Over the years, earlier versions of this law had been called the Taxpayer Protection Act. Nothing could set a better context for fiscal cliff negotiations than a unanimous, bipartisan consensus to protect those who risk their careers to protect the taxpayers. This victory reflects a consensus ranging from President Obama to Representative Darrell Issa. The mandate for this law is that the truth is the public's business."

Among other key reforms, federal employees now are protected (in addition to already-existing scenarios) from reprisal if they: are not the first person to disclose misconduct; disclose misconduct to coworkers or supervisors; disclose the consequences of a policy decision; or blow the whistle while carrying out their job duties.

<...>

Devine continued, stating

"The victory reflects strong bipartisan teamwork, as well as advocacy within the party, as Republicans often had to work harder at convincing wary colleagues. And it reflects relentless pressure from conservative stakeholders – like the National Taxpayers Union – throughout the last 13 years. Crucial support came from President Obama, who was committed from day one of his term to signing this bill into law. Most Presidents have offered lip service for whistleblower rights, but President Obama fought to give them more teeth."

I am positive that DU has been infiltrated by RWer's cloaked in the flag of patriotism, and they have built up large numbers of "legitimate" posts, and followers or fellow insurgents. These Manchurian DUer's have been waiting for a chance to strike, and since he was re-elected and can't run again Obama is their target. Their "trigger" was probably his re-election, not the queen of diamonds. No one needs to reply to me since this is my opinion. I have been an observer of DU for some time, don't post much but I do see what is going on. And I know the names of a few of the culprits. ProSense you go girl/boy. I am with you, and many of the others that defend what is right against this onslaught.

While one would think simply deleting a page would erase it completely, the nature of the Internet is opposite of this.

This page is archived 1000 times over. It's impossible to scrub some items that are hours old - this page will exist forever at thousands of locations.

150. I think it's more that people trot out "the list" in an attempt to prove there's nothing

to criticize about Obama. That is so clearly not the case that it's sort of akin to putting one's fingers in one's ears and saying "lalalalalalala, I can't hear you..."

Why can't they just respond with a reasonable argument - related to the issue being discussed - as to why the criticism is not valid? Why the need to bring up unrelated issues with "the list"? Why complain about the criticism itself?

160. LOL

So only being negative is valid at all. It only means there are some things to be happy about, positive about.

Whenever I push back against any criticism because I don't agree with it, it's called "cheerleading" and the like. Some people are so negative they don't want to hear about Obama's positive contributions, and expect total lock step agreement of their "criticism" which is supposed to be valid just because it is negative.

Why is "the list" so bothersome? Why, just because it's positive. Why is are the "criticisms" always valid and wrong to question them? Why, just because they are negative.

These are the same people for whom there is nothing that can be done, everyone with a job practically is a corporatist or a bankster, all leaders are corrupt, the US is the worst country in the history of the world, and they are just so cool because they don't like any of it.

162. I could LOL at you too, but I thought I was having a discussion.

The rest of your post became a blah blah blah to me after that. In fact, I don't understand your first sentence at all, perhaps you mistyped?

People are people, just discuss the issue at hand and you won't have to point to the list, unless there's something on "the list" that negates a point someone is making, but even then, you need not mention "a list", you need only refute the point being made.

My experience is that too many people on this board defend Obama blindly and simply won't/can't accept that any criticism of him is valid at all, and so all they can do is respond with "the list" or with something positive Obama did. Problem is that has nothing to do with what was being criticized. Or the response is what you are saying above, that all they hear is criticism. Fact of the matter is, there is way too much to criticize about Obama, and unless you want to play a team sport where your team must always be defended no matter what, you must stand for principles and criticize when elected officials don't.

So, if there is a post criticizing the NSA operations, or the drone strikes, there's no point bringing out the list since that does nothing to add to a discussion of those programs. And responding by stating that some people just want to criticize isn't discussing either of those programs at all either. All you have to do is refute those things with discussion about those things. If you find yourself being called a "cheerleader" that's not good for discussion and shouldn't be done. I would hope that you aren't one, but there are a lot of people on here who are defending unconstitutional behavior and republican policies just because Obama is doing it, so I can understand why people feel there are "cheerleaders" on here. I certainly do. I mean I've had people tell me he never did things that had already been reported as having been done, then when a link was provided they STILL denied it happened. That's just not rational.

29. 'four legs good two legs better'

anyone else notice the paint on the word 'better' looks kinds fresh?

