87. Jury Results on an alert.

AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Results of your Jury Service

At Sat May 25, 2013, 04:18 PM an alert was sent on the following post:

i found irresponsibility in that picture
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2899407

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See <a href="http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=aboutus#communitystandards" target="_blank">Community Standards</a>.)

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

Sick shock flame trolling. Hide this trolling, over the top shock. Sickening.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sat May 25, 2013, 04:29 PM, and the Jury voted 1-5 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Sick shock flame trolling? Sorry, no evidence.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: The alerter needs to let DainBramage take his lumps. DB posted his puppies and baby picture to make a point and datasuspect replied with a verbal counterpoint. This is an easy leave and I recommend the alerter chill out.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: really? I think the poster is wrong about the dogs and the baby but it is their opinion. This isn't what the alert function is supposed to be used for.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

19. Really!

My first thought after the initial "Awwwww isn't that adorable!" was to think what a healthy immune system they are building for the child. (Children from homes with no pets are far more likely to develop allergies/asthma than those from homes with pets.)

105. Not in my case. I have a weak immune system.

Autoimmune diseases run in my mom's family.

I grew up in a filthy house. My mother was a hoarder and had her junk take up an entire bedroom. I was unable to have my own room because of this, and had to share a room with my sister. No central air, inadequate window units, horrible heat and humidity, and a very large collie dog (rough collie) and I had a runny nose my entire childhood.

Dog looked approximately like this--they were bred with Russian wolfhounds at the turn of the 20th century:

Nobody noticed except to yell at me to go blow my nose in the bathroom at school.

I still have allergic asthma and inhalant allergies like dog hair and cat hair. I also have some pretty serious food allergies--nightshade family(tomatoes), shellfish, bell peppers. Your hypothesis does not work in my case.

115. That's unfortunate.

However, it isn't my hypothesis. Got the thought from this researcher talking about his study on NPR yesterday.

"...we have a series of interesting anecdotes that would suggest that's true. And so one of those is that there's a study from Detroit that suggests that pregnant mothers who live in houses with a dog are less likely to show evidence in their umbilical cord blood of the kinds of antibodies we associate with allergies.

It's also been shown that young children growing up with dogs are less likely to develop wheezing and asthma. And so in both cases it's been suggested that maybe what's happening is that in those houses, those children and the fetus are being exposed to more kinds of bacteria that sort of prime their immune system and make their immune system function more normally...."

It's a very good segment. You might enjoy listening to it if you have time.

156. Autoimmune disease is not a sign of a weak

immune system, but of an over-active, misdirected one. Sounds to me like you had a fairly average childhood and now have some allergies. Also fairly common.

203. My daughter is in your shoes -

(Two life threatening autoimmune diseases) and has been doing a lot of (literature) research, and some of the same factors also seem to be at play with autoimmunity. It obviously doesn't work for everyone - but on average they are finding that our microbiomes have been way too skewed by hyperfastidiousness, and that we would be much better off with more pets and dirt.

But, like you, she grew up with pets and a less than fastidious house. She was also born by C-section and had antibiotics early on - two things which can contribute to a messed up microbiome.

2) Mama dog if she is around would die to protect that baby.

something bad doesn't actually have to happen when graphic portrayals of parental irresponsibility might be sufficient inspiration to make someone throw a bunch of dogs in a cradle.

167. There is more of a potential of something bad happening when you put a baby into your

car to go to the store. And we are never safe, never. People whose goal is to be totally safe live miserable lives and are not ever going to be able to achieve that goal anyhow. A baby can suffocate, and tragically many do every year, for no apparent reason at all, it's called crib death. My three month old niece was one of those tragedies. There were no puppies, no kittens, and her parents could not have been more experienced, they had three other children at the time, more concerned, more loving or more careful of her safety.

This world is filled with potential 'bad things' that can happen, yet most of us survive, some children survive the most awful childhoods, in war zones eg.

That is a beautiful photo and the baby is in no more potential danger than s/he would be taking a ride in a car. Maybe we should not put babies in cars because of the potential harm they could come to?

171. Yes, and every time you breathe...

One of these could get sucked down your windpipe;

And it could sting you, and your trachea could swell shut, and you could die!

...But the odds are so small that it's really not worth wasting your time worrying about it.

Same with this kid. You want to worry about him asphyxiating? Don't worry about him getting cuddled by three puppies for a photo. Worry about the gerber being sluiced into his face three times a day, daily.

This is probably a staged and supervised picture, but it's also dangerous and unwise. I wonder if anyone that has had a kid thinks this is "cute."

If this picture is not staged, then the baby sleeps in an unsafe place. The dogs can easily sleep on its head.

34. Correct...

...and I fail to see anything unsafe in the picture. If you knew who the photographer/parent was, what do you think the reaction from CPS would be upon their viewing of it?

If the 3 dogs were Irish Wolfhounds, you might have a point (in regards to smothering), but I just cannot imagine a scenario in which the three little bulldogs in the picture could harm the baby.

