I was pissed when KO left MSNBC, and I didn't think the the cool demeanor of Lawrence O'Donnell was the best replacement for that time slot.
Moving Ed into the 8pm slot was a gamble, but I think that gamble has paid off. Ed is on top of and out in front of issues like worker and womens rights, going the extra mile to take his show to the issue and by having a much more diverse choice in guests than was KO's want. KO's show is pretty much an echo chamber, while Ed does have opposition guests on with whom he does battle (he's also getting better about letting guests talk. I think MSNBC could help him there by cutting down on the number of segments per show and lengthening the segments proportionally). Ed certainly delivers his spiel much better than KO, who continues to talk too fast to avoid tripping over his words, often when he's delivering what should be the money line.
Ed can still stumble about looking for words, and he can get lost reading the teleprompter on occasion, but overall, his show is killer. Last night's was one of the best ever. Now, if MSNBC would drop those "where are the jobs" promos for Ed. They seem counterproductive to the fact that job growth is quite robust these days.
And I think Lawrence is in a better time slot for the kind of show he delivers. I'm think that titling it "The Last Word" indicates that MSNBC planned all along to move him to the last slot on their nightly line up of punditry.
Any other Ed fans out there?

(5,044 posts)Ed, Morning Joe, The Daily Rundown, NOW, Hardball and even Rachel have all made this tack to the right and included more conservative "contributors". This has shifted the debate to the right, passed the center. I get why they did it, it does not change what the result is.
Just ask Elizabeth Warren's campaign.

(5,609 posts)Over time, Cenk, Keith and Jennifer are finding their paticular paths and their audience. While I adore Rachel and often enjoy Lawrence and Ed, I'm turned off by the wingnuts that MSNBC foists on the hosts' progressive viewers.

(5,044 posts)I like what Current is trying to do with the independent progressive slant, however they have a lot of work to do. Granholm is new, she needs some time to tweak her show. She has the opportunity to do great things as long as she avoids the "bipartisan" pitfall. If she tries to do that same garb as MSNBC she will fail as there are 50 other shows trying to bill hem selves as inclusive.
TYT, Up with Chris Hayes, Politics Nation, Melissa Harris Perry, Democracy Now are templates for success. We should be supporting David Shuster as well, he is doing a great job filling in for KO.
And Martin Bashir.....I love that Guy!

(13,776 posts)Rachel is the only one I watch pretty much without fail, so I'm only speaking of her show--but when she had the GOP guy from Maine on last night, and in other friendly interviews with Tim Pawlenty and Michael Steele and even Rick Santorum, I've thought that it was great that Republicans were willing to come on her show because they would always be treated respectfully (she doesn't let them get away with false statements, but she keeps things civil). To me, interviewing people of opposing views validates MSNBC as a source of real journalism while Fox remains a joke. I couldn't guess whether this is a deliberate tactic on her part, so that she can get interviews like the "kill the gays" guy from Uganda on and get him to flash his own ass instead of just telling us about him second-hand, or whether it's because Rachel is a nice person who's genuinely interested in looking at something from all sides--I think it's both, and I think it's a good thing. I won't deny that I also enjoyed MSNBC before all the Republican contributors started showing up, though.

(4,867 posts)I think some more "elite" progressives hate him. But when it comes to looking out for the blue collar (union or not) worker there is no one that compares. I think its important for the left to maintain its working class base. We aren't all driving Volvos and living in the suburbs (not that there it anything wrong with that) The right doesn't own the working class vote, and they shouldn't.

(34,328 posts)I DVR one or the other, along with Martin Bashir, Rachel Maddow, Jennifer Granholm, Lawrence O'Donnell, and Cenk Uyger. I'm shocked that one of my favorite shows has turned out to be Al Sharpton's. Politics Nation has really grown on me and I watch it every day. I also really like Up With Chris Hayes but I DVR that too because I refuse to get up at 7 or 8 on weekends.

BTW, you can't believe the ad war going on in MI. I've taken to DVRing the local news and any network shows I want to watch just to blow through the political commercials. February 28 cannot come soon enough...

(1,453 posts)Ed has improved, imo, and he seems the most passionate about his pet peeves in the MSNBC lineup.
Go big Ed!
I like Ed. I think at the beginning, he sort of went through a transitional period (radio to TV) where he had to learn a few new tricks, but his focus hasn't changed.
Also, I think Ed has a little bit more multi-generational appeal than KO did. (I don't mean that as a slight to KO)
My father, who is in his early 70s, really likes Ed too.

(46,585 posts)He's really improved tremendously! I still think he's a subpar interviewer though; he almost never asks followup questions. Still I'm glad he's sunk an anchor into that time slot.

(2,198 posts)both Ed and Al are fast becoming the best on MSNBC evening. The morning I no longer watch because if I want FOX I'll just turn to it.

(46,585 posts)I was laughing on Friday at the end of Rachel's show when they toasted to PRISON!, the "lockup" shows that immediately follow Rachel on Friday evening. Thank goodness MSNBC has a weekend lineup. I love Chris Hayes plus Melissa Harris-Perry's new show starts this weekend.

(1,408 posts)Ed was never on my radar because I dvr'd Rachel,Lawrence, and Keith on Current. When Ed switched timeslots with Lawrence I was actually pissed off because while O'Donnell does not always hit a homerun with his show I love his inside "smarts."
So I grudgingly gave Ed a look (just recently as a matter of fact)and absolutely fell in love with his style and honesty. He is doing an amazing job!
....Although I think he over reacted a little bit last night to the Jeremy Lin fortune cookie incident.*
Now Keith seems to be the odd man out when I set my dvr but it is only because he always seems to have a fill in every time I turn him on.
*a fans sign at MSG showed his head bursting out of a fortune cookie for the Knicks and the MSG network showed the poster.

5. I think he should go back to ten o'clock and Ed, with his new format,
should be moved to eight.
Of course when KO's new show starts running at 8:00pm it is going to hurt anyone who is on MSNBC at that time.
Tweety doesn't count IMO. He is on at five and seven eastern but that is four and six central, three and five mountain and two and four pacific.
He is right up there with Mrs. Greenspan and isn't in the same league as the prime time anchors.

(3,818 posts)He's worked really hard on improving his show and it shows. He's doing a great job. Now if he'd only get rid of the Psycho Talk segment or rename it...
