The Royal Baby? I couldn’t give a shit...

Man, with all the suffering in the world caused by Royalty and the 1% of this world, I think the interest and coverage of this story is so not warranted.. Kathryn the Duchess Of Windsor... What crap!
MSNBC has been heavily covering this crap all morning..

133. That logic doesn't really work

There is irony in vehemently expressing ones indifference towards a topic.

If one was truly indifferent then they would likely not be shouting out their opinions on it. One who is outraged on the other hand would be expected to do so.

With that said - I don't the OP falls into that category. Sounds like he is indifferent to the royal birth but is outraged (or at least annoyed) that it distracts from other things the media could be covering.

I couldn't possibly care less about The Royal Birth™. Truly, I couldn't.

I also don't care when people stand up and declare their adoration for The Royal Couple™, explaining to the rest of us why we should just be happy for the young couple etc. etc. etc.

I am, however, nauseated by the front-page treatment that The Royal Birth™ gets. It's been on page two for months, and now we can expect it on page one for the next week or so, with pictures and play-by-play bullshit for months to follow.

Fawning acolytes will scour the pictures for any sign of Diana™, and we'll be treated to the typical embarrassing lovefest that The Royals™ always seem to bring out in a society that seems desperate to reinstate the old class stratification to which The Royals™ are a living, anachronistic monument.

12. Eh, why is it worth

Getting upset over? I don't really care, as the birth has zero effect on me. But for what it's worth, I know a lot of people having babies right now and not a one of them has an effect on me.

On a macro level, I'm concerned about population problem and that isn't a choice my family will make. On a personal level, they're having a baby and they are excited and hopeful. That's not a terrible thing, and it doesn't hurt me to hear about it in passing.

I was referring more to the families I know personally in regards to population.

I suppose someone could argue the footprint one royal kid is going to make over a lifetime to the combined footprint of 4 kids living in a rural, poor area, but the royal still might turn out cheaper.

Regardless, it still really doesn't effect me

MSNBC is not a news source. It's like Fox News but for "liberals".

If anybody relies on MSNBC as a main source of information, they are going to become a very misinformed low information voter.

Royal babies = weapons of mass distraction.

33. Why, so it is!

And yes, I did earn one, in 1965. I fired a perfect score at the range. Better than perfect, actually. There were two holes more than the number of rounds I had fired. Apparently the guy next to me didn't do as well and managed to score on my target a couple of times. The M-16 was an interesting piece, and they had just switched to it at Lackland. We were one of the first basic training groups to use them.

The range master actually came over to congratulate me. I told him I'd grown up shooting at match heads and .22 cartridges on sticks as targets. He just nodded.

50. You too. I was surprised to go to range training and

discover that we would be firing a bunch of brand-new M-16s. I'd read about them, but expected M-14s. It was a treat.

I did play a little trick, though. We fired 100 rounds for scoring. Before that, we were supposed to fire a couple of magazines for practice. Since I knew that I'd qualify easily, I didn't fire all of the practice rounds, once I had sighted the weapon in and saw where it was hitting. At the end of the scoring fire, after marking our targets, we were told to fire any remaining rounds.

I did. But I switched the selector to full auto, and emptied the magazine. I got yelled at, but not too loudly. I wasn't the only one who did that, either. It seemed that others, too, wanted that chance, and had saved some of their practice rounds.

43. Uh, that''s all in the UK.

And in some other countries around the world. The folks there seem to enjoy the symbolism of a monarchy. We don't have such a thing here in the US. We substitute sports stars, musicians, and actors.

Personally, I don't see the utility of any of that. Others do. I'm content to leave them to their own interests. But, you appear to have missed my point from my original reply to your post. Odd, huh?

123. TONS. Buckingham Palace Inc. is HUGE business for the Brits. HUGE tourist attractions.

I'd bet that 90% of all the naysayers everywhere, who poo-poo the royal family and all it's about, would be among the first in line to take pictures of themselves in front of the Palace, the Tower of London, the Changing of the Guard, those Beefeater guards with the big furry helmets, and haunt the souvenir shops for baby bibs decorated with crowns and coffee mugs with Charles's ears on them.

YES they're an anachronism. YES they're expensive. YES they're utter frippery.

So what? They're a diversion - and for a change, a pleasant one. I like this. The news here has been so damn grim and depressing and dreary that I find this actually something of a pleasant, harmless relief. Like taking a coffee break in the middle of a tense workday.