139. Five total that I could find

using variations of smothered, suffocated, infant, dog, puppy - from 1935, 1948, 1978, 1998, and 2010 (in the UK).

Three were in circumstances known to prevent their own risk of suffocation - or SIDS (face down under covers, on the back seat of a car, and on a sofa)
The bedding of the other two are unknown (a toddler in a camper - no description of the bedding, and a mother dog who miscarried and apparently saw the infant as a substitute pup - no information about bedding)

Three reported finding the dog with the child (the 1935, 1948, and 1998 ones), and no follow-up after autopsy was available.
Three reported the cause of death using words like "suspected" or "apparently," and the other two - 1935 and 1948 spoke with certainty - but also involved other suffocation risks (and were before much refined knowledge of SIDS.

1935 ( http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1893&dat=19350128&id=wwkfAAAAIBAJ&sjid=l9IEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5196,3481943 )
1948 ( http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1499&dat=19480601&id=SuFQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=vCMEAAAAIBAJ&pg=1440,323790 )
1978 ( http://www.news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1129&dat=19780427&id=DJ1RAAAAIBAJ&sjid=PG0DAAAAIBAJ&pg=2095,3960488 )
1998
2010

(I just remember battling my FIL about cats stealing infants' breath - and although a bit more plausible because of the weight involved - this seemed like more of the same mostly imagined risk, so I decided to explore it a bit.)

The kid is less likely to grow up with allergies and other immune systems troubles too.

In times past, and even recently when kids are lost in the forest, dogs have kept kids warm and safe.

Somehow we've accepted a mean culture. The people are meaner, and they breed mean dogs.

Our culture celebrates the bad ass people, the very wealthy, the fighters, the hyper-competitive assholes.

We call them strong, but their strength arises from fear.

A functional society discourages mean people and mean dogs, it does not celebrate them. Its people and dogs are strong and gentle because they are not afraid.

We didn't start the poutrage

Olive Garden, AppleBees, Cigarettes, breastfeeding, circumcision, narwhals, pit bulls, smoking bans

Elliot Spritzer, High school bands, soda pop, pornography, toilet paper dust, and Natalie Wood's untimely death

We didn't start the poutrage, if you don't recycle they'll drum you out of the neighborhood, we didn't start the poutrage, if you aren't concerned about the Patriot act you better be

food stamps, kids on planes, drinking caffeine, bombing the moon,

tax fast food, Rapture, PETA, Vaccinations, orange juice, and Jessie James

we didn't start the poutrage, and the penis size is once again on top of GD

Ipads, PayPal, Michael Vicks, and Octomom, unicorns Charlie Sheen, Jesus Christ we had good times

we didn't hate the Weiner, 2 Broke Girls are the new screaming kids in restaurants, we didn't include the spare tire....... and the Dugger mom is popping out another one......

we didn't start the poutrage, if you own a hot car you must be a total dick.........we didn't start the poutrage, ut we'll find something else to complain about next week....

we didn't start the poutrage, and babies should never ever sleep with their pets, we didn't start the poutrage, and the DU is really becoming quite a mess.

My cat misses him a lot. They played chase the cat up the cat tree or under the bed many times a day and even at night. And it was a real game, because in between they were just fine around each other.

Had pets all through my childhood; cats, dogs, fish, hampsters, guinea pigs, skunks, birds, goats, sheep, garter snakes.......and I came to no harm from the pets.

Adult humans, on the other hand, hurt me too many times to count.

had one dog that stationed itself beside the bassinet and if my newborn even squeaked would come running to get me. Another dog made sure the kids played a safe distance from the road even though we had a fence. He used to herd them to the backyard. Another alerted me to the fact that one of my son's was not breathing right and we found out he had pneumonia and could have died had the dog not woke me. I cannot understand all the negative comments about dogs and babies.

Laugh if you like, and maybe this particular instance is well supervised. The problem is these dogs are being encouraged to sleep with baby, and if no one is watching every minute, the next time may indeed result in a tragedy.

America's materialistic consumer society has been dog obsessed for about ten years now by my reckoning.

NONE of the people (including myself) at the shelter have new cars, and they have vans and suvs to carry the dogs to events to get them adopted. ALL of them (except myself) have multiple dogs because they LOVE dogs, it isn't a status symbol except for the Right Wing. Many foster two or more dogs because snotty ass people think they're a luxury. We as a society have been dog obsessed for hundreds of generations, not recently. My great great grandfather had a dog in his pictures, so you're sadly mistaken.

Until my last two dogs died, I had two dogs from 1974 until 2007. Don't fucking tell me it's wrong.

I have tried to save a stray here, a big dog abandoned by his family when they drove off and left him alone. He suffered through -30 weather all winter here alone without shelter hunting to survive. AND GUESS WHAT FUCKING HATERS!! He has lived within 300 feet of his house because he's waiting for the bastards that abandoned him TO COME BACK TO GET HIM! 9 months on his own in the worst winter I can remember and he's STILL KEEPING THE COVENANT!