Yes, it was Squealer. A little awkwardly, as though not quite used to sup-
porting his considerable bulk in that position, but with perfect balance, he was
strolling across the yard. And a moment later, out from the door of the farm-
house came a long le of pigs, all walking on their hind legs. Some did it better
than others, one or two were even a tri
e unsteady and looked as though they
would have liked the support of a stick, but every one of them made his way
right round the yard successfully. And nally there was a tremendous baying
of dogs and a shrill crowing from the black cockerel, and out came Napoleon
himself, majestically upright, casting haughty glances from side to side, and
with his dogs gambolling round him.
He carried a whip in his trotter.
There was a deadly silence. Amazed, terri ed, huddling together, the an-
imals watched the long line of pigs march slowly round the yard. It was as
though the world had turned upside-down. Then there came a moment when
the rst shock had worn o and when, in spite of everything | in spite of their
terror of the dogs, and of the habit, developed through long years, of never
complaining, never criticising, no matter what happened | they might have
uttered some word of protest. But just at that moment, as though at a signal,
all the sheep burst out into a tremendous bleating of |
`Four legs good, two legs better! Four legs good, two legs better! Four legs
good, two legs better!'
It went on for ve minutes without stopping. And by the time the sheep
had quieted down, the chance to utter any protest had passed, for the pigs had
marched back into the farmhouse.
Benjamin felt a nose nuzzling at his shoulder. He looked round. It was
Clover. Her old eyes looked dimmer than ever. Without saying anything, she
tugged gently at his mane and led him round to the end of the big barn, where
the Seven Commandments were written. For a minute or two they stood gazing
at the tatted wall with its white lettering.
`My sight is failing,' she said nally. `Even when I was young I could not have
read what was written there. But it appears to me that that wall looks di erent.
Are the Seven Commandments the same as they used to be, Benjamin?'
For once Benjamin consented to break his rule, and he read out to her
what was written on the wall. There was nothing there now except a single
Commandment. It ran:
ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL
BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS

33. Obama promises disappear? Well, conveniently, I happened on a video

which lays it out nicely.

Someone over at Common Dreams posted the url for the video in the comments section. I don't know if this is new or has been around for a while, but I don't remember seeing it. On the other hand, I can't keep up with the outrages anymore.

I watched it yesterday. Lots of pics of kids horribly injured, burned, and DEAD as a result of the Obama Administration's foreign policy. Some with a voice-over of Mr. Obama making a joke (ha ha!, so cute) about the Jonas Bros., his daughters, and "predator drones". Well, a little levity is ok, right?

I look at what I wrote, above, and I think I'm becoming more bitter by the day.

or footage of blood spurting out of a person's neck from the wounds. Hardy har har, threaten the Jonas Brothers with predator drones, so funny...until you actually see what those drones are doing to the innocent civilians, most notably children.

If you are "bitter" for being pissed off about that, I must be too. Oh well, let them call us "bitter." It is a bitter pill they expect us to swallow and then they expect us to never speak up against atrocities. They are fooling absolutely no one. The truth is right there in the video for all to see. Of course, we know the ones who won't bother to watch. It is truly disgusting.

Seriously though does "protect whistleblowers" mean every person who dumps documents should be considered one? That defies logic. Obama does not agree with you on Snowden.

This country has more protections than any other for people who leak information on its bad doings. Snowden could have taken advantage of that. Plus he's in Russia. He just might not qualify as a whistleblower in Obama's opinion. Therefore it is not inconsistent.

58. Agreed, the Republican and Libertarian trolls posing as "progressives" have no shame or ethics.

They will engage in every tactic in the Karl Rove playbook in order to sow division. They specialize in coming to progressive websites and stirring the pot.

They post endless misleading headlines/hit pieces about Democrats, and never say a bad word against any Republican.

Their goal is Divide and conquer. The more division and divisiveness there is on DU the happier they are. End goal is to support and elect more Republicans or Libertarian Teabagger Republicans, depending on their orientation or who is signing their paychecks.

BetterBeleiveIt is an example of this kind of troll. She posted endless articles that were hatchet jobs against Dems based on half-truth and innuendo. When members debunked the posted articles, she accused them of attacking her personally.

Eventually she screwed up and revealed her true intentions by posting anti-Democratic articles from Right-wing sources. At that point, the admins banned her.

This is nothing new, Enrique posted about a particularly egregious one from 2004. He was quite good, and was never caught. However he revealed what he really was on election night 2004:

=======================================

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=3345521

You werent here for seventhson

an ACTUAL troll who was allowed for some reason to rack up thousands of posts accusing John Kerry of ridiculous conspiracy theories, while he was our party's nominee against Bush in 2004.

He was only banned when he outed himself as a troll. How he survived I don't know, he appears to have been really good at working the system, for example sucking up to Will Pitt and Skinner.

