Apple now worth more than Google and Microsoft combined (almost 1/2 trillion dollars)

Apple now worth more than Google and Microsoft combined

By Neil Hughes

First on AI: Apple's stock soared to new heights on Thursday, pushing the company's market capitalization to $456 billion, a number that is greater than the values of rivals Google and Microsoft combined.

As of Thursday morning, Microsoft's market cap was around $256.7 billion, while Google was valued at around $198.9 billion. With Apple's stock up more than 3 percent in morning trading, the company surpassed the combined totals of both Google and Microsoft.

The milestone comes soon after Apple reported its best quarter ever, earning $13.06 billion on sales of 37 million iPhones, 15 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs. Total revenue for Apple's holiday quarter was $46.33 billion.

But Google's shares fell more than 9 percent last month after the company missed expectations on Wall Street for both earnings and revenue. And while Microsoft met Wall Street expectations, revenue from its Windows operating system fell 6 percent to $4.74 billion.

39. One theory is that they're not sufficiently diversified.

They have only a few product lines that are immensely popular, and investors think that the bubble will burst eventually.

It will.

19. Don't know where you are getting that idea from.

When you back out Apple's cash (100 billion) it has a forward P/E of about 10. Average stock P/E is 14-15. I expect Apple to take out 650 by the end of the year.

3. It's no wonder - I was just looking at prices for various iPads, iPhones, etc. - outrageous!

They have an authoritarian price-control system, and somehow they've convinced people it's worth paying double for Apple electronics.

6. I'll never buy a Mac laptop again

Especially when I paid literally 1/2 the $1700 cost for my Toshiba - which has way better hardware including a dedicated GPU and blu-ray capabilities.

You need to come up with a new schtick.

4. Apple's iPhone business alone is worth all of Microsoft. Steve Ballmer laughed at the iPhone...

...when it was announced.

Bill Gates' college roommate should have never been made CEO.

Gates should return, fire Ballmer, and save Microsoft.

It's weird having these discussions after so many years, but someday everyone will realize that it isn't worth getting all hot and bothered about.

5. Yay! More lifestyle gadgets for smug bourgeoisie!

I guess this sort of profitability is what happens when you price your products at the upper end of each's market niche, encourage a cultish level of customer loyalty...then relentlessly cut production costs with quasi-slave-labor and other dubious practices.

Fuck Apple.

16. You don't get "cultish customer loyalty" by "encouraging" it.

You get "cultish customer loyalty" by making a good product.

And if they didn't, it's okay cause "everybody does it."

Darn Josh, I guess even DU regulars can have their moral blind spots.
