'Big Valley' star Peter Breck dies at 82

Peter Breck, who played a hot-headed son of California ranch owner Barbara Stanwyck on the 1960s TV Western "The Big Valley," died Monday in Vancouver after a long illness. He was 82.

His wife announced his death on the website The Big Valley Writing Desk.

Before the 1965-1969 ABC series, the dark-haired, rugged-looking Breck had worked as a regular on two other TV Westerns: "Maverick," as Doc Holliday opposite James Garner, and "Black Saddle," on which he played a gunman turned lawyer opposite future "Gilligan’s Island" actor Russell Johnson.

I just noticed that the actor, RIchard Long--who played the older brother, Jared, died at age 47 of a heart attack in the early 1970s... So, living to 82 was certainly a good long life in comparison...

He was doing "Nanny and the Professor" with Juliet Mills -- I think he died soon after that show ended.

There's a really cool retro TV network on my cable system now called Me TV (Memorable Entertainment Television). It has back to back episodes of The Big Valley on in the afternoons, and (I think) on weekends.

I was too young to watch it back when it was on, but I remember it well. Can't say I was too impressed with the plotlines, but the shows pulled me in anyway. Barbara Stanwyk (I like the credit she gets -- *Miss* Barbara Stanwyk) was absolutely gorgeous, and it was fun to see a younger Lee Majors and Linda Evans.

All the men on that show were, as they say, hunks, including Peter Breck. I guess it's just down to Majors and Evans now. Sad to see them go.

I wonder if my brother knows. This was his favorite show and think Nick was his favorite character. He watched it so often he practically knew the lines...

Godspeed, Peter Breck. I loved the show, too.