He wasn't the only one either. There was a little group of trolls that might have been the same person, their posts amounted to propaganda, like posting photoshops of dems in "pink tutus", the same photoshops that appeared on right-wing sites. No substantive criticisms, just content-free bashing.

And again, they were allowed to rack up thousands of posts and not many people seemed to mind.

DU today is NOTHING like what it used to be, but it is exactly the opposite of what you are saying.

BBI was a female. Lots of BBI sock puppets around now though. I had something like 4 pages of ignores on DU2 and only in the past week decided I had had enough and started up a new list after going ignore-free ever since DU3 went live.

I used to use s/he when I didnt know, but that started to look dumb. So I randomly pick one or the other.

I tend to put my suspected rw trolls on my jury block list. Have to occasionally update it - for example, 6 out of my allowed 10 have been PPR'ed since I last set it up.

111. Just recently graham4anything, a big Obama supporter and word salad impresario was banned

Banned for being troll.

LoZoccolo was another big Obama supporter and long term poster who was banned for being a troll. (K&R if you love Obama!)

It really goes both ways, it's also sometimes impossible to tell over the top enthusiasm trolls from actual Obama supporters, I have my own suspicions about a few posters and I spotted g4a and LZ a long time before they were banned.

Republican policies and continuing and expanding and making legal BushCo policies that were denounced by same trolls when GWB was POTUS. Politics is not a team sport. Integrity and principles matter. Or they're supposed to anyway.

99. I am still waiting -

I have asked for eighteen months for some proof that the Republicans forced Obama to say he approved of Paulson (Circa mid-November 2008, right after winning the election.)

I am still waiting for some ne here to show me that the Republicans forced him to appoint:

1) Geithner
2) to leave Bernanke in his position
3) to re-appoint Ben Bernanke
4) the Monsanto Appointments - including the dean of the new theory of "It's all good cuz I say so" Mike Taylor to a spot of power within the FDA.
5) The Republicans who forced Mr Obama last summer to march 10 staff folks from the Oval Office over to Valsick's office at Dept of Agriculture, as it looked like Valsick was going to agree with activists and insist on having a buffer zone between the GM alfalfa crops and the conventional and org alfalfa

Anyway, you may have photos of how the Republicans forced his appointments. I have been waitin a long time to see the proof that it is the evil Republicans that have forced Mr Obama to do this to our nation.

Feel free to post here or PM me.

66. I have noticed that too.

I've kept a good library of YouTube links to most of his important pomises to the Working Class in Campaign 2008. I have found that it comes in useful when arguing with The BOG.
It is pretty hard to DENY Obama promised something when you have The VIDEO
for backup, though some still try.

I've noticed over the last several months that some of the links have stopped working,
so I found a FireFox AddOn that lets me download the Video to my Hard Drive,
and I have done so to protect the whole library.

I'm especially protective of the Video Clips of the debates where Candidate Obama embarrassed and ridiculed Hillary over things like
Not Raising the Cap to protect SS,
and Insurance Mandates without a Public Option.

144. Bush Scrubs White House Web Site, Removes Embarrassing Material

Profoundly embarrassed by George W. Bush's inability to keep straight whether he considers Osama bin Laden important to the war on terrorism, administration officials have begun to systematically remove from the White House's web site any material that might prove damaging or embarrassing in the future.

Brad Friedman reports:
The idea that the White House may be using their governmental website (which is owned by the People, not by George Bush or the Republicans) for potential partisan advantage is troubling at best and strictly illegal at worst. There is a strict legal line drawn that disallows the use of such public facilities (White House phone lines, etc) for blatant partisan/campaign activities.

It seems clear that the use of the White House website for this purpose would fall under that strict statute and monkeying with it -- and the historical documents it had previously provided -- for political/partisan/campaign gains, I'd think, would be strictly off-limits. I welcome the input from any political legal eagles on this.
Brad lists several things that have been positively identified as no longer available on the White House's site - press conference transcripts, graphics, and more. All of it contains information that contradicts things that Bush has been claiming during the campaign. Of course, only people in the reality-based community would care about such things as consistency and honesty, right?

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/In_the_book_1984_what_is_a_memory_hole

In the book 1984 what is a memory hole?

Answer:

In Nineteen Eighty-Four, a Memory Hole is a small chute in the wall that is used to carry documents down a warm current of air into an incinerator. These devices are found in the Ministry of Truth, where Outer Party members can destroy evidence of a different past using them. For example, a newspaper article that proves that the Party broke a promise will be destroyed using a Memory Hole. There is also a use of Doublethink in this device's name, as it is used to destroy memories of the past.

I can't find the part where it's OK to break laws, either. Maybe they just had something else to hide and we better figure it out before they erase it from the internets.

I'll bet the Obama administration doesn't realize that people could archive it's website either.
