I hope the south does break away

Just so I can quit seeing the whiny posts about how the south is responsible for every problem in the nation.

I'm so sick of seeing whinyass Californians and New Englanders whining and crying about the south..FINE...LETS GO OUR SEPERATE WAYS

I don't give a shit how bad it could be...it can't be worse than the constant whining here about us and how fucked up we are.

FUCK THE NORTH

You want us to divorce?...SOUNDS GOOD TO ME..I'm tired of listening to our whiny ass northern half constantly bitching and whining and telling everyone how great the world would be if they could just get rid of us southerners.

If you don't like us I have a clue..YOU can leave...you don't need us to leave..you can and I hope to God will leave

I think if this country does break up, it will not happen peacefully. Many people in North America would die. IMO, with the ease of ability to construct chemical WMDs, they would be used against large metropolitan areas, and large farming and ranching areas. We would have the equivalent of the Russian Revolution on American soil. I do not want to see tens of millions of people die. No matter the political differences, I do not want millions of my fellow Americans dead. Eliminationism is not acceptable. The Nazis, Fascists, Marxist-Leninists, Maoists, Communists all did that. We do not want to be judged by history as equivalent to them.

That said, nobody actually literally wants a secession. At least nobody sane. First because we may not like the states as big generic entities but we like plenty of individuals inside them... second because a secession would not just be a friendly handshake and re-drawing some lines on a map. There would be bloodshed and destruction and plenty of it.

It's just a steam blowing off rant kinda like what you just ranted right back. Only somewhat more justified and based in real actual grievances.

Y'all started a secession, both your neighbors to the north voted against following suit, (my dad's people's county voted 81% NO) things got out of control and it happened anyhow, then we died -- both military and civilians-- in greater proportion than the Deep South warmongers or anyone up north.

My sister in Maryland does not want to live in a different hostile country from her brother in Virginia. I have a brother in Massachusetts, a sister in Montana and cousins from Canada to Mexico and coast to coast. I suspect all of us would be willing to fight and die to preserve the Union, just as our southern Unionist ancestors were.

But no matter what crazy shit gets flung here by extremists from the Deep South or Pacific Northwest or California or New England saying "let's tear the country apart again and make sure you border states suckers die in vast numbers again"-- the center of power is on the Potomac and the memories of four years of death and destruction are not forgotten.

It will not happen, but reckless idiot extremists wishing it on us still pours salt in a wound that will never completely close.

You aren't fucked up. I don't know what set you off, but you're not the first Southern DUer to feel hurt and insulted by ill-thought out comments.

I live in Seattle. When I was a teenager, I was taking a Black history course. Pretty new back in those days. My teacher was a beautiful black woman. I asked her about the differences in racism between the North and the South. She said she preferred the South, because it wasn't hidden and your friend was your friend--or not. She felt like Seattle was more "smile in your face" with a lot more tokenism.

As far as Red states. Washington state is half Red really, Eastern Washington is quite conservative.

your post sounds pretty fuckin whiny to me.

Nobody's going anywhere and we have a lot more important things to worry about than whether somebody is dissing their region.

Does that make you more of a Northerner and less of a Southerner, or what.

I am confused.

About 80 percent of the problem in the South will go away.

"The South will rise again"!! (Literally, this time)

It was too damned hot for too damned long.

I do understand your point and you are correct. The south bashing posts are offensive ... it is tough as hell to be a liberal/ progressive in many places in the south and I can only imagine southern DUers not feeling welcome or appreciated here.

It all comes down to percentages .... the coasts and the north have right wing lunatics, as well.

I am in Michigan .... the knuckle dragging right wing nut jobs have over-run our state government (ironically, while voting for these jack asses, we also voted for Obama

I really did hate living in the south (for the stated reasons)

edit: I did something weird with the smilies

As a southern DUer, I face hatred from both sides. In real life, I am surrounded by homophobic Bible Belt assholes who voted to make sure I never have the right to get married (NC Amendment 1), among numerous other ignorant, hateful crap they do, then I come to DU to be lumped in with them and hated here too. It feels like I can't win. I'm just glad DU is not my only means of finding friends. At one point, when I first got online, DU seemed like a dream come true, then I realized I am seen as less than everyone else here because I am from the south. Since then, I have met people both where I live and online elsewhere who do not think in such stark up/down terms when it comes to people.

There are liberals and conservatives in every state in our union.

when the South asked for it. lol

I am a Southerner & love the South. I wouldn't want another civil war because like one of posters said in this thread, millions of people will get killed or hurt.

I am sick of south bashing, too, but usually they're just idiots. I don't understand their obsession with the South here on DU. There are many Northerner DUers who are great as well. I don't want to judge the North just as they shouldn't judge the South. We all need to take a close look at the root of the problem. What I think is even if the North got rid of the South by fencing us in or actually cut the South and let it float away with us in, it will probably create a vacuum and something worse will take over. It won't solve the problem. Because the 1% (Wall Street) will still be in the North destroying the economy & middle class. They will want more and more then many of people in the North will become poor and uneducated like the South.

After the Civil War the South suffered from the carpetbaggers coming down from the North to steal lands, etc. Look at Florida beaches. I am a Floridian native and am sick of people like Donald Trump coming down to grab up beaches with their money with help of corrupted politicians, building high rise condos along the coast, stealing beaches from people. I remember very well as a child we were able to enjoy going to beaches. Now most of it is "private property" owned by the rich. Actually I welcome people coming from everywhere to enjoy Florida beaches as long as they respect the nature and leave it alone..not be like a parasite or a thief.

Another problem I see here in the South: Religion. Those preachers need to be reined in and stop asking people for money. This is how they control people by fear of "going to hell". If we could make it illegal for them to preach "prosperity" with "if you give $100 God gives you $10,000" crap. They need to stop being tax free, too. If we can get rid of them problems will be lessened and more people will be more educated. Even politicians use religion to get votes. And many of politicians are corrupted. Usually they're already a millionaire, out of touch with regular people. Not all of them are bad like FDR & JFK, but they're rare.

I've lived in Washington D.C., PA, California and visited NYC. I still love living here in the South. It's home to me...for better for worse. I love Southern food especially grits

I've been trying to make the South better for years. I've spoke up, signed many petitions, etc. Who can beat Koch Brothers who are paying those politicians in the South to help them win? Arkansas was democrat controlled for 138 years until 2012 with help of Koch's money. Like I said while ago...look at the root of the problem. I am NOT willing to let idiots have the South and you're not helping by beating us.

we have had the longest tenure of Democratic US Senators of *any* state since Reconstruction. And we can lay claim to two of the greatest US Senators-- Joe Robinson, who was instrumental in getting key provisions of the New Deal passed, and J. William Fulbright, who became a key critic of the Vietnam War and who is the namesake of the Fulbright Scholarship.

So please, leave. Then we will be free to deal with the ignorant, dumb-asses up here, and free up the resources needed to progress.

Somebody put up a post a day or two ago that was supposed to demonstrate all the wonderful things we would lose if you left the union. Problem is that 95% of the things listed are only appealing to other dumb-ass rednecks. Maybe if you left the union, most of the people that like things like NASCAR and Lynyrd Skynyrd and wrasslin would emigrate and you could book Molly Hatchet and have a big ole Bar-b-que and beer-bust to celebrate your new-found commonality.