As an old feminist, I find it pleasing that the gender of the baby won't matter. The old musty laws have been changed, and I find that pleasing as well. Now, if it's a girl, SHE will be the sovereign someday. Whether or not she eventually has a little brother. He won't trump her anymore simply because he's male. I find that refreshing and satisfying and encouraging. It's a little thing, but even little things matter. Baby steps, literally as well as figuratively. Even the musty old centuries-old monarchy can update a little and throw off at least some of the old ways that aren't relevant anymore. And I like how we have a future king of England who was able to marry for love. Even his dad wasn't able to do that. William was able to choose his mate for his own personal reasons, for his own personal happiness instead of the old conventions where she had to be a blue-blood, she had to be a virgin, etc etc. As recently as Princess Diana, that liberation did not exist. They're both bent on raising a family in touch with the real world and not remaining insular. That's a good thing, not a bad thing. Because they set an example. And if they're embodying change, and putting a human face on it, that's a good thing, not a bad thing.

Yeah, it's just them, over there across the pond, and it's symbolic. Understood. And so what? I find it pleasing to be able to witness human evolution happening. Like it or not, Will and Kate are leaders in a new age. Their eyes and their minds are both wide open. And they're focused on philanthropy, too, which I always appreciate. AND international bridge-building. Symbolic. Even in a small way. Just like they are, themselves, as royals. And if they're leading a new-age symbolism, that's a good thing.

And living in a country that's not even 300 years old yet, compared with another with well beyond a THOUSAND years of history and culture, I have a respect for that. We're a young whipper-snapper country. In the family of nations, the U.S. is like the unruly teenager. We certainly act our age, wouldn't you say?

The glitz and glamour of the wealthy having their offspring is in sharp contrast to the dismal future of the babes of the rest of us. First of all we are expected to celebrate THEIR new child but we are also expected to endure their vocal abuse of condemning the rest of the population having kids they cannot afford even though THEY control the wage purse strings,THEY prevent birth control whenever possible to all those who cannot afford children, yet expect us to celebrate every time the upper crust adds another to their wealthy family tree.

38. Yeah, sick to death of "The Royal Family"

Things aren't so great for some in their country, in case they hadn't noticed. Living on the streets, for example. Perhaps Queenie could give up one of the palaces to house the homeless, or spare a few million to help some of the little people out.

I think it's obscene for the Royals to live the way they do--as long as there are people suffering, they ought to be doing something about it. Perhaps I'm just intolerant of the privileged, but they've been wiping their feet on commoners for way too long.

Diana was the only one who really ever seemed to care about anyone.

There are plenty of threads already discussing the repeal of Obamacare or the clusterfuck in Texas. If you disagree, start more. But don't disparage people because you disapprove of their topics. Appeal to Skinner-if he agrees with you, the thread will go away and you win.

Starting a thread just to bitch about other threads make DU suck, IMHO.

51. So MSNBC exists just to cover things that entertain you or that you think important?

I have no interest in baseball or football, would it be sensible if I bemoaned coverage of the World Series or the Superbowl?

I doubt the media has ever covered everything in proportion to its importance. The media has always covered things that at least a subset of people are interested in - especially if they have an easy story line. This does - whether a girl or boy, this child has an excellent chance of being Britain's monarch. The first time that will happen if the baby is a girl. In addition, it is a break from largely negative news - Trayvon Martin, the various wars, Congress for the most part, an economy recovering unequally - not creating enough jobs needed for the bottom half or the kids who graduated college since 2009. It is celebrity news - and as celebrities go, that couple are at least as well intentioned as most.

I'm very happy that William found a women to produce a heir to the throne. I think they make a great couple and have taken the celebrity quite well considering the whole freaking world does give a shit about them. I remember the day he was born and watched his parents get married in '81 or '82. I've always been interested in hearing about them as long as they (the photographers) don't invade their privacy.

102. I have a problem trashing anyone without proper cause

And in this case especially since I have no knowledge whatsoever of anything "bad, evil or morally wrong" Kate has done.
William is by all accounts a skilled rescue helicopter pilot stationed on the North Sea, one of the most dangerous waters in the world. His mother was taken from him early in her life. I'm sure he doesn't give a damn what you or I think anyway. She was also a great woman who did much for poor and endangered people all over the world.
Most of the Royal family are known more for their social and charity work, The Queen has lived a long and interesting life since being a nurse in London during WWII. She has also been the Monarch who has seen more countries gain independence than any other.
I'd also like to note for the record; This royal child (no matter the gender) will be 3rd in line for the crown. This is a great step forward for women's rights in Great Britain.