That is why the average dog usually is a nicer soul than the average person. HUGS Dain.

By the way, the dog has disappeared. He has probably lain down somewhere and died. I hope so. He is NOBLE and deserves to go on to a good life in the next one. I hope some day to hug him.

But a dog might be a lot cheaper than all of the diseases that cutting edge research suggests is associated with messed up microbiomes - which they are also discovering can be healthier in pet owners.

Not to mention the emotional support pets typically provide their owners which, in a cousin's case, dramatically lowers the risks associated with seizures because when she is without her emotional support dog she has to take more medication to support her mental health - a side effect of which is increased seizures.

142. For Those who think dogs serve no purpose

http://www.ktul.com/story/17797188/tanner-blair?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=7053436

Putting two dogs of different breeds and from different backgrounds together in a confined space will usually end up in a lot of bark and likely some bite. Rarely does that pairing end up in the two pooches becoming an inseparable pair.

That latter, more unlikely scenario was just the case, however, with two young dogs in Oklahoma who not only built a friendship but also cured each other’s ills.

Blair is a 1-year-old black Labrador mix brought to the Woodland West Animal Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., after she was shot while living on the streets. After he recovered from his wounds, Blair remained at the clinic, a timid and nervous pup whose difficult history made her hard to place with an adopted family, the hospital’s director, Dr. Mike Jones, told ABCNews.com.

Then there was Tanner, a two-year-old Golden Retriever puppy who was born blind and with a seizure disorder so severe he was sent to Woodland Hospital as a last resort after his first owner died and the Oklahoma City-based Sooner Golden Retriever Rescue organization that had assumed his care, was unable to find a family to give him the around-the-clock care he needed.

“His seizure disorder was really, really bad and nothing — no medications — seemed to be helping,” Jones said. “Anytime he seizes he expresses his bowels. It’s a nightmare anytime you have a 90-lb dog experiencing this nightly; it made living in a home very, very difficult.”

Tanner and Blair lived with their respective conditions until the two were placed together a few months ago in a chance encounter, first reported by local ABC affiliate KTUL.

“One day they were exercising in a play yard together and they got together, Jones said. “Blair all of a sudden seemed to realize that Tanner was blind and just started to help him around.”

Recognizing the dogs’ immediate connection, hospital staff began to board Tanner and Blair together, and the results spoke for themselves.

Tanner had been seizing almost nightly, Jones said. ”After two or three weeks, we realized Tanner wasn’t seizing anymore. He’s not completely seizure free but it’s not constant anymore.”

“We’ve worked with a lot of different service dogs to provide these services for people,” said Jones. “But it’s the first time I’ve seen anything like this, the special relationship these two dogs have.”

170. Aww. So sweet. Cuddly puppy bellies and rosy baby cheeks and tender little ears. Frenchies?

I think they're French Bulldogs. They're sweet puppies. Nothing to worry about.

172. Absolutely wonderful

I'm blown away by all the ignorant fraidy cats whining about the terrible danger. POPPYCOCK.

197. This thread exposes the absolute insanity that is DU.

I open the thread to see a wonderful picture that instantly brings my morning a bit of joy.

BUT then---- I begin reading some comments from my fellow DU'ers and right out of the gate I'm told that this is horrible because those cute little puppy dogs could suffocate the cute little baby?

There goes my joyous moment.

Fact is--- comments on the internets are like assholes--- you know the rest.... no matter what the content---and I mean no mater what, someone will always, as proven by this thread---always lay a huge turd.

"Puppies suffocating Babies"?

I'm going back to bed.

212. My God, I grew up with dogs, and played outside until the street lights came on

I grew up with all kinds of mutts who I rolled around with, swim with, and even kissed on the nose.

I played war, built tree forts, rode my bike, skinned my knees, and got punched more than once.

I participated in snowball fights, wouldn't get out of the lake when Mom yelled at me, thought I was Batman, and ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on white bread.

And yet I have made it to over 60. Imagine that.

I think a baby whose dogs love her will probably be OK.

199. That's great, and perfectly safe, because no dog has ever bitten a baby.

Especially dogs as cute as that.

Is the benefit worth the risk?

225. There actually is

a lot of controversy among photographers about poses like those (the sleeping infants - typically just a few weeks old, since beyond that point they don't sleep on command and awaken too easily to pose.)

I'm a member of a professional photography group - and the discussion about that kind of photographs can get as wild as...say...discussions about breastfeeding at the Olive Garden.

(As an aside, from those discussions I can tell you that there are often adults hidden behind strategically placed props keeping baby in place.)

take a walk, you're late to the party, we know better than you do.

216. Oh good grief.

Children and dogs have grown up together for tens of thousands of years, and we have somehow muddled through together.

Welcome to DU. I think.

230. That the baby's flesh is allowed to co-mingle with the flesh of lesser beings,

mongrels, is (sputter sputter) beyond the pale! Beyond the pale I tell you!
