Charles Pierce dissects little Ricky's Boise speech, the crystalline essence of politics gone mad

Way too much good stuff to quote here -- please read all of it at the link below -- but here are some snippets, quotes from Santorum's speech and Pierce's comments:

http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/romney-santorum-2012-6655656

"You wanted help out there on the frontier, you formed groups. You formed societies and associations, and little schools, and organizations to help people. You didn't look to the federal government."

(Excuse me? The Morrill Act? The Homestead Act? The railroads? If you wanted help stealing the land from the original occupants, and then protection when they got all cranky about it, you sure as hell looked to the federal government, which had an army, and not to the local Grange, which had pie contests and quilting bees. To say nothing of the Louisiana Purchase, a big government program without which the "frontier" would have ended somewhere outside of Louisville.)

-snip-

"When it was all the rage, when the NBC peacock was green, because we were all concerned about the 'science' of manmade global warming, when everybody was running for the hills because there was 'real climate science' that showed man's imapct on the warming and cooling of the planet, I didn't run and sit on a couch next to anybody on television. I didn't pass, as governor, the first cap on carbon emissions in the history of the country. I stood and said, 'This isn't climate science. This is political science.' And guess who turned out to be right.I give credit to the other folks in this campaign. At least they've come to their senses. The president still believes this garbage. Why? Because this is how The Left wants to control.... Why? You can't be trusted with freedom."

(Vote for me. While others quailed, I dared to be proudly ignorant and paranoid. Come on in! The stupid's fine!)

-snip-

Pierce also skewers Romney for no longer being able to "take advantage of Santorum's most obvious weakness — that he is a misogynist god-botherer with extremist positions on everything to do with how humans have their sexytime with each other" because "Romney has sold so much of his political soul to the wingnut base of his party on these issues that his positions on them are now indistinguishable from Santorum's" even while "Santorum is running all over the country, behaving like a tinpot religious satrap and talking like a nut."

We've never had a more entertaining GOP primary.

And no one writes about it better than Pierce.

like an Xmas goose and does so better than anyone since Mencken himself. Viciously funny and brutally accurate. A daily must-read.