If you think the M$M is covering this to much and missing other stories I tend to agree with you. Much of the coverage is over hyped.

disclaimer: I am of Scottish Royal descent, my family having immigrated to America in the 1600's some 13 generations ago. I am also in favor of Scottish independence.

112. Conversation with my sister about an hour ago

Her: She's in labor!
Me: Who? Your daughter? She's only 3 months along.
Her: No, Kate.
Me: Kate who?
Her: You know... Kate... Prince William's wife.
Me: *slowly processing* Oh. I forgot he got married. So she's fulfilling her royal duty of being a broodmare to make sure the lineage continues, eh?
Her: I think broodmare's a little harsh.
Me: Tell me something interesting about Kate and her accomplishments before she started seeing William.
Her: *silence*

117. I should begin a thread about how careless I am in regards to automobiles

I should begin a thread about how careless I am in regards to automobiles. Yet I then reflect and realize the absurd amount of petulance I would advertise by investing my time and emotion into writing a post about how little I invest my care, my time or my emotion into that thing.

However, I'm quite certain you'll find the difference between six of one and half a dozen of the other.

122. I have no interest.

What I don't understand is why I come to DU and find people announcing their lack of interest. I mean, lack of interest SHOULD equate to not starting threads about it, right?

I have to assume some DUers are spending time with TV and radio news and talk that is reporting on the birth, otherwise they wouldn't be posting about it.

I like my simple solution: don't tune in to tv and radio news. One can stay informed without it.

166. Of course the struggle continues, doesn't it? But taking time

out for simple pleasures and joy in life....aren't we allowed that?

My friend decided she would stop watching news all together. I always
thought this was a move of stupid people.

Starting to think......

167. despite what some people think, we ARE allowed that. as a matter of fact, it is absolutely

essential to nourish our souls, our hearts, as well as our bodies. makes it a bit easier to continue the struggle. too bad there are some who do not realize this.

I think your friend is smart. I do not watch the news (not just because it is depressing, but because the inappropriate smiles, smirks, and inability to read a teleprompter (or have someone write that stuff correctly make me want to throw things). I read --and even there, many occasions where I want to throw things. But I don't have that ugly visual energy coming at me.

Tonight I am looking at the beautiful moon, and listening to wonderful music. it helps.

168. Beautiful moon and music. I can't see the moon where

I am, but sounds fantastic.

Why don't we stop the insanity and just, all of us, just say:

"We care about people?"
"We want everyone to have a doctor?"
"We want war to stop?"
"We want our air and water to be clean?"
"We want people who love each other to be married, if they want?"
etc. etc. etc.

And just stick with it....and keep on repeating it...and then just enjoy the life that is so precious and so short ?

148. I'm offended by Americans embracing "royalty"

The whole concept of "royalty" pisses me off, and it astounds me that Britain still even recognizes their "royalty". France was smart enough to get rid of even the concept of royalty when they had their revolution, but Britain never did, and even in this day and age still fawns over their "royals". With America's history one would think we would be rightfully offended by even the concept of royalty yet here we are fawning over some other country's "royals" and particularly Britain's "royals" that makes a mockery of everything this country has always stood for and its history.

Piss on the "royal" couple, their "royal" baby and the entire concept of royalty that Britain still clings to and Americans shamefully are embracing by going all ga-ga over a farce of a "duchess" having a "royal" child. If not for this farce of "royalty" they'd be ordinary people having a baby and needing to work for a living rather than sponging off the country's wealth just because of who they are - who they were born to or married not because of ancestry that gained wealth through work which can be obtained or lost by ordinary wealthy folk but who are wealthy through what they've taken from their country due to the ridiculous concept of being ordained by God to have it. These people are who they are and have what they have through nothing more than a direct line of birth to the very king George of Germany America fought against to get out from under that yoke. Today's people of Britain aren't even citizens, they're subjects of this farcely "royal" family, and it's WAY passed time to unload both the "royal" family and the entire concept of royalty.

Perhaps I could have used your help in writing this thread... I think I wrote the short form which annoyed so many here.. They all sounded so clever with their sarcastic comments.. wish I could be as talented. So thanks for taking it to the next step...which I kind of thought was what everyone would have thought..

Don't make the Nelson family angry! You LOVE baby poop! Royal baby poop is divine! Besides you got to fluff 30 minutes of nothing into filler material. Not like they report news anymore. Just when Justin Bieber makes a poop. And Madonna.
