Man facing 13 years for anti-bank chalk protest found NOT GUILTY by a jury of his peers.

Last edited Mon Jul 1, 2013, 05:41 PM - Edit history (2)

Local man found not guilty in chalk vandalism case
Jeffrey Olson not guilty of all 13 charges

SAN DIEGO - A 40-year-old man was acquitted Monday of 13 misdemeanor vandalism charges that stemmed from protest messages written in chalk in front of three Bank of America branches in San Diego.

Jeffrey David Olson's attorney argued during the trial -- which garnered national attention -- that his client was engaging in a legal protest and was not maliciously defacing of property.

Olson could have faced up to 13 years behind bars if convicted of all counts. Jurors began deliberating Friday.

The rest: http://www.10news.com/news/verdict-in-san-diego-chalk-vandalism-case-070113

I know an incredible amount of very terrible things have been happening...but I swear to God, if this guy had wound up in jail for chalking up a sidewalk, I might have started firebombing.

So shines a good deed in a weary world.

On Edit: P.S. "I might have started firebombing" was pretty straight-up hyperbole. Some of you people really need to get outside more often.

If the PTB don't think that such a tipping point exists, then they have no reason to allow the democratic system to produce meaningful change before that point is reached. Voting drives, protests, and so forth only work because the PTB realize that if they don't let them work (sometimes...preferably on things that don't matter much), then they might well find themselves standing in front of a bullet-pocked wall with a blindfold on.

Mon Jul 1, 2013, 04:18 PM

That’s right. In 2010, while BofA was negotiating a sweet settlement deal for its foreclosure fraud, it paid nothing in taxes. (Source: FACT Coalition.) Zero, on $17.2 billion in offshore earnings. (Source: Americans for Tax Fairness.)

Its $4.1 billion tax break came on the heels of the bank’s taxpayer-funded bailout, immunity from prosecution for its criminal employees, and a cushy government settlement for its foreclosure fraud.

Now David Dayen reports that the bank has apparently continued to defraud customers in violation of its government settlement. Whistleblowers have stated in affidavits that they were “told to lie” to customers, continued to deceive homeowners before foreclosing on them, and flipped customers to new servicing companies to invalidate previous homeowner agreements.

He's the City Attorney who is a Complete Tool of the Rightwing in San Diego - Doug Manchester who owns the Uniont Tribune, The Lincoln Club who is our local ALEC, and the Corporate Reugs who still think they own San Diego...even tho we recently elected Bob Filner, (probably the most certifiably progressive Democrat in the Country) as mayor.

This Judge also needs to be voted out. Not only did he deny this defendant a "free speech" defense, which is what the whole case was about and impose a gag order on anyone discussing the case...including our Mayor. He also teamed up with our hyper rightwing local DA Bonnie Dumanis to prosecute medical marijuana ...he kept calling it "dope" in court and denying the defendant use of our legal marijuana laws as defense. Typical Republican judicial scrambling just like Roberts on the VRA - if it's about (free speech, equal right to vote, etc) just deny the essential right or fact as a defense and move on with the decision.

Our new mayor, Bob Filner, is in daily struggle against the entrenched rightwing in San Diego, Goldsmith has tried to obstruct Filner at every turn, playing the usual Repug "victim" while defending the deep wealthy and corporate interests. Filner had referred to this "chalking" trial as a waste of taxpayer money and denial of free speech. Yet Friday the rightwing local news(ABC especially) were treating Filner as tho he were the wingnut not Goldsmith or this judge.

Filner just seems to be out there without a shield from the daily (main) media (Manchesters newspaper U-T & NCTIMES) and Tv affiliates.

Even the SD Dem Party is oddly quiet against the constant barrage Filner faces from the Repubs.

I'm checking ABC, NBC & CBS local reports tonight on this case...then complaining to each if they continue to feature this story in the pro BofA & Goldsmith bias they've shown so far.

Filner won the election; SD is now a Democratic city and County. Manchester, VOSD, and all the Tv stations should start respecting the voters.

3 die when Greek protesters set fire to bank

Three people were reported killed Wednesday after protesters set fire to a bank building in central Athens as workers across Greece went on strike to protest tough austerity measures aimed at staving off economic collapse.

Tear gas billowed across the central Sintagma Square in front of Parliament as demonstrators trying to storm the Parliament building hurled rocks and gasoline bombs. Police responded with tear gas canisters that spread a choking pall of smoke.

Tens of thousands of people had converged on the city center as part of a general strike that paralyzed flights, ferries, schools and hospitals.

At one point, Reuters reported, protesters set fire to a building and a witness saw firefighters evacuate at least four people. "There are probably people trapped in the building," fire officials said in a statement before the news emerged that people trapped in the building had died. The police blamed what were called "hooded youths" for setting fire to the building.

The Greek fire brigade reported that three people died in the building, according to the Associated Press.

The Mayor himself declared the trial a waste of taxpayer's money and prosecutorial power. A unanimous jury verdict after such a short deliberation lends credence to those statements and a reasonable person might question what the prosecutor's motivations were to spend the taxpayer's money on such a needless case.
