So Wikileaks actually attacked Obama for using a teleprompter?

WikiLeaks ?@wikileaks 5h

Obama's mask continues to slip in this affair. Under all the acting, and reading of teleprompters, a vindictive, petty, authoritarian.

https://twitter.com/wikileaks

Really? Talk about petty. Why is it that right wingers and other Obama haters love to use the the teleprompter attack against Obama? How come the teleprompter was never an issue when other presidents used it?

Case in point:

Carter:

Reagan:

Poppy Bush:

Clinton:

GWB:

All these past presidents using teleprompters, yet for some reason Obama's use of the teleprompter is outrageous and unacceptable.

Gee, I wonder what makes Obama different from every other president pictured above?

I can't quite put my finger on it.

Is it because he's.....nah can't be.

Isn't the "teleprompter" thing a RW meme?

It's a dog whistle that he's really not smart enough to speak on his own and that he's so obvious about it it calls into question his reading and comprehension skills. No question about it. There is no other way to interpret it. Calling into question a person of color's speaking and reading skills is always one of the first lines of attack with racism. We've seen that recently with the Zimmerman trial and it pops up all the time in other places. I remember when there was a rumor actor Chris Tucker couldn't read after he had secured a 15m paycheck for Rush Hour. Bizarre, but never fails as a go to tactic when you want to call a black person's intelligence into question.

the teleprompter and being accused of being an actor are accompanying barbs.

ie-"That guy isn't just up there reciting his lines well, he really is an asshole".

Probably even less complimentary, I grant, but not a serious attack on using a teleprompter.

Poor Snowden breaks laws and gets in bed with China and Russia, decides he doesn't like it, so it's the big bad mean US making him actually account for his actions.

So when someone steals your car tomorrow, you won't mind if no one goes after them? That'd be petty and vindictive, right?

I guess I should have used quotes for clarity. I don't think the President is being motivated by pettiness and vindictiveness really though I think there is another nefarious motivation-he is an ideological corporatist and is dedicated to maintaining and expanding the status quo of power above all else.

from the article:

When I try to question him about the morality of what he's done, if he worries about unleashing something that he can't control, that no one can control, he tells me the story of the Kenyan 2007 elections when a WikiLeak document "swung the election".

The leak exposed massive corruption by Daniel Arap Moi, and the Kenyan people sat up and took notice. In the ensuing elections, in which corruption became a major issue, violence swept the country. "1,300 people were eventually killed, and 350,000 were displaced. That was a result of our leak," says Assange. It's a chilling statistic, but then he states: "On the other hand, the Kenyan people had a right to that information and 40,000 children a year die of malaria in Kenya. And many more die of money being pulled out of Kenya, and as a result of the Kenyan shilling being debased."

<snip>

I don't like his complacent assurance that he was right, but it really is a complex question.

It's just a number, right?

Why isn't Assange supporting drones in spades?

The war in Iraq killed around 125k people (lowest estimate, I think it's far higher, but this illustrates the point).

The drone death toll is approximately 4700. That's 26 times less death and destruction than the war in Iraq. And in a half dozen countries.

Julian's justification or, should I say, contrast and comparison, is the same kind of crap the CIA uses when it makes its decisions in foreign countries. The people sitting behind the desks making these intelligence decisions are quite literally telling themselves and one another that "we're saving lives by doing this action, because the alternative is much costlier." It's a cold, calculated, numbers game for them.

For what it's worth I completely support the release of all government and corporate data, no exceptions.

Not meaning to spam but my comments better suited to your thread:

I remember making fun of how Bush used them, completely unable to view a whole sentence without moving his head from left to right and sounding out the big words. It wasn't the teleprompter we found ridiculous in this case, it was the grade school like use of it!!

Obama has never done that; however some seem to think any use of the teleprompter is somehow suspect. That's stupid. People used to refer to notes to give speeches. Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address on an envelope. No one would have criticized him for referring to his notes. Even reading off them verbatim. Or using cue cards. No one expects a politician to memorize every word of a speech or deliver an extemporaneous speech every time he opens his mouth. They are not actors. So why criticize teleprompters? It makes no sense. When Obama reads off a teleprompter, he clearly takes in whole sentences and delivers them without the gaffes Bush used to entertain us making. There's a reason we laughingly refer to Bush as the "misunderstimator" or the "edjumacation" president.

Do we expect presidents to give speeches like they were delivering lines in plays? Can't we just accept that these are their official words written after thought and revision and delivered live? Honestly. It is a stupid thing to criticize.
