Tempers flare as Republicans boo Rep. Corrine Brown for shaming them over food stamp cuts

Republicans in the House of Representatives on Thursday threatened to strike a Democratic representative’s words from the record and then booed her after she shamed them for cutting food stamp funding from the farm bill.

“The Bible says, to whom much is given, much is required,” Rep. Corrine Brown (D-FL) observed during debate over whether funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) should be stripped from the farm bill. “And this is a sad day in the House of Representatives. Shame on the Republicans! Shame on the House of Representatives!”

After an objection from Rep. Rob Woodall (R-GA), Speaker pro tempore Kevin Yoder (R-KS) ordered Brown to “suspend” and “be seated.”

“Excuse me,” Brown replied, glaring at Yoder. “What did I say that was incorrect?”

In a point of parliamentary inquiry, Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD) pointed out that Republican members of Congress had often called out President Barack Obama and even said, “Nancy Pelosi’s a train wreck.”

“And their words have not been taken down and they’ve not been seated,” Edwards insisted. “Is it not in order for the gentle lady to be recognized and to be able to speak on this issue, merely saying ‘Republicans’?”

Yoder then gaveled for Edwards to “suspend” and noted that Woodall had demanded that Brown’s words be taken down.

1. So why is she the ONLY Democrat shaming them? Don't the rest have any spines?

Rhetorical question.

4. she wasn't the only one doing this.

they repeatedly blocked forward progress by calling for votes on all procedures and engaging in debate about this deplorable bill stripped of food stamps. Something that hasn't been the case since 1973.

3. This story is so goddamn pathetic. It is what Tea Party Republicanism of 2010 and beyond has wrought

and it is a sorry state to find our so-called representative democracy. GOP fucksticks: "we want a way to give subsidies to mega agribusinesses but not help poor people"

18. Gerrymandering was the result of 2010, not the cause.

What changed in 2010 vs 2008 was Democrats went from bringing lots of people to the polls to just voting themselves.

and reached the exact opposite conclusion. even when democratic turnout was high, gerrymandring made it harder to elect a democrat in certain states.

I'm sorry, but we lost 2010 by not working hard enough. And we're going to be dealing with that for the next decade.

36. Democrats won in California.

We elected Jerry Brown and a slate of Democrats in 2010 -- replacing the Schwarzenegger crowd.

Hurrah for California Democrats.

We get out and register voters.

We get the vote out.

We are solidly Democratic -- and very liberal too.

The problem in many states is that the Democrats are almost as conservative as the Republicans.

If you are a religious fanatic and you want to do right, it's easy for someone to tell you that voting Republican is the way to get to heaven if the Democrat is not presenting a real choice and is not very dynamic.

The Tea Party has attracted support because it speaks out -- mostly screaming crazy stuff, but it takes definite stands. Too many of our democratic legislators show little backbone, little courage and don't want to be pinned down about where they really stand.

It seems to be our side that always has to reach out and compromise. That is not right. We need stronger leadership in our party.

I would like to see every DUer join his/her local party and get active. That's how we can win America.

See this revolting video.

during the public comment period at an "immigration roundtable" sponsored by my immigrant-hatin', Republican state senator. I was booed too. Right-wing, "Christian", conservatives don't really like what the Bible has to say when it comes to how we should treat our neighbors.

Granted, it's not the way many of us would express shame, but they're rethugs, remember. There should have been the majority of Dems encouraging this proud display of wretched shame upon the heads of these mean spirited deniers of Justice and Compassion.
